Grand Valley State Takes 2011 GLIAC Men's Golf Championship

Bath, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's golf team took home the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship on Monday (Oct. 3) at Eagle Eye Golf Club with a 16-stroke victory after shooting an 887 54-hole total to claim the program's fifth GLIAC title in program history and first since 2009.

GVSU shot rounds of 290, 295 and 302 to win the championship with a +23 overall score, outdistancing Tiffin (+39). Those two schools were the runaway top two followed by Wayne State (+50), Northwood (+51) and Ferris State (+52) in the top five.

The Lakers were led by sophomore Chris Cunningham and senior Nick Gunthorpe who finished first and second in the individual results as Cunningham claimed the individual GLIAC Championship with a one-over 217 after shooting rounds of 73, 71, 73.

Just behind him was Gunthorpe who carded a 219 (73, 72, 74) at three-over par.

Cunningham is the first Laker to claim medalist honors at the GLIAC Championship since Matt Malloure did it in 2007, also with a 217 54-hole score.

Ashland finished in sixth place (+57), followed by Findlay in seventh (+63), Saginaw Valley State in eighth (+66), Lake Superior State in ninth (+82), Ohio Dominican in tenth (+85), Lake Erie in 11th (+88) and Northern Michigan in 12th (+102).
