BIG RAPIDS -- Ferris State junior quarterback Travis Russell (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was honored on Thursday evening in Texas with the NCAA's prestigious Elite 90 Award.

The Elite 90 award is presented on an annual basis at each of the nation's 90 NCAA Championships and recognizes the top scholar-athlete at the finals site for their outstanding work in the classroom and holding the highest grade point average. The award was presented during a special team championship celebration honoring the two squads set to compete in the national championship game at the Main Event in Frisco.

A junior, Russell holds a 3.73 GPA in marketing and has helped the Bulldogs reach the NCAA Division II National Championship game. Along with his work in the classroom, Russell has also played a key role over the past three years for the Bulldogs as one of the team's top quarterbacks and is a two-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic Team honoree. This season, Russell has played in 10 games and completed 64% of his passes while running for more than 300 yards and four scores on the ground.

The Bulldogs will face Valdosta State (Ga.) in the D2 National Championship Game on Saturday in McKinney, Texas, at 4 p.m. (ET). The game will be televised live across the country on ESPNU.
