BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University junior runningback Norman Shuford (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) "Offensive Player of the Week" after tallying 285 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in GVSU's 61-31 over Lake Erie College last Saturday. Ashland University redshirt-freshman defensive back Eric Schwieterman (Norwalk, Ohio/St. Paul) earned "Defensive Player of the Week Honors," while Ashland's senior kicker Gregg Berkshire (Ashland, Ohio) was tabbed "Special Teams Player of the Week."
Ashland - Ashland scored 17 fourth-quarter points
last Saturday to knock off sixth-ranked Wayne State, 20-17. The
last time the Eagles defeated a team ranked higher than WSU was in
the opening game of the 1997 season when Ashland upset
fourth-ranked Ferris State, 26-7 in Big Rapids,
Mich…Saturday’s crowd of 4,528 was the second largest
in the three-year history of Jack Miller Stadium…AU won last
Saturday’s game on the final play of regulation when senior
Gregg Berkshire connected on a 43-yard field goal attempt. That was
the first game-winning field goal of Berkshire’s career.
Berkshire has 13 field goals this season. He shares the school
record for single season field goals (16). Berkshire is the
only player in school history to twice kick 16 field goals in a
season…redshirt freshman defensive back Eric Schwieterman
(Norwalk, Ohio/St. Paul) had two interceptions Saturday and leads
the Eagles with four picks. Schwieterman also had six tackles
against the Warriors…AU carries a season-high four game
winning streak into Thursday night’s game at Saginaw Valley
State.
Ferris State - The Ferris State University
football team provided its fans and alumni with plenty to cheer
about on Saturday (Oct. 15) as the Bulldogs recorded a decisive
35-6 homecoming win over Northern Michigan at FSU’s Top
Taggart Field... The win was the Bulldogs’ fourth victory in
their last five outings this season and came before a crowd of
3,241 on a windy day in Big Rapids... A week after giving up 43
points in an eight-point loss at Findlay, the Bulldogs responded by
limiting the Wildcats to 222 yards of total offense and no
touchdowns in earning the win... The Bulldogs’ balanced
attack ran for 242 yards while senior quarterback Tom Schneider was
22-of-30 in the air for 202 yards and a score. Schneider paced FSU
on the ground with 77 yards and a TD on 13 carries... Defensively,
the Bulldogs received a game-high 12 stops from junior linebacker
Tayo Moss. Sophomore defensive end Cody Groulx added 10
tackles while junior cornerback Antwian Windmon recorded nine stops
and also had an interception.
Findlay - The Oilers defeated Ohio Dominican
University on Homecoming by a score of 27-24 at Donnell
Stadium. Junior running back Monterae Williams led the
offense with 111 yards on 27 carries to go along with a touchdown
while junior quarterback Clay Belton completed 12-of-20 passes for
140 yards and a score. Williams has now gone over the
100-yard mark six games on the year. On the season, Williams
has rushed for 922 yards to go along with 13 touchdowns.
Sophomore tight end Jaryd Brown caught five passes for 58 yards and
a score while sophomore wide receiver Seth White registered three
catches for 59 yards. Defensively, senior defensive back
Donte Johnson registered a career-high 14 tackles. Senior
defensive back Isaiah Ballard made ten stops in the win and also
forced and recovered a pair of fumbles in the fourth quarter that
ended drives by the Panthers and ultimately led to the Oilers
win. He leads the nation with six forced fumbles and is tied
for the national lead with four fumble recoveries.
Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State is
averaging 220.4 yards per game rushing and 233.0 yards per game
passing this season…After recording just one interception
the first five games of the season, GVSU has picked off six passes
the last two games…The GVSU defense has recorded 63 tackles
for loss (-254) and 21 QB sacks (-119) in 2011…Sophomore
safety Erik Thompson has three returns for Tds in the last two
games. Thompson returned an interception 95 yards for a TD at NMU,
followed by a kickoff return (100 yards) and interception return
(49 yards) for scores at Lake Erie.
