BAY CITY, Mich. - Ferris State University junior guard Kenny Brown (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) and Wayne State University senior center Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) have been chosen as the GLIAC Men's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week", respectively.

GLIAC North Division Player of the Week:

Ferris State University junior guard Kenny Brown averaged a team-high 21 points per game as the Bulldogs won a pair of non-conference home contests this past week.  The 6-2 Brown scored a game-high 24 points with three rebounds and an assist in the Bulldogs’ 82-46 triumph over Olivet on Tuesday (Nov. 22).  He then added a game-best 18 points with five rebounds and two assists as FSU topped previously unbeaten Wisconsin-Parkside by a 70-65 count on Saturday (Nov. 26).  Brown totaled 42 points and eight rebounds in the two-game stretch.

Wayne State senior center Ike Udanoh was named to the Drury Classic All-Tournament team after averaging a double-double in  wins over Northeastern State and Drury.  Udanoh tallied a career-high 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting in the Warriors overtime victory over the RiverHawks. Against the host Panthers on Saturday, he contributed 16 points and 15 rebounds. For the weekend, Udanoh averaged 22 points, 13 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.  He currently ranks third in the GLIAC in rebounding (10.5 per game).

Ashland Eagles

The Eagles won their only game last week, a 108-95 triumph over Point Park on Wednesday. Junior Evan Yates (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) led AU with 31 points on 11-for-14 shooting and 18 rebounds. The 31 points were the most by an AU player since the 2007-08 season and the first time an AU player eclipsed 30 points since Nov. 18, 2008, the same date the Eagles last put up triple digit points (109-99 win over Mount Vernon). Yates is averaging 21.7 points and 17.3 rebounds on the young season and is shooting 63.9 percent from the field. Junior Ronnie Steward (Columbus, Ohio/Akron) had 24 points and five 3-pointers in the game to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Redshirt-freshman Jorian Hudson (Cincinnati, Ohio/University of Cincinnati) added 14 points for the Eagles. AU shot 48.8 percent from the field in the game and 37.5 percent from 3-point range. Sophomore Jordan Berlin (Wilmington, Ohio) tossed in 11 points and had seven boards and seven assists.

Ferris State Bulldogs

FSU won a pair of non-conference home contests this past week at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena.  The Bulldogs beat Olivet by an 82-46 count in their 2011-12 home opener on Tuesday (Nov. 22) night before pulling out a 70-65 victory over previously unbeaten Wisconsin-Parkside in regional play on Saturday (Nov. 26) at home... Junior guard Kenny Brown (Farmington Hills/Harrison) averaged a team-high 21 points per game while shooting 50% (13-26) from the floor and 61.5% (8-13) from beyond the three-point arc in the two-game stretch.  His figures included a game-best 24 points versus Olivet and a contest-high 18 points against the Rangers... Junior forward Daniel Sutherlin (Detroit/Renaissance) added 14 points and a contest-high 15 rebounds in a double-double showing against Wisconsin-Parkside.  Meanwhile, senior forward Jerrell Sanders (Grand Rapids/Creston) tallied 12 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists in Saturday’s victory. Sutherlin managed 12 points and 11.5 rebounds a contest in the two wins.

Findlay Oilers

The Oilers claimed a 90-84 win at home over Cedarville on November 22 in their only action last week.  The Oilers shot a season-high 54.1 percent from the field and connected on a season-high 11-of-19 (57.9%) shots from behind the three point line.  Sophomore forward Greg Kahlig led the charge with 26 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists.  On the season, Kahlig is averaging 15.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.3 steals, 2.0 assists and 1.8 blocks per game.  Junior guard Aaron Robinson hit a career-high 5-of-7 shots from three point range in the win while junior forward Jack Smith narrowly missed on a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers

GVSU moved to 2-1 with an 82-60 win over Marygrove on Saturday night in Allendale. Both the Laker starters and reserves each scored 41 points in the win. Grand Valley State’s bench has outscored its opponents 100-23 in three games this season…senior guard James Thomas (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the Lakers with 19 points, while freshman forward Ben Lanning (Grandville, MIch.) tallied 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds in just 19 minutes off the bench…Grand Valley State is shooting 30-of-68 from three-point range this season for a 44.1 percentage. Its opponents are just 15-of-52 for a 28.8 percent clip. The Lakers have just 23 turnovers in their first three games, while forcing 42 miscues.

Hillsdale Chargers

The Hillsdale College men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the new season Saturday, falling at Lewis 62-52…The Flyers held the Chargers to their season-low in points scored in the game…Earlier in the week, the Chargers picked up a win over another GLVC opponent, Illinois-Springfield…In that game, Hillsdale scored a season-high 84 points…Senior guard Tyler Gerber made a career-high six 3-point field goals, and the team made 11, which was also a season-high…Gerber had made just two 3-pointers in the entire season before Wednesday’s game…Saturday’s loss was the first in the month of November for Hillsdale since 2009…The Chargers currently lead the GLIAC in fewest points allowed per game (56.8)…Hillsdale opens up conference play this week on the road versus Ashland Thursday and Lake Erie College Saturday.

