BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University senior Travis Shooks (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf "Athlete of the Week" after claiming medalist honors at the Findlay Invitational held at Red Hawk Run in Findlay, Ohio.

Senior Travis Shooks won his first
tournament of the season at the Findlay Invite, carding two
straight 70’s for a 140 total to four-under par. Shooks won
the tournament by two strokes and has two top-ten finishes. His
efforts helped lead GVSU to their second consecutive team victory
as the Lakers won by nine strokes, recording rounds of 293 and
290.

Ashland - The Ashland University men’s golf
team finished in a tie for fourth place out of 12 teams Sunday
(Oct. 9) at the Findlay Invitational, held at the Red Hawk Golf
Course. Grand Valley State shot 583 and won the team championship.
Tiffin (592) was second and Wayne State (592) finished third.
Ashland and the host Oilers both shot 602 and ended the two-day
event deadlocked in fourth place. Grand Valley State’s Travis
Shooks was the medalist. He shot 140. Findlay’s Michael
Schmitmeyer was the runner-up. He shot 142. AU’s best score
was turned in by senior Steven Bednar (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Stow). He
shot 148 and tied for seventh place. Junior Brendan Jenkins
(Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) shot 150 and tied for 14th
place.
Ferris State - The Ferris State men’s golf
team was idle this past week and has closed out the fall
season.
Findlay - Michael Schmitmeyer fired a two-round
score of 142 (74, 68), which was 2-under par, to take second at the
Findlay Invitational, which was completed on Sunday, October 9 at
Red Hawk Run Golf Course. As a team, the Oilers finished fourth
with a 602 (311, 291) while Grand Valley State University won the
tournament with a 583 (293, 290). Marcus Hunt tied for fifth with a
147 (76, 71) while Logan Cooke finished 24th with a 152 (82, 70).
Jake North (81, 82 - 163), Jack Kastor (80, 85 - 165), Stephen
Sinchok (80, 83 - 163) and Kirby Doidge (84, 87 - 171) also
competed for Findlay at the event.
Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State won their
second tournament in a row, following up last weekend’s GLIAC
Championship with a title at the Findlay Invite. Senior Travis
Shooks won the individual medal at the tournament after shooting a
four-under 140 with two rounds of 70. Senior Nick Gunthorpe
finished fourth with a 146 (+2, 72-74) while GLIAC Champion Chris
Cunningham placed seventh with a 148 (+4, 75-73). GVSU shot 293 and
290 for a 583 total, outdistancing Tiffin by nine strokes for the
title. The team is now off until the spring season begins.
Lake Erie Storm - After round one was suspended
due to darkness, the Lake Erie College men's golf team had a busy
day on Sunday (Oct. 9) to wrap up the University of Findlay
Invitational. The Storm finished its first round and then went out
and played round two, finishing the 12-team event in ninth place
with a team score of 637. Junior Mike Guarino (Concord,
Ohio/Mentor) was once again the low shooter for LEC, tying for 31st
place individually with a two-round score of 75-78-153.
Seniors Frank Whites III (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) and Matt
Hennessey (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) followed at 81-75-156 and
81-78-159, respectively. Grand valley State University won the team
title, with Laker Travis Shooks claiming individual medalist
honors. The event concluded the Storm's fall season.
Lake Superior State - Team/Individual Notes: Freshman Doug Piesko (Washington, Mich.) tied for 42nd place as LSSU placed 10th among 12 teams at the Findlay Invitational held Oct. 9-10 at Findlay Country Club. Piesko, who shot a 77-79—156, owns the Lakers’ low average of 76.4. Sophomore Justin Helmholdt (Hastings, Mich.), who was 57th, has the Lakers’ next lowest average of 78.6. LSSU concluded the fall portion of its schedule.
Northern Michigan - The Northern Michigan
men’s golf team did not compete this past week and has
concluded the fall season.
