Four GLIAC Men's Basketball Players Selected to the 2014 Daktronics Midwest All-Region Teams

USI’s Nelson Leads Daktronics, Inc. All-Midwest Region Team

            Southern Indiana’s Aaron Nelson is the 2014 Daktronics, Inc. Midwest Region player of the year. Nelson was selected by a vote of the sports information directors in the region. Nelson is joined on the first team by Lake Superior State’s Derek Billing, Findlay’s Greg Kahlig, Hillsdale’s Tim Dezelski and Mike Carlson of Truman State.

            Those five players will be included on the national Daktronics All-America ballot.

            Nelson is a 6-8, 249-pound senior forward who produces 19.4 ppg., and 12.9 rpg. He leads the nation in rebounds per game and set a school, single-game record of 27 rebounds this season against Kentucky State. He established a school single season record for rebounds (362).

            Nelson has 24 double-doubles this season and has put together 15 consecutive double-doubles. USI won the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship last weekend. Nelson was named the Tournament MVP, was the GLVC Co-Player of the Year and is a GLVC First Team pick. The Screaming Eagles are 25-5, ranked 14th in the nation and headed to the NCAA playoffs.

            Billing, a 6-2, 185-pound senior guard, has led Lake Superior State to a 26-5 record. The Lakers are going to the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament. Lake Superior State is ranked 25th in the country and won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title. Billing is averaging 21.1 ppg., which is fifth in the conference. He is sixth in career points (1,769) at Lake Superior State and is the program’s career leader in three-point field goals (280). Billing was a GLIAC First Team selection and a Capital One Second Team Academic All-American

            Kahlig is the 2014 GLIAC Player of the Year and the GLIAC Tournament MVP. The 6-6, 215-pounds senior forward set a conference single-game record for points (55) against Walsh in the GLIAC Tournament. Kahlig has three games this year where he’s scored 40 or more points and he’s the leading scorer in the Midwest Region. He has shot 50.9 percent from the floor, 43.1 percent from three-point range and 81.4 percent at the free throw line. Findlay won the GLIAC championship and is headed to the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament with a 24-5 record. The Oilers are ranked 21st in the country.

            Dezelski is the only player in the nation this year to score 600 or more points, grab 250 or more rebounds and hand out 100 or more assists. The 6-6, 230-pound senior forward averaged 22.9 ppg., and 9.6 rpg. He led the GLIAC in rebounds per game and was third in scoring. A First Team All-GLIAC choice, Dezelski ranked in the GLIAC’s Top 10 in 10 statistical categories. Hillsdale went 18-9.

            Carlson was the GLVC Co-Player of the Year. He averaged 21.3 ppg., 7.2 rpg., and shot 54.4 percent from the floor. He scored 575 points this season, that’s the second highest single season total in Truman State history. The 6-9, 200-pound senior forward is eighth in career points at Truman  State. He was named to the GLVC First Team and is a member of the GLVC All-Defensive Team. He recorded six double-doubles and scored a season-high 48 points against Missouri S&T.
