BAY CITY, Mich. - University of Findlay senior forward Greg Kahlig (Fort Recovery, Ohio / Fort Recovery) was named the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's basketball "Player of the Year" in voting conducted by the league's head coaches. Saginaw Valley State University forward C.J. Turnage (Milan, Mich. / Milan) was tabbed  "Freshman of the Year" while Lake Superior State University's Steve Hettinga was named "Coach of the Year" by his peers.

Kahlig has led the Oilers to a 21-5 record this season and is leading the GLIAC in scoring at 23.9 points per game.  He has been named the South Division "Player of the Week" five times this year and sports averages of 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.  The Ft. Recovery, Ohio native ranks sixth nationally in points per game and has posted two 40-point outings this year.  His 537 points scored in GLIAC games this year is also the second highest mark in league history.  Kahlig has poured in 1,762 points during his career with the Oilers, the seventh highest total in school history.

Turnage had a breakout freshman campaign for the Cardinals in 2013-14.  The 6-5 forward led the team with 16.9 points per game in 22 games played, posting a GLIAC-best field goal percentage of 64.2%.  His points-per-game average ranked ninth in the league and is the most for the SVSU men since the 2008-09 season.  C.J. grabbed 5.5 rebounds per contest as well, which led the Cards for the season.  Turnage turned in eight 20-plus point performances, including a career-high 27 points in games at Northern Michigan (2/13) and at home versus Northwood (2/27).

Hettinga, in his seventh season as head coach at LSSU, was named GLIAC "Coach of the Year" after leading the Lakers to a 26-4 overall record and the 2014 GLIAC Championship. The 2013-14 Lakers have the second-most wins in school history and have won the outright conference title for the first time since 1978. The LSSU mentor became the school's all-time wins leader in men's basketball on Jan. 25 and he heads into the GLIAC Tournament win a LSSU career record of 116-83. He also led the Lakers to a North Division title in 2008-09. Four starters returned from last year's 16-13 squad that upset two opponents on its way to reaching the GLIAC Tournament championship game against Findlay. The Lakers, who were 18-4 in league play this season, got off to a 16-1 start and posted an impressive 12-2 road record.
