BAY CITY, Mich. - Hillsdale College junior runningback Joe Glendening (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) earned his second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) "Offensive Player of the Week" award this season after rushing for 241 yards and four touchdowns in Hilllsdale's 49-19 win at the University of Findlay. Michigan Technological University junior linebacker Justin Armstrong (Las Vegas, Nev./Mojave) earned "Defensive Player of the Week Honors," while Ohio Dominican University senior place kicker/punter Chris Vortkamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) was tabbed "Special Teams Player of the Week."
Ashland - AU was ranked sixth in the regional
rankings last week…Saturday’s loss to Ohio Dominican
ended an eight-game home winning streak…junior wide receiver
Anthony Capasso (Columbia Station, Ohio/St. Edward) caught seven
passes for 101 yards against ODU. Both of those figures are career
highs for Capasso. The junior caught a touchdown pass for the third
consecutive game…sophomore linebacker Cody Bloom (Napoleon,
Ohio) had 11 tackles last Saturday and has 97 for the season. Bloom
has a chance to become the first AU player with 100 tackles since
linebacker-safety Tom Brenner in 2008…senior defensive
lineman Matt Stoinoff (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) had 1.5 tackles
for loss Saturday and that moved him into a tie for fourth place in
career TFL at AU. Stoinoff has 28 tackles for loss in his
career…senior kicker Gregg Berkshire (Ashland, Ohio) has 16
field goals this season. He is the only player in school history to
reach the number three times.
Ferris State - Michigan Tech University kept its
series’ win streak alive against the Ferris State University
football team on Saturday (Nov. 5) afternoon as the Huskies pulled
out a 41-14 victory over the Bulldogs at Sherman Field... Senior
quarterback Tom Schneider paced FSU by completing 17-of-31 passes
for 233 yards, but was sacked three times. Five of his
completions went to senior receiver Mike Ryan for 136 yards with
junior tailback Dwayne Williams catching four passes for 28
yards. Redshirt freshman Jamaal Jackson led FSU on the ground
with five carries for 19 yards. Williams had both of the
Bulldogs’ TD’s on the afternoon... Junior linebacker
Tayo Moss paced FSU defensively with 16 total tackles, including 11
solo stops and also blocked a kick. Junior linebacker Alex
Brajak chipped in with 10 tackles.
Findlay - The Oilers fell 49-19 on Saturday to
Hillsdale at Donnell Stadium. The Chargers racked up 587
yards of total offense and averaged 7.4 yards per play during the
win. Hillsdale’s Joe Glendening recorded 241 yards
rushing and four touchdowns while Anthony Mifsud completed 24-of-30
passing attempts for 249 yards and three scores. Junior
quarterback Clay Belton completed 23-of-38 passes for 242 yards and
two touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Seth White caught
seven passes for 50 yards, sophomore tight end Jaryd Brown made six
receptions for 60 yards and a score while freshman wide receiver
Nathan Morris had three catches for 75 yards and a score.
Defensively, senior defensive back Isaiah Ballard led the team with
12 tackles and also registered 132 kickoff return yards.
Grand Valley State - QB Heath Parling has a
220.65 pass efficiency rating the last six games. During that
5-game stretch he has 24 TD passes and just one
interception...Parling’s 33 TD passes this season ranks fifth
all-time in a single-season behind Curt Anes (48 an 47), Cullen
Finnerty (41) and Brad Iciek (35)...and WR Charles Johnson has 51
receptions for 977 yards and 14 TDs. His 14 TD receptions is fourth
on the single-season list behind David Kircus(35 and 28) and Eric
Fowler (22).
Hillsdale - The Hillsdale College football team
put together its most complete performance of the season in its
49-19 win at Findlay Saturday afternoon…This was the first
game of the season that was decided by more than nine points, and
the second in 10 total games that wasn’t decided on the final
possession…The team’s 49 points and 587 yards of total
offense were both season highs…Junior RB Joe Glendening
returned after missing a game with injury by rushing for 241 yards
and 4 TDs…He set Hillsdale’s single-season record for
total touchdowns in a season with 27…He has 23 rushing TDs
and four receiving TDs…He is one rushing touchdown away from
tying the school record of 24 rushing touchdowns in a season, held
by Nate Clark and set back in 1955…Joe Vear’s 17-yard
interception return represented the first interception return yards
gained by a Charger defensive player this season.