Northwood - The Northwood University men's golf
team finished sixth at the Findlay Invitational Sunday afternoon
(October 9). The two-day, 36-hole event was held at the Findlay
Country Club. The course played as a 7,155 yard, par 72. Northwood
shot team scores of 306 and 300 to finish at 606 overall. Grand
Valley State was the overall winner at 583, followed by Tiffin at
592. A total of 12 teams took part in the event. Gilles Medale
(Valence D'Agen, France) led the way for the Timberwolves. He shot
73-74 to tie for fifth overall. Brad Elliott (Sunfield, Mich./Lake
Odessa) tied for 14th at 150 (79-71). Northwood has now completed
the fall portion of their schedule.
Ohio Dominican Panthers - The Panthers sat fourth
after Saturday’s first round of the Findlay Invitational at
Findlay CC with a combined score of 302, but a 317 in
Sunday’s action dropped ODU to an eighth-place finish with a
total of 619, five strokes short of Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) in
seventh. Junior Kevin Hartoin (Cincinnati, OH) led ODU for the
second straight week with an eight-over 152 to finish in a
seven-way tie for 24th. Newcomers Conor O’Hea
(Fr./Middletown, OH), Kyle Burgess (Fr./Lancaster, OH) and Connor
Stookey (Jr./Milford, OH) finished as a pack, tying for 42nd, 45th
and 48th, respectively. O’Hea shot a two-day score of
156, including a career low 73 in round one, while Burgess shot
78-79 (157) and Stookey posted rounds of 75-83 (158). The Panthers
return to the links next spring as it hosts the two-day Harmony
Match Play Challenge at Harmony Golf Preserve in Harmony, Florida,
beginning on March 15.
Saginaw Valley State - The Saginaw Valley State University men’s golf team finished in seventh place after they recorded a 301 (+13) total in the final round of the University of Findlay Invitational. The Cardinals were led by redshirt freshman Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich./Homeschool) who fired a second round three-under par 69 to finish tied for 19th at 151. Sophomore Adam Hansen (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western HS) recorded a 78 (+6) in his second round to finish tied with Skidmore at 151 in 19th place. Freshman Wyatt Drost (Charlevoix, Mich.) posted a two-over par 74 on Sunday to finish tied for 35th at 154. Redshirt freshman Taylor Walker (Clarkston, Mich.) rounded out the Cardinal lineup finishing in 48th place with a 158 total. This tournament concludes the SVSU men’s golf fall schedule for 2011. The Cardinals will resume action on the course when they travel south for their annual Spring Trip in March.
Tiffin - Tiffin University’s men’s
golf team had another strong second round showing, propelling them
from fifth place after round one to second place in the final
standings at the Findlay Invitational. The Dragons posted a total
of 592 with rounds of 303 and 289, trailing only Grand Valley
State’s 583. Three Dragons golfers showed marked improvement
from round one to round two. Blake DeBruyn was the overall leader,
shooting a 76 in round one but knocking 9 strokes off his score
with a second-round 67 for 143 (good for third place overall and
just three strokes from medalist honors). Justin Epure was seventh
overall, shooting 76 in round one and improving to 72 in round two
for 148. Jon Klein also had a dramatic improvement on day two,
shooting 82 to start but bettering it by 9 strokes (73) to finish
with 155. Dillon Klein (74-77-151) and Tyler Maranville (77-78-155)
also showed consistency, as the top five Dragons golfers were
separated by 12 total strokes. Tiffin’s total of 289 in round
two was also the top score of any team at the invite, nipping Grand
Valley State (290) by one stroke. Other individual golfers for TU
included Corey Martinez (76-76-152), Ryan Courtright (80-73-153),
Preston Robinette (78-82-160), and Phil Patten (79-85-164).
Wayne State - In its final tournament of the fall
season, Wayne State placed third at the Findlay Invitational, which
concluded Sunday at Findlay Country Club. The Warriors turned
in scores of 296 on Saturday and 301 on Sunday, finishing 14
strokes off the pace set by Grand Valley State (583). Three
players in WSU’s starting five placed in the top 15 including
Todd Spangler who tied for seventh place (73-75—148).
Reid Dean tied for 11th (149) and Josh Mitroka tied for 14th
(150). Wayne State will resume its 2011-12 season in
March.
