BAY CITY, Mich. - Ferris State University sophomore Trent Davison (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's golf "Athlete of the Week" after  finishing in first place at The Jewel held at Cherry Blossom Golf Club in Georgetown, Kentucky over the weekend.

Ferris State University sophomore Trent Davison claimed medallist honors at The Jewell played at Cherry Blossom Golf Club last weekend in Georgetown, Ky. He posted scores of 71 and 70 for a three-under total of 141 in the tournament, helping the Bulldogs to a fourth-place finish among 25 NCAA Division II teams. The Bulldogs fired identical rounds of 295 on Saturday and Sunday and finished only six strokes out of first place in the regional competition.

Ashland - The Ashland University men's golf team placed ninth out of 25 teams at the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament #1, held Mar. 31-Apr. 1, at the Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Ky... Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky led the field. Both teams shot 584 (+8) and Indianapolis won the championship in a one-hole playoff.  Grand Valley State (588/+12) was third and Ferris State (590/+14) was fourth.  Bellarmine (592/+16) was fifth... AU's team score was 599 (+23)... Junior Brendan Jenkins (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) had Ashland's top finish. He shot 145 (+1) and tied for ninth place.  Trent Davison of Ferris State was the medalist. He shot 141 (-3).  AU senior Jay Overy (Grafton, Ohio/Midview) tied for 18th.  He shot 147 (+3)... Ashland will play another NCAA regional tournament this coming weekend (Apr. 7-8) in Noblesville, Ind.

 


Ferris State - The Ferris State University men's golf team placed fourth overall of 25 competing teams in The Jewell played at Cherry Blossom Golf Club this weekend (March 31-April 1) in Georgetown, Ky... The Bulldogs fired identical rounds of 295 on Saturday and Sunday and finished only six strokes out of first place in the regional competition... Northern Kentucky won a playoff for the team title after tying Indianapolis for first place.  Both schools shot scores of 584 and were followed by Grand Valley State in third place with a 588 total... FSU's Trent Davison won individual medalist honors as he posted scores of 71 and 70 for a three-under total of 141 in the tournament... The Bulldogs' Garrett Simons tied for ninth place overall with a 145 on rounds of 72 and 73, which put him at one-over for the event... Kyle Wittenbach tied for 24th place at 148 (76, 72) with Richard Weisenberger placing tied for 80th in the field at 156 (76, 80)... Next up for the Bulldogs is the NCAA-II Region Tourney III, which will take place April 8-9 at Noblesville, Ind.

 


Findlay - The University of Findlay men's golf team placed 19th out of 25 teams at the Jewell, which was hosted at the Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Ky.  The Oilers shot a two-round score of 612 (302, 310) at the event, which concluded on Sunday, April 1... Marcus Hunt tied for 29th to lead the Oilers as he carded a 149 (76, 73)... Jack Kastor (73, 79 – 152), Michael Schmitmeyer (74, 78 – 152), Jake North (79, 80 – 159) and Logan Cooke (79, 83 – 162) also competed for Findlay at the event... The Oilers will be back out on the course again on April 8-9 at the third NCAA regional of the year in Indianapolis, Ind.




Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State took home a third-place finish at The Jewell hosted in Georgetown, Ky. at Cherry Blossom G.C...The Lakers shot rounds of 292 (+4) and 296 (+8) to finish with a 588 (+12) total, only four strokes behind the leaders...Senior Travis Shooks (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and sophomore Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.) shot matching 146’s (+2) for the tournament to tie for 16th place...Shooks went 75-71, while Cunningham notched consecutive rounds of 73...The Lakers will travel to Noblesville, Ind. this weekend to take part in Great Lakes Regional #3 hosted at Purgatory G.C. (Apr. 8-9).

 

 

Lake Erie Storm - The LEC men's golf team kicked off its Spring competition Saturday and Sunday at the two-day The Jewell tournament hosted by Northern Kentucky University in Georgetown, Ky... The Storm shot 319 as a team on day one at the par-72 Cherry Blossom Golf Club.  They posted a 326 in the final round for a two-day score of 645. The University of Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky shared the top spot at the event while Lake Erie placed 25th of 25 teams... Junior Mike Guarino (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) was the Storm's top competitor with rounds of 74-76-150 good for tied for 35th place.  Senior Frank Whites III (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) placed 95th with consistent rounds of 80-78-158 while senior Mike Hennessey (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) started strong on day one but faltered on day two with a score of 78-89-167.  Junior Troy Hunter (Aurora, Ohio/Crestwood) and sophomore Troy Walters (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) rounded out the Lake Erie effort with scores of 87-83-170 and 87-89-176 respectively... LECe returns to action next weekend at the third and final NCAA Regional of the year at the Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind.

 


Lake Superior State -  Junior Sean Stubbs (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) shot a 1-over 72-73—145 to tie for ninth place and lead LSSU to a tie for 15th at the NCAA Regional #2 played at The Jewell. Stubbs has a season scoring average of 78.4. Freshman Doug Piesko (Washington, Mich.), who owns the Lakers’ low average of 76.2, tied for 41st with a 75-76—151. LSSU competes in Regional #3 in Indianapolis on April 15-16.

