2017 GLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament Central
BAY CITY, Mich. -- The 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Basketball Tournament continued Saturday (March 4) afternoon with the No. 1 seed Ferris State and No. 6 Ashland both advancing to Sunday's title tilt. The weekend tournament is being hosted on the campus of Ferris State University.
No. 1 Ferris State 79, No. 4 Michigan Tech 71 -- BOX SCORE
The top-seeded Bulldogs outrebounded Michigan Tech 28-16 in the first half to gain a four-point edge (34-30) after 20 minutes of action, despite shooting sub-30 percent. After FSU extended the lead to double digits midway through the second half, Michigan Tech ripped off a 9-0 run to knot the contest at 64 all with 3:45 to play. However, a big triple from Greg Williams swayed momentum back to Ferris State as the Huskies could never catch back up.
Ferris State pulled away late thanks in part to knocking down 22-of-23 attempts from the foul line. Five Bulldogs reached double figures with senior Quentin Ruff setting the pace with 17 points, while GLIAC Player of the Year Zach Hankins posted 13 points and 12 rebounds. Michigan Tech sophomore Kyle Monroe led all scorers with 22 points, six rebounds and five assists.
No. 6 Ashland 100, No. 2 Findlay 69 -- BOX SCORE
The Ashland Eagles simply could not miss from three-point range tonight as AU eliminated the Findlay Oilers from the conference tournament. Ashland connected on 10-of-its-first-12 three-point attempts; finishing with a new GLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament single-game record of 21 triples on 29 attempts (72.4%). The Eagles three-point frenzy also clinches the most three-point field goals ever made in the series (31) of a GLIAC Tournament with one game to play on Sunday.
Overall from the field, Ashland connected on 36-of-54 shooting resulting in 66.7 percent clip. Ashland's Adrian Cook led the Eagles with 22 points on 7-for-10 shooting, while Nick Bapst came off the bench for 20 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Findlay's Elijah Kahlig recorded a game-high 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting.
