ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Mike Wells Jr. was selected the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Week after the 5-foot-8, 170-pound guard averaged 27.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists to lead Saginaw Valley State University to a pair of GLIAC victories last week. Wells Jr. scored a career-high 35 points, including 31 points in the second and 21 consecutive points in one stretch to lead the Cardinals to a 72-66 win over GLIAC South Division-leading Ashland University. He added another 19 points with 6 assists in an 86-69 win over Tiffin University.
For the week, Wells Jr. shot 67 percent (18-for-27) from the field, including 8-of-10 three-pointers, and he was also 10-for-11 from the free throw line. Saginaw Valley State has three consecutive wins, improving to 8-11 overall (5-6 GLIAC).
Saginaw Valley hosts Northwood University on Saturday (Jan. 27) in another home matchup, which will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. at O'Neill Arena.
