GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the opening weekend of the 2017 men's basketball season. Ferris State University senior guard Drew Cushingberry earned GLIAC Men's Basketball North Division honors, while Ashland redshirt senior forward Wendell Davis captured South Division accolades.
NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Drew Cushingberry, Ferris State
Ferris State University senior guard Drew Cushingberry has had a big start to the 2017-18 campaign for the nationally 10th-ranked Bulldogs, who are off to a 4-0 start after two weekends of action. Cushingberry has averaged 18.5 points along with five assists, five rebounds and nearly three steals per game in the stretch. He earned all-tournament team honors as FSU opened the year with back-to-back wins over nationally fifth and sixth-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas and Indiana (Pa.) at the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic on Nov. 3-4 in Evansville. He scored 21 points in the season opener vs. St. Thomas Aquinas before adding 16 points, five assists and four steals against IUP. This past weekend, he guided FSU to wins over regional foes Quincy and Missouri-St. Louis at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena. He notched a team-best 19 points with six assists, three blocks and three steals in Friday's win over the Hawks before coming back with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal against UMSL. Over the four-game stretch, Cushingberry is shooting 49% from the floor and 43% from three-point range along with 79% at the line. He's totaled 74 points, 19 rebounds, 19 assists, 11 steals and four blocks to date.
SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Wendell Davis, Ashland
Ashland redshirt senior forward Wendell Davis averaged 28 points, five rebounds and four assists while shooting 59.5 percent from the field in two Ashland wins last week. Davis scored 27 points on 11-for-20 shooting with six assists and three rebounds in a 73-58 win over Lake Erie last Friday. It was his first competitive action since the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Davis added 29 points on 11-for-17 shooting in a 64-56 win at Ohio Dominican on Sunday. He also grabbed seven boards and dished out two assists. Davis was named a Preseason All-American by Street & Smith's and the Basketball Times after missing all of last season due to injury.
