BAY CITY, Mich. -  Ferris State University sophomore Trent Davison (Rockford, Mich.) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf "Athlete of the Week" after  finishing in a tie for second place at the Fall Midwest Region Tournament held at Hawkshead Golf Course in South Haven, Michigan.

Trent Davison - Ferris State University
(Sophomore, Rockford, Mich.)

Ferris State University sophomore Trent Davison led the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish in the Fall Midwest Regional Tournament this past week as he placed tied for second overall in the 135-competitor field. Davison carded back to back rounds of 72 to finish at 144 overall and was only three strokes behind medalist Shawn Vanderwal of Drury (Mo.).  His play helped the Bulldogs move up from 11th place after the first round to finish second with a 593 team score in the event.

Ashland - AU finished 10th at last week’s NCAA regional tournament (Sept. 25-26) in South Haven, Mich.  Senior Jay Overy (Grafton, Ohio/Midview) finished in a tie for second, three strokes behind medalist Shawn Vanderwal of Drury.  AU has had three events this fall and Overy has finished in the top three in all three…up next for the Eagles is the Findlay Invitational, Oct. 8-9.

 

 


Ferris State - The Ferris State University men’s golf team stormed back in the final round to capture runner-up honors in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Invitational #1 Tournament, which wrapped up play on Monday (Sept. 26) in South Haven, Mich... The Bulldogs entered Monday’s second and final round tied for 11th place after a first round score of 306 on Sunday (Sept. 25), but came back to shoot a tourney-low round of 287 and finished only four strokes shy of champion Indianapolis.  Ferris posted a 593 team score over the two days while the Greyhounds shot rounds of 290 and 299 to finish at 589 overall... Ferris State was led by sophomore Trent Davison, who finished tied for second overall in the field with a 144 total.  He shot even par (72) in both rounds. Senior Garrett Simons battled back to shoot a team-low round of 70 over Monday’s 18 holes to tie for 14th place with a 147 afer posting a 77 in the first round... FSU junior Tyler Robinson tied for 23rd place at 150 (78-72), senior Gary Bissell tied for 33rd overall with a 152 (79-73) while sophomore Sam Stark came in tied for 92nd at 160 (80-80)... The Bulldogs will play host to the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 2-3, at Eagle Eye Golf Course in Bath, Mich.

 


Findlay - The UF men's golf team finished in a tie for sixth place with 601 (306, 295) at the first NCAA Regional event of the season on Monday, September 26 in South Haven, Michigan... Michael Schmitmeyer (76, 70 - 146) and Marcus Hunt (76, 70 - 146) tied for 11th place to lead the team... Logan Cooke (78, 73 - 151), Jake North (76, 82 - 158) and Jack Kastor (82, 84 - 166) also competed for Findlay at the event... The Oilers will be back in action again on October 2-3 when they compete at the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship.  The event is being hosted at the Eagle Eye Golf Course in Lansing, Michigan.




Grand Valley State - The Laker men’s golf team finished in third place out of 27 teams at this past weekend’s NCAA Fall Midwest Regional at Hawkshead G.C. in Southn Haven, Mich. After a round one score of 304 put GVSU in 10th place, they used a 295 on the final day to surge into a tie for third with a 599 total. Sophomore Chris Cunningham was the highest finishing Laker, placing 18th in the individual standings with a two-round total of 148 after posting two straight 74’s in the tournament. The leaders of day two of the tournament for the Lakers were sophomore Jack Rider and junior Chase Olsen who both shot a team-best 73 in the final round to lead the charge. Olsen finished the tournament with a 149 while Rider carded a 151. The Lakers will now get ready to participate in this weekend’s GLIAC Championship at Eagle Eye G.C. in Bath, Mich.

 

 

 

Lake Erie Storm - The Lake Erie College men's golf team posted a second day team score of 321 to finish in 25th place at the NCAA Divsion II Fall Midwest Regional Monday (Sept. 26) at Hawkshead Golf Course in South Haven, Mich... The Storm finished with a two-day team score of 641, one stroke behind William Jewell University.  Lake Erie was five shots ahead of Saint Joseph's College (Ind.)... Individually, junior Mike Guarino (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) tied for 66th with a 76-80-156 and was the Storm's top finisher.  Sophomore Tyler Walters (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) was next at 82-80-162, followed by senior Matt Hennessey (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) at 79-84-163... Senior Frank Whites III (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) and junior Troy Hunter (Aurora, Ohio/Crestwood) tied at 164... Indianapolis University won the team title with a 290-299-589, four strokes ahead of Ferris State University. Shawn Vanderwal of Drury University was the individual medalist with a score of 3-under 141... The Storm will compete in its second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships Oct. 2-3 at the Eagle Eye Golf Course at Hawk Hollow in Bath, Mich.

 


Lake Superior State - Freshman Doug Piesko (Washington, Mich.) tied for 33rd place to lead Lake Superior State, which placed 20th among 27 teams at the NCAA Midwest Fall Regional held Sunday and Monday. Piesko, who has a scoring average of 75.3, shot a 78-74—152 for LSSU. Sophomore Justin Helmholdt (Hastings, Mich.), who has a scoring average of 79.3, tied for 92nd with back-to-back 80s. The Lakers compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Oct. 2-3 in Lansing.