 

 

 

 

 

Northern Michigan University Northern Michigan - The Northern Michigan University golf team opened the spring portion of the season with The Jewel, a two-day tournament at the Cherry Blossom Golf Club. The Wildcats finished 22nd with a team score of 618... Mike Murphy was tied for 18th overall with a three-over 147. He shot 75 on Saturday (March 31) and bounced back with an even par 72 on Sunday (April 1)... Jared Reid was tied for 75 shooting 155. He scored 74 on Friday and 81 on Saturday... Ayrton Mantha was one shot back with a 156, tying him for 80th. He shot an 80 on day one and a 76 on day two... Colten Thewis shot a 160 (78-82) and Adam Huss a 179 (92-87)... The University of Indianapolis won the meet an eight-over 584. The Greyhounds defeated Northern Kentucky in a one-hole playoff... Trent Davison of Ferris State was the medalist with a three-under 141... The ‘Cats travel to Indianapolis, Ind. next weekend (April 7-9).

 



Northwood - The NU men’s golf team placed fifteenth out 25 teams at the NCAA Regional #2 Sunday afternoon (April 1)... The two-day, 36-hole event was held at the Cherry Blossom Golf Club.  The 7,007 yard course played as a par 72... Northwood shot team scores of 303-303 to finish at 606 overall, good for a tie for fifteenth overall.  Indianapolis was tied for the overall winner at 584 (285-299), with Northern Kentucky also at 584 (287-297)... Brad Elliott (Sunfield, Mich.) led the way for the Timberwolves finishing at 149 (73-76) and tied for 29th place out of 125 players.  Nick Prokop (Novi, Mich.) and Gilles Medale (Valence D’Agen, France) each finished at 151 and tied for 41st... Northwood will compete at the Great Lakes Regional on April 9th. 

 

 

Ohio Dominican Panthers -  ODU improved upon its first round total on Sunday at The Jewell with a second round 303 to sure up 18th place at the two day invite at Cherry Blossom GC in Georgetown, Kentucky. With a weekend total of 610 (307-303), the Panthers edged Findlay by two strokes for 18th position and were just ten shots back of a top-10 finish in a field comprised solely of GLIAC and GLVC squads. ODU also bettered conference foes Northern Michigan (618) and Lake Erie (645) with the top-20 placing. Freshman Eric Brown (Batavia, OH) worked his way around the 7007-yard, par 72 course to a six-over par 150 (75-75), finishing in a tie for 35th to lead the Panthers. Senior Gary Wright Jr. (Warsaw, OH) was just one shot back in a tie for 41st with rounds of 77 and 74, while junior Kevin Hartoin (Cincinnati, OH) recorded a 152 (75-77) to earn a nine-way tie for ninth. ODU has another two-week layoff for Easter weekend before returning to the fairways for the two-day Great Lakes Regional No. 3 at Purgatory GC in Noblesville, Indiana, beginning on Sunday, March 15.

 

 

Saginaw Valley State University

Saginaw Valley State - The Saginaw Valley State University men’s golf team fired a second round 302 in the final round of “The Jewell” Great Lakes Regional #2 and finished in sixth place. SVSU’s two-day total of 593 (+17) was nine shots behind the University of Indianapolis who won the tournament with a 584 (+8). The Cardinals were led by Micah Skidmore who posted his second straight one-under-par round of 71 and finished in a tie for 2nd place at a two-under-par 142 total. Wyatt Drost posted his second consecutive round two-over-par round of 74 to finish in a tie for 24th place at 148 (+4). Dustin Vogl followed up his even-par first round with a seven-over-par 79 to drop back into a tie for 41st position at 151 (+7). The Saginaw Valley golfers will be back in action when they compete in the Great Lakes Regional #3 at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana next Saturday and Sunday (Apr. 7-8).



Tiffin - TU played well at The Jewell played at Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Ky. March 31-April 1, finishing 7th of 25 teams and only 12 strokes out of first place. Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky tied for first with a two-round total of 584, while the Dragons shot 596... The Dragons showed consistency, shooting 299 in round one and improving slightly to 297 on day two. Blake DeBruyn was the top golfer for TU, opening with 72 and finishing with 75 for a 147 total... Jon Klein was right behind, opening with 78 but improving significantly on day two in shooting 71 for 149... Jason Crow also improved from round one to round two, shooting 79-72 for 151, while Tyler Maranville finished with 153 (74-79). Dillon Klein brought up the back end with a 154 (75-79).

 

 

Wayne State University Wayne State - Wayne State tied for 12th place at the second Great Lakes Regional of the season over the weekend.  The Warriors shot 298 on Saturday and 306 on Sunday at Cherry Blossom, matching UMSL with a team score of 604.  Finishing in a tie for second place was Alex LaSerra, who shot 71 each round and was one stroke off the lead.  Austin Hill shot an even-par 72 in the opening round and tied for 35th overall (72-78—150).  Wayne State will compete at the third and final regional tournament next weekend at Purgatory in Noblesville, Ind.