Hillsdale - The Chargers won at Michigan Tech for
the first time since Nov. 2, 1996, 13-7 over the Huskies…It
was the lowest-scoring game played by the Chargers since a 10-7 win
over Findlay on Nov. 4, 2006…All seven of the team’s
games this season have been decided by nine points or
less…Hillsdale is now 15-1 in its last 16 games following a
loss, a streak that dates back to September 2006…The
team’s defense came into the game allowing an average of 371
yards per game, but set a new season-low in that category, by far,
by allowing MTU just 167 yards of total offense... Sophomore LB
Brett Pasche set a new career-high with four tackles-for-loss in
the game…Senior Nick Hixson had a reception and an
interception in the same game for the first time in his
career…Junior RB Joe Glendening rushed for 108 yards,
crossing the 1,000 yard barrier during the team’s seventh
game of the season…His 19 rushing touchdowns put him in sole
possession of third place on Hillsdale’s single-season
rushing touchdown record list.
Indianapolis - UIndy (5-2, 4-2 GLIAC) earned its
first three-game winning streak in two years with a 29-20 win
versus division-leading Saginaw Valley last week…The final
also marked the Greyhounds’ first home win versus Saginaw
Valley since 1988…The UIndy defense notched its second
straight three-interception game and has forced seven turnovers the
previous two Saturdays combined …Freshman safety Koby Orris
(Fishers, Ind.) garnered two fourth-quarter INTs in his first
collegiate start, capping one with a 45-yard return for a
touchdown…Senior cornerback Collin Coffer (Indianapolis,
Ind.) also added a touchdown after taking his second interception
of the season 36 yards the other way to the end zone…The
Hounds committed their first turnover of the season Saturday when
sophomore QB Chris Mills (Lafayette, Ind.) was intercepted in the
third quarter. UIndy came into the game as the only NCAA team
(all divisions) without a turnover in 2011.
Lake Erie - The
Storm rolled up a season-high 482 yards Saturday night against
Grand Valley... senior QB Sean Bedevelsky completed 22-of-38 passes
for 280 yards and two touchdowns - all season highs. He did
throw two interceptions, ending his streak of consecutive passes
without one at 151... fifth-year senior WB David Romeo totaled 122
all-purpose yards. He scored on a 72-yard run and a seven-yard
pass. He led the team with 79 rushing yards on four carries and had
three catches for 43 yards. His 72-yard run was the second
longest run from scrimmage in school history and made the game
33-31 late in the third... on defense, senior safety Steve
Bensinger had a season-high nine tackles and intercepted a pass.
The interception was his third of the season and fourth of his
career - both school records.
Michigan Tech - Michigan Tech continues to own
the GLIAC’s top defense in terms of points allowed and yards
allowed. The Huskies held Hillsdale to 13 points and 294
yards—well below its season averages of 34 points and 464
yards per game … Senior defensive ends Drew Vanderlin (Green
Bay, Wis./Southwest) and Todd Storm (Calumet, Mich.) each added a
sack to their season and career totals. Vanderlin has 4.5 sacks on
the year and 18.0 for his career—second most all-time behind
Tony Roberson’s (1999-2002) 21.0. Storm owns 5.0 on the
season and 16.0 for his career—third most in school annals
… Senior Jesse Vandenberg (Kaukauna, Wis.) leads the team
with 53 tackles this season. The strong safety has accumulated 272
career tackles—seventh most in school history. He can move
into the top five all-time with 24 more.
Northern Michigan - NMU lost its fourth game in a
row…Ferris State defeated the Wildcats 35-6 at Top Taggart
Field…The ‘Cats points came off two field goals by
Rockne Belmonte…He made field goals of 45 and 25 yards in
the second quarter… Prince Young rushed for a team
season-high of 149 yards…NMU scored made a field goal its
lone time in the redzone…The ‘Cats were 4-for-15 on
third-down conversion…NMU has won only one of the last 10
games at Ferris State…NMU had a season-low 222 yards of
offense… The ‘Cats look to break their losing streak
at Indianapolis next Saturday.
Northwood - Northwood earned a 20-10 win at
Tiffin Saturday afternoon (October 15) ... NU used a strong
rushing attack to earn the win, posting a season-high 335 yards ...
