BAY CITY, Mich. -  Ashland University senior Jay Overy (Midview, Ohio/Grafton) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf "Athlete of the Week" after claiming medalist honors at the the Northwood Invitational at the Currie West Golf Course over the weekend.

GLIAC Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week

Jay Overy - Ashland University
(SR, Midview, Ohio/Grafton)

Ashland senior Jay Overy earned medalist honors at last week’s Northwood Invitational.  Overy shot a three-under-par score of 141 (69-72) to win the tournament by two strokes. AU has played two tournaments this fall and Overy has finished in the top three in both. A week ago, the Eagles won the Saginaw Valley State Invitational and Overy was third. Overy was 12th a year ago at the NCAA regional event and sixth at the 2010 GLIAC Championships.

Ashland - The Eagles finished second at last week’s Northwood Invitational. AU and Ferris State shot 593.  Northwood’s winning score was 589.  AU senior Jay Overy (Grafton, Ohio/Midview) shot 141 to win the tourney by two strokes.  Junior Brendan Jenkins (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) finished in a tie for 10th. He shot 148.

 

 


Ferris State - The Ferris State University men’s golf team came home with a tie for second place after final round play on Sunday (Sept. 18) at the Northwood Invitational held in Midland, Mich. The Bulldogs, who led the 13-team competition with a 295 score following Saturday’s opening round, posted a 298 in the second round and finished four strokes behind tournament host and champion Northwood... NU carded a tourney-low round of 289 on Sunday after shooting a 300 in first round action to conclude the 36-hole event with a 589 score. Both FSU and Ashland carded 593 scores with Tiffin coming in fourth overall at 596... Bulldog junior golfer Tyler Robinson led FSU as he finished tied for fifth place in the field with a two-round total of 146 (+4) on the par 72 course measuring 7,056 yards. He placed five strokes behind medalist Jay overy of Ashland, who shot a 141. Robinson had rounds of 76 and 70, respectively... Senior Garrett Simons was right behind Robinson as he posted scores of 75 and 72 to finish with a 147 (+5) and a tie for eighth place overall.

 


Findlay - The University of Findlay men’s golf team finished in a tie for fifth place with Saginaw Valley State University at the Northwood Invitational, which concluded on Sunday, September 18 at the Curry Golf Course in Midland, Michigan.  The Oilers shot a two-day score of 606 (311, 295) and were led by Marcus Hunt, who finished third with an even-par 144 (74, 70).  Michael Schmitmeyer tied for fifth with a 146 (76, 70) to aid the Oilers at the event.




Grand Valley State - The Lakers finished seventh at this past weekend’s Northwood Invitational, shooting a two round 609. Grand Valley State was led by senior Nick Gunthorpe who shot a second round 70 (-2) and finished with a 146 (+2) for the tournament, placing him fifth in the individual standings. Sophomore Chris Cunningham also had a solid final round, shooting a 74 (+2) for a 153 (+9) and a 26th place finish as an individual. The Lakers will now prepare to host the NCAA Midwest Regional Fall Invite at Hawkshead G.C. in South Haven, Mich.

 

 

 

Lake Erie Storm - Junior Mike Guarino (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) tied for 17th individually and the Lake Erie College men's golf team posted a ninth-place team finish after the final round of the Northwood University Invitational at Currie West Golf Course In Midland, Mich.  Guarino shot 74-76-150 (+6) to finish as Lake Erie's low scorer for the second time in as many tournaments this fall. Senior Frank Whites III (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) was three strokes behind at 78-78-153 (+9) and classmate Matt Hennessey (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) was the next best Storm player at 80-76-156 (+12).   Whites tied for 26th while Hennessey tied for 42nd. As a team, the Storm was 12 strokes behind eighth place Wayne State University with a team score of 630.  Host Northwood won the team title with a score of 589.  Ashland University's Jay Overy was the individual medalist at 141.

 


Lake Superior State - Lake Superior State placed 11th among 13 teams at the Northwood Invitational. Freshman Doug Piesko (Washington, Mich.) and junior Sean Stubbs (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) fired identical scores of 79-75—154 to lead LSSU and tie for 33rd place. Piesko currently owns the Lakers’ low average of 75.0. LSSU competes Sept. 25-26 in NCAA Regional #1 at South Haven, Mich.

 

 

 

 

Northern Michigan University Northern Michigan - The Northern Michigan golf team finished 10th at the Northwood Invitational on Currie West Golf Course in Midland last weekend. It was a two-day 36-hole tournament. Host Northwood won the tournament with a team score of 589. NMU finished 10th of 13 teams, scoring a 632 on the weekend. Mike Murphy and Jared Reid let the Wildcats as they both shot a 10-over 154. Both golfers shot a 75 on Saturday (Sept. 17) and a 79 on Sunday (Sept. 18). Colten Thewis shot 162 (83-79), tied for 65th place. Zach Ginop was 77th with a 167 (86-81). Adam Huss rounded NMU golfers with a 174 (81-93) in 85th place. NMU will travel to the NCAA Fall Regional on Sept. 25-26.

