Saginaw Valley's Wells, Michigan Tech's Monroe Named GLIAC Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly men's basketball awards following Week 12 of the 2017-18 campaign. Michigan Tech sophomore forward Kyle Monroe earned GLIAC Men's Basketball North Division honors for the fifth time this year, while Saginaw Valley senior guard Mike Wells Jr. captured South Division accolades for the second time this year.


SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Mike Wells Jr., Saginaw Valley

Saginaw Valley State senior guard Mike Wells Jr. continued his stellar play over the weekend in leading the Cardinals to a pair of victories over GLIAC North Division opponents. Wells went-off for a career-high 44 points, adding a career-best seven assists with a pair of steams in SVSU's 105-94 double overtime win Thursday over Michigan Tech. He then scored 28 points with five assists and a career-high four steals in Saturday's 92-66 win over Northern Michigan. Wells shot 61.5% for the week, 58.8% from beyond the arc and had just two turnovers in 81 minutes of action. 


NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Kyle Monroe, Michigan Tech

Michigan Tech junior forward Kyle Monroe had an outstanding week once again for the Huskies, tying a school record for most points in a single game while breaking a GLIAC regular season game record. Monroe poured in 50 points against Saginaw Valley State and followed it up with 18 points in a win at Northwood on Saturday. Monroe is now tied with Larry Grimes in the Tech record books for most points in the single game. Grimes reached 50 points on January 29th 1972 against St. Cloud State. He averaged 34 points in the two games, was 20 of 34 from the field (58.8%), 9-of-18 from three point range (50.0%), and 19-of-23 at the free throw line (82.6%). He also averaged seven rebounds, two assists, and 3.5 steals per game. Monroe leads the GLIAC in scoring at 26.4 per game and is second in rebounds at 7.9 per contest.
