BAY CITY, Mich. - The University of Findlay senior wide receiver Seth White (Bexley, Ohio/Ball State University) was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) "Offensive Player of the Week" after leading the Oilers to a 43-42 overtime win at #22 Wayne State University. Grand Valley State University senior defensive back Zach Breen (Rockford, Mich.) earned "Defensive Player of the Week Honors," while Grand Valley State senior defensive back Erik Thompson (Pontiac, Mich./L’Anse Creuse North) was tabbed "Special Teams Player of the Week."
Ashland - Junior WR Anthony Capasso (Columbia
Station, Ohio/St. Edward) reached his single-game highs for catches
(13) and receiving yards (205) in AU’s loss at Lake
Erie. Capasso fell one reception short of the school
single-game mark for receptions – 14 by Michael Hull vs.
Findlay in 2002. Over the last three games of the season,
Capasso caught 30 passes. He had three TD receptions at Lake
Erie…junior QB Taylor Housewright (Ashland, Ohio) threw for
a career-high 330 yards at LEC. In two career starts against the
Storm, Housewright has thrown eight TD passes…sophomore LB
Cody Bloom (Napoleon, Ohio) had a team-high 12 tackles (eight solo)
at LEC and ended the year with 109 tackles. Bloom is the first AU
player with 100 tackles since linebacker-safety Tom Brenner in
2008…tailback Jordan McCune (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork)
finished the year with 834 yards rushing. That’s the highest
total by a freshman at Ashland since 1997 when Matt Otero rushed
for 1,030 yards.
Ferris State - The Ferris State University
football team wrapped up its 2011 campaign on a winning note as the
Bulldogs beat Northwood by a 30-14 count in their season finale on
Saturday (Nov. 12) at FSU’s Top Taggart Field... The Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win lifted the
Bulldogs to their first winning season since 2008 as FSU concluded
the season with a 6-5 overall record and a 5-5 conference mark. The
Bulldogs snapped a three-game losing skid by beating the
Timberwolves... The FSU victory came on Senior Day as nine seniors
wrapped up their collegiate careers in the win, including wide
receivers Damien Miller, Mike Ryan and William Frazier along with
quarterback Tom Schneider, punter Shawn Snoor, offensive lineman
Jake Hancock, defensive tackle Muneer Bawayeh and defensive backs
Antwian Windmon and Courtney Tipton... Ferris State finished with
346 yards of total offense, including 221 on the ground and 125 in
the air. Schneider completed 11-of-22 throws in his final
collegiate contest and also led FSU with 70 yards rushing on 13
carries. Ryan was the Bulldogs’ leading receiver with
four catches for 73 yards... The Bulldogs also put up some big
numbers defensively as junior linebacker Alex Brajak made a
game-high 18 tackles. Defensive lineman Rance Mask added a
career-best 15 stops with junior defensive end Jordan Morgan making
15 as well to go with a 22-yard interception return for a score, a
sack and two quarterback hurries... In addition to finishing the
2011 campaign with a winning record, the victory also allowed FSU
to finish with a 5-1 mark in home contests this season at Top
Taggart Field.
Findlay - The Oilers came up with a 43-42 win in
overtime at #22 Wayne State on Saturday to end the year with a 6-5
record... The Warriors scored in the first overtime period, but
Findlay answered with a score of their own and converted the
two-point attempt to win the game... Junior quarterback Clay
Belton finished the game by completing a season-high 27-of-40
passing attempts for 280 yards and three touchdowns. He also
rushed for 35 yards on six carries during the win...
Sophomore wide receiver Seth White hauled in a career-high 11
receptions for 111 yards and a two scores while sophomore tight end
Jaryd Brown set a new career-high with nine catches for 145 yards
and a score. White also threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to
Brown, connected on five point-after-attempts and averaged 34.0
yards per punt...Red-shirt freshman wide receiver Nathan Morris
registered three receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown while
junior running back Monterae Williams finished the game with 28
carries for 96 yards and two scores. Defensively, three
Oilers had double digit tackle numbers as sophomore linebacker
Kenny Klatt (11), red-shirt freshman linebacker Torrence Garland
(10) and junior linebacker Brandon Bulter (10) led the team on the
day. Belton’s 2,032 passing yards on the season is the
third best total in school history. He also set a new school
record with 315 passing attempts and had the second highest
completion total with 175. Williams scored 19 touchdowns on
the year, the third best mark in school history while White’s
60 receptions is the third best mark as well.
Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State finished
the season with a seven-game winning streak, the fifth longest
winning streak in DII to close the season…Heath Parling
finished the regular season leading the nation in pass efficiency
rating (180.35). Parling tossed 34 TD passes, the fifth-best,
single-season total in Laker history...Junior WR Charles Johnson
hauled in 56 passes for 1,030 yards and 15 TDs. Johnson’s
1,030 yards is fifth on the single-season list, while his 15 TD
receptions is fourth..SS Erik Thompson tallied two kickoff returns
for TDs that covered 100 yards each and he picked off a team-high 5
five pass and had 225 return yards...Senior DT Andre Thompas capped
his senior year by leading the GLIACin QB sacks with eight (-36)
and tackles for loss with 15 (-60)...Senior LB Brad Howard led the
Lakers with 79 total tackles, while also recorded 12 tackles for
loss (-27).
Hillsdale - The Hillsdale College football team
clinched the outright 2011 GLIAC championship thanks to its 42-0
win over Tiffin University Saturday afternoon in Ohio…It is
the program’s first conference title since 1992 and first
outright championship since 1988…No players on the current
roster were alive the last time Hillsdale won an outright league
title…The team entered play Saturday tied with several teams
for first place, but thanks to losses by Wayne State, Indianapolis
and Saginaw Valley State, the Chargers ascended to the top spot all
by themselves…It was the Chargers’ first shutout
since Sept. 19, 2009, when it defeated Michigan Tech at home
37-0…Junior RB Joe Glendening set three single-season school
records in the victory…He now holds records for the most
carries (325), yards (1,604) and rushing touchdowns (27) in a
single season in school history…The rushing TDs record had
been the oldest in any sport at Hillsdale, and had stood since
1955, when Nate Clark ran for 24
touchdowns…Redshirt-freshman Alex Koski ran for his first
career touchdown, a 33-yard run, in the fourth quarter…The
Charger defense forced a season-high four turnovers, and held the
Dragons to -14 yards rushing, the first time they’ve held a
team to less than zero yards on the ground since October
1999…This is the third year in a row Hillsdale has finished
out the regular season on a three-game winning streak.
Indianapolis - UIndy committed a season-high
three turnovers in last week’s 38-26 loss at Ohio Dominican,
as two interceptions and a fumble led to 21 points for the
Panthers…Despite the multiple giveaways, the Greyhounds set
a new NCAA Division II mark for fewest turnovers in a season
(6)…Senior Joe Leach had his first career three-touchdown
game at ODU with two TD catches and a 94-yard kickoff return.
The latter marked the longest kickoff return for a score by a
Greyhound in recorded history (since 1983) and the first since
2007…Middle linebacker Max Davis and d-lineman Justin
Robinson each compiled season highs in tackles with 16 and 11
stops, respectively…Senior Ryan Forney finished 2011 as the
program’s single-season record holder in all-purpose yards
(1,713), while junior Mar’Quone Edmonds’ 14 receiving
touchdowns also broke the school mark. In addition, sophomore
Chris Mills set new school records with 243 completions, completion
percentage (63.8) and 29 passing TDs.
