GLIAC Football Players of the Week - Week 6

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following Week 6 action. Ashland junior tight end Adam Shaheen earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Wayne State senior linebacker Valorian Cunningham captured GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Saginaw Valley State sophomore kicker Alex Kenrick claimed GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week accolades for the second time this season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Adam Shaheen, Ashland

Ashland junior tight end Adam Shaheen tied the AU mark for touchdown catches in a game with four, originally set by wide receiver Vance Kinney against Slippery Rock in 1992. Shaheen finished Saturday's game (W, 45-7 vs. Northwood) with seven catches for 109 yards, giving him five career 100-yard games and three in a row. In the last three games, Shaheen has 24 catches for 426 yards and eight touchdowns. The Ashland single-season record for touchdown receptions is 12 by Joe Horn in 2010. Shaheen has 11 in the first six games of 2016 and becomes the first tight in league history to earn GLIAC Player of the Week honors.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Valorian Cunningham, Wayne State

Wayne State senior linebacker Valorian Cunningham totaled a team-high 12 tackles (next best player recorded six) with six solo stops and six assisted tackles. Cunningham had a half-sack late in the fourth quarter with WSU holding a 31-20 lead. On Findlay's final drive, Cunningham forced a fumble which sealed the win. He also played well early in the game blocking a 23-yard UF field goal attempt on the Oilers first drive of the game.
