UWP's Flanigan and SVSU's Hoskins claim men's basketball weekly honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced player of the week awards for Week 15 of the 2018-19 men's basketball season. Parkside senior forward Chavares Flanigan earned GLIAC Men's Basketball North Division Player of the Week honors, while Saginaw Valley State sophomore guard Darnell Hoskins Jr. was named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week.


NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chavares Flanigan - Parkside

Senior forward Chavares Flanigan (Hanover Park, Ill.) led the Rangers to two close home wins, first over Lake Superior State, 60-58, and then over Ferris State, 66-59. In the win over LSSU, Flanigan hit the game-winning layup under five seconds to beat the Lakers and held LSSU leading scorer Malek Adams to just three points. He totaled 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals in Thursday night's win. In the victory over Ferris State, Flanigan compiled 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. He led the Rangers' defense, which limited both opponents to few than 60 points. LSSU came in ranked No. 3 in scoring offense and FSU was No. 1 in the GLIAC, both averaging over 80 points per game.


SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Darnell Hoskins Jr. - Saginaw Valley State

Sophomore guard Darnell Hoskins Jr. (Dayton, Ohio) led the Cardinals to a home sweep as SVSU beat Wayne State, 72-59, on Thursday night before posting a 59-56 victory over No. 18 Ashland on Saturday. Hoskins averaged 26.0 ppg, 4.0 apg and 3.0 rpg in the two contests. The highlight of the weekend came in his career-best 28-point performance in the win Saturday over the Eagles, where he hit a pair of late triples, including the game-winner with two seconds remaining. In Thursday's victory over Wayne State, he became the program's single season leader in three-point field goals. He now has 83, which is nine more than the previous record of 74.
