Five GLIAC Golfers Named to the Division II Ping All-Midwest Region Team

NORMAN, Okla. – Five Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) golfers were named to the Division II PING All-Region team as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

The five GLIAC student-athletes named to the All-Midwest Region team were: sophomore Trent Davison (Rockford, Mich.) and senior Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge, Mich.) of Ferris State University; senior Jay Overy (Grafton, Ohio) of Ashland University; senior Michael Schmitmeyer (St. Mary's, Ohio) of the University of Findlay; and freshman Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich./Home school) of Saginaw Valley State University.

Davison claimed All-GLIAC First Team accolades in 2011-12 after helping the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament.  He posted nine top-10 tournament performances in 11 contests this season.  Davison finished in the top five at five different tournaments, including earning medalist honors at the NCAA-II Regional Tournament #2 - The Jewell held in Georgetown, Ky. (March 30-April 1).  Overall, he placed among the top 20 golfers nine times and was in the top 10 six times this year.

A 2011-12 All-GLIAC Second Team honoree, Simons helped the Bulldogs to an NCAA Tournament berth this past season.  He placed among the top 10 performers in four tournaments this campaign, including a season-best share of fourth place in the season-opening Saginaw Valley State Invitational (Sept. 10-11).  Simons played in 10 of 11 outings for the Bulldogs and was among the top 20 finishers eight times.

Overy has been the anchor of AU’s program for the last four seasons. This year, he was the medalist at the Northwood Invitational and was third at Saginaw Valley State’s Al Watrous Memorial Invitational.  He tied for second at the NCAA regional event last fall at South Haven, Mich., and was fourth at the GLIAC championships.  At this spring’s NCAA regional in Noblesville, Ind., the senior finished in a tie for fourth.

Schmitmeyer, a first team All-GLIAC selection this season, finished second in the conference with a 72.57 scoring average. The 2009 GLIAC Freshman of the Year, Schmitmeyer earned second team all-conference honors during his freshman and junior seasons and was a first team all-league pick during his sophomore year.

Skidmore, a redshirt freshman for the SVSU golf team, excelled in his first season of collegiate competition as was the top finisher for the Cardinals in nine of 10 events this season. He finished off his season with a trip to NCAA Super Regionals where he fired a first round 70 (-2) before dropping back to finish in a tie for 28th position.  Micah finished in the top-20 eight times, including three tournaments inside the top five with his best coming at the The Jewell where he posted back-to-back rounds of one-under-par 71 to finish runner-up, one shot behind the medalist.
