SVSU’s Skidmore Named “Freshman of the Year,” Tiffin’s Roggow Tabbed “Coach of the Year”

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Ashland University senior Jay Overy (Grafton, Ohio) has earned the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Golf "Athlete of the Year" award as announced by the conference office. Overy posted the lowest stroke average among the GLIAC’s men’s golfers this season. Saginaw Valley State University rookie Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich./Home school) was named the conference's "Freshman of the Year" while Tiffin University head coach Darby Roggow was tabbed as the GLIAC "Coach of the Year".

Overy has been the anchor of AU’s program for the last four seasons. This year, he was the medalist at the Northwood Invitational and was third at Saginaw Valley State’s Al Watrous Memorial Invitational.  He tied for second at the NCAA regional event last fall at South Haven, Mich., and was fourth at the GLIAC championships.  At this spring’s NCAA regional in Noblesville, Ind., the senior finished in a tie for fourth.  Thanks in large part to Overy, the Eagles have qualified for the upcoming NCAA Division II Super Regional.

Skidmore, a red-shirt freshman on the SVSU golf team, excelled in his first season of collegiate competition as he has been the top finisher for the Cardinals in nine of ten events this season. Micah finished in the top-20 eight times, including three tournaments inside the top five with his best coming at the The Jewell where he posted back-to-back rounds of one-under-par 71 to finish runner-up, one shot behind the medalist.

Roggow was named GLIAC “Coach of the Year” after helping guide the Dragons to one of the best year’s in school history. Roggow, who coached three All-GLIAC performers this season, helped lead TU to its selection to the NCAA Midwest/South Regional while also finishing second at the GLIAC Championships on Oct. 3. Overall the Dragons have placed fourth or higher in six different tournaments. The Draongs won the Great Lakes Regional hosted by Indianapolis on April 9 while also winning the Kyle Ryman Memorial on October 17. Tiffin also finished second at the Findlay Invitational on Oct. 9.

Joining Overy and Skidmore on the 2012 All-GLIAC First Team are: senior Michael Schmitmeyer of the University of Findlay; sophomore Trent Davison of Ferris State University; and senior Nick Gunthorpe and sophomore Chris Cunningham of Grand Valley State.

The 2012 All-GLIAC Second Team includes: sophomore Marcus Hunt of Findlay; senior Dillon Klein and junior Blake DeBruyn of Tiffin; senior Garrett Simons of Ferris State; senior Travis Shooks of Grand Valley State; and junior Brendan Jenkins of Ashland.