Lake Erie - The
Storm rolled up a season-high 502 yards in a 45-42 victory over
Ashland at home Saturday on Senior Day. It was the second
straight victory to end the season for Lake Erie, which scored 97
points in the final two weeks... senior QB Sean Bedevelsky ran for
99 yards and tied a school record with three rushing touchdowns and
completed 17-of-23 passes for 262 yards and two TDs. It was
the third straight game he had at least two rushing and passing
touchdowns and the 16th time overall he had at least one of each in
a game (four straight). Bedevelsky finished the year with 12
rushing touchdowns, a school record... fifth-year WR Brandon James
caught six passes for 114 yards, including a spectacular 33-yard
touchdown catch and run. That gave him 72 receptions and 879
yards on the season, both career and LEC single-season highs...
classmate David Romeo caught his 30th pass of the season, marking
the fourth straight year the Storm had at least two players with 30
or receptions. Romeo also added a 27-yard touchdown run and
went over the 3,000-yard mark for all-purpose yardage in his
career... seniors Kevin Chapman and Gus Armbruster each had nine
tackles. Chapman had 1.5 sacks while Armbruster had a sack
and forced a fumble. Freshmen linebackers Marcus Rogers and
Kyle Herth had nine and eight tackles, respectively... junior
kicker Sam Marcotte punted on Lake Erie’s final play, his
first punt since the third quarter of week nine against Ohio
Dominican. Marcotte was 1-of-2 on field goals against
Ashland, converting from 22 yards and just missing on a 59-yarded
right before halftime. The ball had the distance but missed
to the left of the uprights by about a foot... Lake Erie won its
home finale for the third straight year and for the first time in
its four-year varsity history, won its regular season finale... the
Storm recognized its 27 senior players prior to the game.
Michigan Tech - Michigan Tech retained possession
of the Miner’s Cup with a 21-18 victory at Northern Michigan
last Saturday (Nov. 12). The Huskies have won seven of the 10
Miner’s Cup games and eight of the last 11 in the series
… Head coach Tom Kearly has completed his sixth season as
Tech’s head coach with a 37-26 record (.587 winning
percentage) … Freshman quarterback Tyler Scarlett
(Clarkston, Mich.) extended his school record for season passing
yards with 192 at NMU. The rookie’s final total for 2011 is
2,406. Scarlett also completed 66.1 percent of his throws to break
Steve Short’s 2008 record of 64.3 percent … Senior
defensive end Drew Vanderlin (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) did not
have a sack in his final game, finishing his career with 20.0
sacks—1.5 shy of the school record of 21.5 … Defensive
end Todd Storm (Calumet, Mich.) notched nine tackles including 2.5
for loss and a sack at NMU. The senior finished with a team-high
7.5 sacks this season and 18.5 for his career—third most
all-time at Tech … The Huskies’ 16 seniors finished
with a combined record of 25-17 over the last four years and at
least seven wins in three of those seasons … Tailback Akeem
Cason (Benton Harbor, Mich.) posted his second straight 100-yard
rushing game with 135 yards on 20 carries at Northern Michigan.
Cason had 63 of those yards on a season-long touchdown run. He
finished 749 yards, eight touchdowns and a 68.1 yards-per-game
average … Michigan Tech’s 89th season of varsity
football has been completed.
Northern Michigan - NMU ended the 2011 season
with a 21-18 loss to Michigan Tech in the annual Miner’s Cup
game from the Superior Dome…The Wildcats finished the season
4-7 overall and 3-7 in the GLIAC…Junior kicker Rockne
Belmonte broke the NMU record for field goals in a season on
Saturday, making his 15th kick of the year with his third quarter
42-yarder.…He finished 15-for-19 on the
season…Neither team scored in the first half…The two
teams combined to score points on the first four possessions of the
second half…23 seniors were introduced before the
game…Senior Carter Kopach finished his career with 6,764
yards of total offense for an average of 178 per game…Junior
running back Prince Young finished 40 yards short of 1,000 yards in
his first season as a Wildcat.
Northwood - Northwood ended its 2011 season with
a 30-14 loss at Ferris State Saturday afternoon (November 12) ...
the game was close until the final three minutes of the contest -
FSU scored nine points in the final 2:56 to break open a 21-14
contest ... the story of the day for the Timberwolves was sophomore
fullback Cameron Jackson (Dahlonega, Ga./Lumpkin) ... he ended the
day with 204 yards rushing, giving him 1,078 yards for the season
... he is the first Northwood running back since 1989 to reach the
1000 yard mark ... Larry Williams gained 1099 yards for the
Timberwolves that season ... Ryan Whittum (Livonia,
Mich./Churchill) once again led the Northwood defense with 11
tackles ... he finished the year with 90 tackles, 31 more than
anyone else on the team.