 



Northwood - The Northwood University men’s golf team placed first out of 13 teams at the Northwood Invitational Sunday afternoon (September 18). The two-day, 36-hole event was held at the Currie West Golf Course in Midland.  The course played as a 7,056 yard, par 72... It was Northwood’s first tournament victory since September 30, 2005.  NU also won the Northwood Invitational that day as well... Northwood entered Sunday’s round five shots behind first round leader Ferris State, 295-300.  But the Timberwolves had the best final round score by four shots over the rest of the field, carding a one-over par team score of 289.  FSU and Ashland tied for second at 593... Newcomer Gilles Medale (Valence D’Agen, France) led the way for the Timberwolves, carding rounds of 73 and 70 to finish with a one-under par total of 143.  He was second overall out of 89 golfers.  NU featured a balanced lineup, with four players finishing in the top-13 in the event.  Blair Turner (Midland, Mich.) tied for 10th at 148 (74-74), while Matt Ostby (Mt. Morris, Mich.) and Grant Peffer (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) each tied for 13th at 149.

 

 

Ohio Dominican Panthers - Following a first round that featured high winds and unseasonably chilly temperatures, the Ohio Dominican men’s golf team took advantage of better playing conditions in the second round of the afternoon to improve on their fourth position and finish second at the 36-hole ODU Kisor Classic at the Panthers’ home course of Cumberland Trail... With a solid team score of 312 in the tough morning weather, Columbus State was able to distance themselves for the team crown, while ODU, improved by 18 strokes, shooting the low team round  of the day with a total of 306 in the afternoon to finish comfortably in second, eight shots back... Seven Panthers, led by junior transfer Connor Stookey (Milford, OH), finished in the top-15 on Thursday. Stookey earned a fifth place finish after posting a total score of 153 (+9), including sharing a team low round of the day of 74 in the second 18 holes. Kevin Hartoin (Jr./Cincinnati, OH) shot 156 (82-74) to finish in a tie for eighth, while freshman Eric Brown (Batavia, OH) finished in 12th, shooting 159 (+15).

 

Saginaw Valley State University

Saginaw Valley State - The SVSU men’s golf team moved into a tie for fifth place after a final round 297 at the Northwood University Invitational at Currie West Golf Course in Midland, Mich. Red shirt freshman Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich.) lead the Cardinals with an even-par final round 72 to finish tied for 10th. Junior Adam Hansen (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western HS) finished one shot back of Skidmore (149) with a one-under par 71 on Sunday to tie for 13th. Freshman Wyatt Drost posted a second round 72 to move into a tie for 17th with a 150 total. Dustin Vogl (Bay City, Mich./Western HS) and Troy Quenneville (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne Catholic HS) rounded out the scoring with final rounds of 82 and 83, respectively to finish at 160. Dan Warner (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) tied for 13th place after posting a two-round 149 total playing as an individual in the tournament. The Cardinal golf team will compete in the first NCAA Regional of the 2011-2012 season at HawksHead Golf Course in South Haven, Mich. on Sunday (9/25).



Tiffin - A strong showing by the Tiffin University men’s golf team placed them fourth out of 13 teams at the Northwood Invitational... TU fired a 596 two-round total, missing out on a tie at 593 with Ferris State and Ashland by three strokes. Northwood won the overall event with a 589. Leading the way was Tyler Maranville, who finished fourth with an opening 74 followed by a second round 71 for 145. Dillon Klein also was consistent with rounds of 73 and 74 for 147 and 8th place. Jason Crow and Jon Klein followed with totals of 152 apiece, while Blake DeBruyn rounded out TU’s top five with a 157. Also posting scores for TU were Preston Robinette (155), Tyler Reis (169), and John Kime (171).

 

 

Wayne State University Wayne State - The WSU golf team finished in eighth place out of 13 teams at the Northwood Invitational, which concluded Sunday at Currie West. Wayne State turned team scores of 311 on Saturday and 307 on Sunday. Alex LaSerra (Jackson, Mich./Napoleon), who turned in a 153 (74-79) to tie for 26th place.  One stroke separated each of the next three scoring Warriors – Rob Favaro (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) tied for 33rd (78-76--154), Jack Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) tied for 39th (78-77--155) and Josh Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) tied for 42nd (81-75--156). Reid Dean (Fowlerville, Mich.) carded a 165 (81-84) to tie for 72nd. Playing individually were Todd Spangler (Grand Ledge, Mich.), who tied for 22nd (81-71--152), and Tyler Haksluoto (St. Clair Shores, Mich./South Lake) who tied for 39th (78-77--155).