Indianapolis - UIndy’s five-game winning
streak was snapped by a 28-19 loss to 24th-ranked Wayne
State…The loss was the first at home for the Greyhounds this
season…Two Greyhounds increased their single-season school
records versus WSU, as junior wide out Mar’Quone Edmonds
caught his 14th receiving touchdown of the season, while sophomore
QB Chris Mills up his passing TD total to 27. In addition,
senior Ryan Forney became just the fourth-ever Greyhound to reach
1,000 yards receiving in a season…Mills needs 275 passing
yards to crack 3,000 for the season.
Lake Erie - The
Storm snapped an eight game losing streak overall and a nine-game
GLIAC slide with a 52-42 win at Tiffin on Saturday. Freshman
RB Rod Smith ran for a career-high 172 yards on 21 carries and
rushed for three touchdowns, setting a school single-game record.
He had 118 yards in the first half alone... Senior QB Sean
Bedevelsky ran for two touchdowns and threw for two as well.
It was the third time in his career he had two touchdowns rushing
and passing in the same game and the 15th time he had at least one
of each in the same contest... senior WR Brandon James caught seven
passes for 95 yards. He now has 66 receptions and 765 yards
receiving this season, most in a single season in LEC history...
senior LB Gus Armbruster had a season-high 14 tackles to lead the
LEC defense, including 10 solo stops... senior OLB Kevin Chapman
had eight tackles, with 1.5 sacks.
Michigan Tech - QB Tyler Scarlett (Clarkston, Mich.) completed 21-of-27 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns in Tech’s 41-14 victory over Ferris State last Saturday (Nov. 5). The freshman eclipsed the school record season passing yards in the game, moving ahead of Steve Short’s (2006-10) 2,194 on a nine-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter. Scarlett now owns 2,214 passing yards in 2011 … Junior tailback Akeem Cason (Benton Harbor, Mich.) turned in his second 100-yard rushing game of the season with 117 yards on 17 carries (6.9 average) vs. Ferris State. Cason scored two TDs in the game including a 45-yard sprint in the third quarter … Senior Drew Vanderlin (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) tallied one sack against Ferris State to run his career total to 20.0. The senior is just 1.5 sacks shy of the school record of 21.5 (Tony Roberson, 1999-2002) … Tech’s 16 seniors played their final home games last Saturday. The group has compiled a 24-17 record over the last four years … The Huskies have won nine straight games in the series vs. Ferris State.
Northern Michigan - NMU wrapped up its road
portion of the 2011 schedule with a 42-38 loss at Saginaw Valley
State…NMU is now 4-6 overall and 3-6 in the GLIAC…NMU
finished 1-4 on the road with the lone victory at
Findlay…Junior kicker Rockne Belmonte made all four of his
field goal tries…He is 14-of-17 on the season with a long of
45 yards…Junior Jared Buss had a touchdown
reception…Senior Carter Kopach had a touchdown
run…Junior Prince Young had his fourth 100-yard rushing game
of the season with 124 yards on 36 carries…NMU wraps up the
season on Saturday (Nov. 11), hosting Michigan Tech for the Miners
Cup.
Northwood - Northwood fell to 2-8 on the season
with a 35-10 loss to Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon
(November 5) … NU is now 1-8 in GLIAC play … the
Timberwolves finished the day with 215 yards rushing … NU
held the ball for 24:01 of the second half, compared to 5:59 for
Grand Valley State … Northwood was led by Cameron Jackson
(Dahlonega, Ga./Lumpkin) … he had 97 yards and a touchdown
for the Timberwolves … true freshman running back Rashad
Hedgepeth (Rocky Mount, N.C./Northern Nash) had a career-high 82
yards on the ground.