Ohio Dominican - ODU largely grounded the
UIndy’s GLIAC-best passing offense to 255 yards, 32.5 yards
below their average, and picked off QB Chris Mills twice after he
entered the game with a conference-low three interceptions, for the
38-26 Senior Day victory…Possessed the ball for 10:19 in the
fourth quarter, rushing 20 times and passing just twice to ice
win…Sophomore DB Justin Bell accounted for two turnovers,
forcing his third fumble of season, returning it 55 yards to put
ODU up 24-6 and collecting his fourth interception, returning it
for 16 yards…He holds ODU career record with 155 return
yards on three fumble returns, all coming this year and is only
player in school history to record more than one touchdown off a
turnover…School all-time rushing leader, senior RB Mike
Noffsinger, eclipsed 100 yards on ground for school record
fifth-straight game and ninth time this year with 109 yards on ODU
single-game record 32 attempts…With pair of scores, he
overtook sole possession of first with 31 career
touchdowns…Senior DB James Dews had team-high 11
tackles…Junior DB Eisen Hardy finished with nine tackles and
picked off his fourth pass, returning it 42 yards…In just
second year of Division II, Panthers improved by five wins over
last year, finishing on four-game win streak and 7-4 record, the
fifth time reaching seven wins in program’s eight-year
history.
Saginaw Valley State - Saginaw Valley ended their
regular season with a 49-24 loss to Grand Valley on Saturday. The
Cardinals were selected by the NCAA to participate in the 2011
Division II Playoffs. The Cardinals earned the No. 5 seed in
Super Region #3 and will travel to play No. 4 Minnesota Duluth on
Saturday (Nov. 19). SVSU who finished the regular season with
a 7-3 record overall and in the GLIAC is making its first
appearance in the NCAA Playoffs since they traveled to
Nebraska-Kearney in 2009. The Cardinals are making their
seventh appearance in the postseason since 2000. Minnesota
Duluth finished the season with an 9-2 record overall and claimed
their fourth straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
Championship (NSIC) this season. They are making their sixth
appearance in the NCAA Playoffs since 2002, winning the Division II
National Championship in 2008 and 2010.
Tiffin - Tiffin fell to Hillsdale 42-0 in
their season finale. James Capello completed 27 of 38 passes for
213 yards and 2 interceptions. Marcus Beaurem was the top receiver
with 45 yards on 7 catches, while also totaling 147 all-purpose
yards. He had 102 yards in kick returns. Obadiah Dykes had 42 yards
receiving while Bertram Marks had 38 and James Hall added 32 yards.
Mike Virgin was the top tackler for the Dragons, making 15 stops.
Logan Snell also got in on 10 tackles, while Carlton Watkins and
Rafael Cuellar had 8 tackles apiece. Mike Gomez, Phillip Morris,
and Theron Carter also registered 7 tackles.
Wayne State - Wayne State will be making the
first post-season tournament appearance in school history this
Saturday when the Warriors visit St. Cloud State for a Super Region
3 quarterfinal contest ... WSU set school records for points in a
season (391), yards per play (6.14), passing efficiency rating
(154.9), average yards per pass attempt (9.0), and touchdowns in a
season (52) ... senior running back Josh Renel (Rochester Hills,
Mich./Rochester Adams) surpassed the 1,000-yard plateau for the
season marking the seventh consecutive year a WSU back had at least
a 1,000-yard season ... Renel also passed Ed Skowneski (1972-75)
for fourth place on the all-time rushing yards list (2,465) ...
senior wide receiver Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) has 12
touchdown receptions, the most since Pierre Brown had 17 in 2000
... Burrell has also moved into second place on both the all-time
receiving yards chart (2,784) and TD receptions (24) ... junior
quarterback Mickey Mohner (Painesville, Ohio/Harvey) tied the WSU
single-season mark with 21 touchdown passes after tossing for three
scores on Saturday, including two to Burrell ... Mohner needs four
completions to become WSU’s career leader.