Lake Erie Storm

Lake Erie trailed by double digits in the first half but pulled away in commanding fashion from Mercyhurst College Sunday en route to a 67-51 victory in its lone game on the week.   The Storm win avenged a 92-66 loss to the Lakers last season in Erie.  After starting the season with a loss to DI Detroit Mercy, Lake Erie is now 3-0 against NCAA Division II teams. Lake Erie was lead by senior guard Brandon Smith (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford/Cuyahoga Community College) with game-high tying 14 points. Following closely behind was redshirt freshman Jamil Dudley (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon) with a career-high 13 points, 11 of which came in the first half, including three three-pointers.  The Storm also got solid contributions at the big man spots as sophomore Rich Austin (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) went for 10 points and six rebounds with senior Matt Grendel (Independence, Ohio/Independence) adding eight points and seven boards.  Austin is still leading the Storm on the season in both scoring (14.8 ppg.) and rebounding (8.2 ppg.). 

Lake Superior State Lakers

LSSU finished 1-1 at last weekend’s Angus Nicoson Classic hosted by Indianapolis. The Lakers posted an impressive 64-62 victory over regional opponent Indianapolis, and lost 99-92 in double overtime to St. Joseph’s. Senior guard Kyle Hunt (Macomb, Mich.) averaged 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, scoring a season-high 27 points against St. Joseph’s. Sophomore guard Derek Billing (Anna, Ohio) averaged 15.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Junior forward Derek Kinney (Romulus, Mich.) is ranked fourth in the GLIAC in average rebounds per game (8.9) and 10th in scoring (15.4 ppg). Billing is ranked fourth in the GLIAC in average assists per game (4.3) and fifth in steals (2.3). LSSU opens GLIAC play Thursday at Saginaw Valley State, then travels to Northwood on Saturday. Last season, the Lakers were 2-0 against SVSU, including an 85-78 overtime road win, and 0-2 against NU.

Michigan Tech Huskies

Michigan Tech will host rival Northern Michigan Saturday (Dec. 3) after splitting a pair of games at the InnKeepers Beaver Classic in Bemidji, Minn. Tech defeated Southwest Minnesota State 68-61 and lost to Bemidji State 63-58. All three of Tech’s losses this season have come by a combined seven points. Senior Mike Hojnacki moved into 21st all-time in scoring in school history with 1,046 points. Freshman Ben Stelzer started the first two games of his career in Bemidji. Junior Ali Haidar has led the team in scoring in three games this season and rebounding three times. Sophomore Austin Armga ranks seventh in the league in field goal percentage (.588). Tech currently ranks third in the league in two categories, field goal percentage (.488) and 3-point field goal percentage (.395).

Northern Michigan Wildcats

The Northern Michigan men’s basketball team is now 1-3 on the season following an 81-76 loss to St. Joseph’s College (Nov. 25) and a 80-64 loss to the University of Indianapolis (Nov. 26)...Senior guard DeAndre Taylor led the Wildcats over the weekend with 29 points and 16 rebounds… Senior center Jared Benson also contributed 28 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks…NMU travels to UM-Dearborn on (Nov. 28) and opens GLIAC play against rival Michigan Tech on (Dec. 3).

Northwood Timberwolves

Northwood was idle last week.  The Timberwolves will return to action December 1 at Findlay. Game time is set for 8 p.m.

Ohio Dominican Panthers

Ohio Dominican was idle last week.  The Panthers are back in action for GLIAC opener on Thursday at 7:30 against Grand Valley and at 3:00 p.m. Saturday against Ferris State.

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals

SVSU went 1-1 this past week. The Cardinals dropped their first game on Monday at home against Division I Miami University, 71-61. SVSU would bounce back to defeat Cedarville University 88-76 on Saturday (Nov. 26) for their second win of the season. Senior Greg Foster tied a career high with 30 points in the victory over Cedarville. Junior Chris Webb posted a team high in points against Miami with 19 points, while also scoring 19 points in the victory over Cedarville. Michael Fugate recorded 12 points for the Cardinals against Miami and is currently third on the team in scoring at 13.2 points per game. Webb leads SVSU in scoring with 18.8 points per game while Foster ranks second at 14.8 points. Through five games, the Cardinals are averaging 74.6 points per game and are shooting .420 from the floor. SVSU is once again one of the most consistent teams from the free-throw line, shooting .813 (109-for-134) from the line, and currently have five players shooting 75 percent or better.

Tiffin Dragons

In the loss to Wheeling Jesuit, Karl Finley had 28 points and was 11-of-22 from the floor and 6-of-12 from behind the arc, Joe Graessle had 15 points and seven assists, Travis Spahr had 13 points and 11 rebounds while Brandon Harris had 10 points, three steals and blocked three shots.…Karl Finley needs just 14 points to score his 1000th career collegiate point (489 at Macomb CC, 487 at TU)…Joe Graessle has hit at least one 3-pointer in 32 consecutive games, in fact he has hit one in every collegiate game of his career.

Wayne State Warriors

After winning both games at the Drury Invitational last weekend in Springfield, Mo., the Warriors begin conference play on the road this weekend at Lake Erie (Thursday) and Ashland (Saturday) … senior center Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) and junior guard Cole Prophet (Sandusky, Ohio) were both named to the all-tournament team … Udanoh had a career-high 28 points in the overtime win over Northeastern State, then tallied a career-best 15 rebounds in the victory over Drury … he has three straight double-doubles on the year … Prophet contributed 24 points, five assists and five rebounds in the two wins … junior guard Mike Hollingsworth (Utica, Mich.) extended his streak of consecutive double-digit scoring outputs to 23 … the last time he did not reach double figures was Dec. 29 vs. East Stroudsburg when he scored seven points in 18 minutes before missing the second half with an injury ...  Hollingsworth has scored in double digits in 28 of his last 29 games and 31 of his last 33 contests.