 

 

 

 

Northern Michigan University Northern Michigan - The NMU golf team finished 27th at the NCAA Midwest Fall Regional this past weekend. It was a two-day 36-hole tournament at Hawkshead Golf Course. The University of Indianapolis won the event with a team score of 589.  NMU finished 27th, shooting a 648 on the weekend... Jared Reid led the ‘Cats with a 10-over, 154 for the weekend. Reid shot a 77 on both days of the competition... Colten Thewis shot a 160 (77 and 83) to tie for 92nd place. Mike Murphy shot a 165 (88 and 77) and Adam Huss shot a 169 (86 and 83), good for tie of 122nd and 131st place respectively.  Rounding out the field for NMU was Zack Ginop, who shot a 173 (89 and 84), good for 134th place... NMU will travel to the GLIAC Championship on (Oct. 2-3). The conference championship is hosted by Ferris State at Eagle Eye Golf Course in Bath, Mich.

 



Northwood - The NU men’s golf team placed fifth out of 27 teams at the NCAA Fall Regional Sunday and Monday (September 25-26)... The 36-hole event was held at the HawksHead Golf Course, which played as a par-72 (7,003 yards)... Northwood was in second place after carding a team score of 296, but a second round 304 sent the Timberwolves back to fifth place with a total of 600.  Indianapolis was the overall winner at 589, followed by Ferris State at 593.  Grand Valley State and Northern Kentucky tied for third at 599, one stroke ahead of Northwood... Junior Blair Turner (Midland, Mich.) led the way for the Timberwolves.  He finished at three-over par after shooting rounds of 72 and 75 to tie for 14th.  Matt Ostby (Mt. Morris, Mich.) was one stroke behind Turner at 148 (74-74), good for a tie for 18th... Northwood will compete at the GLIAC Championships October 2-3.

 

 

Ohio Dominican Panthers - With a 10 shot improvement in Monday’s final round, the Ohio Dominican men’s golf team moved up to claim 18th at the NCAA Midwest Fall Regional at Hawkshead GC in Southaven, Michigan. The Panthers with a two-day score of 620 (315-310) beat out Illinois-Springfield by three shots for 18th and were only 14 strokes back of a 10th place finish. For the third consecutive event, junior Connor Stookey (Milford, OH) was the low scorer for ODU with a four-over par 148 (73-75), finishing in a three-way tie for 18th out of 135 golfers, while junior Kevin Hartoin (Cincinnati, OH) posted an 11-over 155. The remaining finishers, Gary Wright Jr. (Sr./Warsaw, OH) and freshmen Eric Brown (Batavia, OH) and Kyle Burgess (Lancaster, OH) were separated by just four strokes at 159, 161 and 162, respectively. Next up, the Panthers will compete at the GLIAC Championship, hosted by Ferris State at Eagle Eye GC in East Lansing Mich., beginning on Saturday, Oct. 2.

 

Saginaw Valley State University

Saginaw Valley State - The SVSU men’s golf team concluded the first NCAA Fall Midwest Regional of 2011-12 season with a second round 310 to finish at 612 overall, placing them 15th overall. Freshman Wyatt Drost (Charlevoix, Mich.) followed up his first round 69 with a second round 81 to finish tied for 23rd place. Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich./Homeschool) fired consecutive rounds of 76 to finish tied for 33rd place at 152.  Sophomore Adam Hansen (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western HS) followed his opening round 76 up with a team best 75 on day two to finish tied for 52nd with a two-day score of 154, while Dan Warner (Saginaw, Mich/Arthur Hill HS) would shoot matching rounds of 78 to finish tied for 66th overall with a 156.  Senior Troy Quenneville (Tecumseh, Ont./St. Anne Catholic HS) would enter the clubhouse with a two-day total of 164 and finish tied for 116th to round out the scoring for the Cardinals. SVSU returns to competition on Sunday (10/2) for the GLIAC Championship at Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath, Mich.



Tiffin - Tiffin University improved by 12 strokes on day two of the NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by Grand Valley State, shooting 311-299 for 610. Indianapolis won the event with a 589... Dillon Klein finished with the low score for the Dragons, shooting 72 on day one but falling off to 78 on day two for a 150 total. He just edged Jon Klein, who improved from 78 to 73 for 151... The next three Dragons also showed great improvement on day two, with Blake DeBruyn improving 7 strokes (80-73 for 153), Tyler Maranville cutting 5 strokes off (81-76 for 157) and Jason Crow shaving 7 strokes from his score (84-77 for 151).

 

 

Wayne State University Wayne State - In the first regional tournament of the 2011-12 season, the WSU golf team finished in 12th place out of 27 teams at HawksHead.  Wayne State turned in scores of 303 on Sunday and 306 on Monday... The Warriors (609) finished 20 strokes off the pace set by Indianapolis (290-299--589)...  Josh Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) led the WSU contingent with a three-over par 147 (73-74) to finish in a tie for 14th place.  His older brother Jack Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) tied for 40th (78-75--153)... One stroke separated Rob Favaro (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) and Todd Spangler (Grand Ledge, Mich.), who tied for 66th (79-77--156) and 71st (77-80--157) respectively.  Alex LaSerra (Jackson, Mich./Napoleon) shot 160 (75-85) and tied for 92nd... Wayne State will play in the 2011 GLIAC Championship which begins Sunday at Eagle Eye in Lansing.