Ohio Dominican - ODU handed Ashland its first home loss of the season with a 20-17 road win Saturday…ODU finished with a 3-2 record on the road this season after winning just once away from home in 2010…The Panthers, at 6-4 (5-4 GLIAC), are assured of their fifth winning season in just the eighth year of the program…ODU held Ashland to 75 yards rushing, 124 below season average and 60 less than previous season low…The Panthers controlled action in the second half, converting 8-of-10 third downs, running 42 plays to Ashland’s 23, and maintaining possession of the ball for 12:08 in the fourth quarter, including the final 6:03…Jeremy Fudge had a career-high 25 completions and went 15-of-17 in the second half…Tyler Purcell had a career-high 12 receptions and Mike Noffsinger broke his own school single-game record with 31 rushing attempts…Chris Vortkamp had a school-record long 47-yard field goal and drilled a 33-yard attempt in the fourth that proved to be the game-winner.
Saginaw Valley State - SVSU picked up its third straight win, this time knocking off Northern Michigan by a score of 48-23. The victory moves the Cardinals record to 7 -2 overall on the season and into a three way tie for first place in the GLIAC, setting up an important game to close out the season at Grand Valley... The offense amassed 448 yards of total offense and putting up 34 points. Sophomore QB Jonathon Jennings threw for 274 yards on 18-of-24 passing with three TDs to extend his streak to nine straight games this season with at least two touchdowns... Sophomore WR Jeff Janis notched his third game his season with at least two touchdown catches... The Cardinal defense intercepted two first half passes and returned them for touchdowns. The first was an 18-yard return by Noah Sumpter and the second was a 47-yard return by LB Brian Johnson... The Cardinals set a single season attendance record for Wickes Stadium, welcoming in 32,864 fans this season in just five games, best the previous mark of 27,730 that was set in a six game home schedule in 2003.
Tiffin - QB James Capello returned after missing nearly a month with a rib injury, and he came back in a big way, connecting on a GLIAC and TU record 46 completions on 55 attempts for 383 yards, the fifth-highest total in school history. He also tied a school record with 5 touchdown throws, and had just one interception. Overall Capello accounted for 432 yards rushing and passing… The main recipient of Capello’s passing was Obadiah Dykes, who broke the GLIAC record and a TU record with 18 receptions totaling 118 yards, including a 1-yard score. Bertram Marks also had a bid day with 110 yards receiving on 6 catches, while James Hall had 63 yards receiving and Marcus Beaurem had 53 yards…Marcus Beaurem had 124 all-purpose yards with 71 yards in kick returns on top of his 53 receiving yards, while Nate Scully also had 87 yards in kick returns. Overall Capello accounted for 432 yards rushing and passing…Mike Virgin was the leading tackler with 11 including 7 solo stops, 2 deflections, and a tackle for loss.
Wayne State - WSU can clinch at least a share of
its first GLIAC title since 1975 with a win at home this Saturday
against Findlay ... the Warriors are 17-4 in their last 21 contests
including a 9-2 mark at Adams Field ... senior RB Josh Renel
(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) needs six rushing yards
for his second consecutive 1,000-yard season, which will mark the
seventh straight year a Warrior has gained a 1,000-yards (Chris
Middlebrooks - 2005, Joique Bell - 2006-07-08-09, Renel-2010) ...
sophomore RB Toney Davis (Muskegon Hts., Mich./Muskegon) is seventh
in the GLIAC with 819 rushing yards ... senior safety Jeremy Jones
(Grand Rapids, Mich./Rockford) regained the GLIAC lead in
interceptions with his sixth of the campaign ... Jones has 14
career picks, which ranks eighth in school history ... senior wide
receiver Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) became just the third WSU
player in school history with a 1,000-yard receiving campaign ...
Burrell caught seven passes for a team-high 120 yards at UIndy and
is tied with Greyhound Ryan Forney for the conference lead in
receiving yards at 1,119.