Northwood had 63 rushing attempts and just five pass attempts in
the game ...Sophomore running back Cameron Jackson (Dahlonega,
Ga./Lumpkin) had a career-high 213 yards rushing and a pair
of touchdowns in the game ... Jackson’s one-yard
touchdown in the second quarter gave Northwood the lead, while his
30-yard score in the fourth quarter clinched the win for the
Timberwolves ... for the season, Jackson leads Northwood with 599
yards rushing and five touchdowns ... Ryan Whittum (Livonia,
Mich./Churchill) led the Timberwolves’ defense in the game
with eight tackles ... he leads Northwood with 57 tackles on the
season, 24 more than anyone else on team.
Ohio Dominican - Despite outgaining Findlay
451-309, Ohio Dominican turned the ball over three times and fell
27-24 on the road…Two of ODU’s turnovers happened
inside the red zone, and the third came on the Panthers’
final drive…The 451 offensive yards was a season-high, as
was the team’s 27 first downs…The Panthers ran for 299
yards, the second-best figure in school history, as Mike Noffsinger
(136), Jeremy Fudge (113) and Ronnel Spates (50) contributed to the
rushing attack…Noffsinger tied Nathan Clark’s mark of
21 career rushing TDs in school history…The defense held the
GLIAC’s best rushing offense to 3.9 yards per carry and 80
yards below its season average.
Saginaw Valley State - SVSU fell in a
heartbreaker to Indianapolis by a score of 29-20 to fall to 4-2
overall on the season and in the GLIAC. SVSU would find
themselves down by a score of 16-3, but would score 17 straight
points to take a 20-16 advantage before the Greyhounds would steal
the SVSU momentum on a 45-yard INT return for a touchdown just
seconds after taking a 22-20 lead in the fourth quarter. The
Cardinal offense would rack up 457 yards of total offense, but
would turn the ball over three time on the evening. Two of
the turnovers were returned for UIndy TD’s. The Saginaw
Valley offense would once again show its big play ability, scoring
two touchdowns on passes of longer than 30-yards against the
Greyhounds. SVSU has now scored nine touchdowns on passes of
30-yards or more after Jonathon Jennings connected with Nick
Gallina for a 79-yard score and Jeff Janis for a 49-yard
strike. The Cardinal defense ended Indianapolis’ streak
that dated back to week 6 of 2010 of not committing a turnover.
Tiffin - Northwood picked up the narrow
20-10 victory, negating the best defensive showing of the season by
the Dragons…Marcus Beaurem hauled in a 37 yard TD pass from
Dan Pitts to keep the Dragons close…Tiffin’s defense
made big plays, as Carlton Watkins intercepted a pass to kill one
Northwood drive, and Michael Gomez stuffed a fourth-down attempt by
NU to end another threat…Pitts was sacked 5 times in the
game to go along with 3 interceptions. He did connect on 22 of 34
passes for 223 yards and a TD… Beaurem was the prime
recipient of Pitts’ passing, hauling in 10 catches for 84
yards…Defensively the Dragons put up their best numbers of
the season, with Collard totaling 14 tackles with a tackle for
loss, a forced fumble and a recovery.
Wayne State - Wayne State had its
school-record 10-game winning streak snapped at Ashland as the
Warriors allowed 17 fourth quarter points ... WSU had surrendered a
total of 14 fourth quarter points in the first six games combined
... senior Josh Renel (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) had
a game-high and personal season-best 179 all-purpose yards on a
game-best 93 rushing yards and two punt returns for 86 yards, which
led directly to 10 Wayne State points ... Renel surpassed the
2,000-yard rushing plateau and moved into eighth place on the WSU
all-time chart with 2,050 rushing yards ... Renel also moved past
Thabiti Williamson (1999-2002) into fourth place on the all-time
all-purpose yards list with 4,124 yards ... junior quarterback
Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio/Harvey) became WSU’s
all-time leader in passing touchdowns with his first quarter
scoring toss (Mohner’s 39th) to senior tight end Cory Zauner
(Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern).
