Wayne State’s Eric Johnson Earns GLIAC  Men’s Golf “Athlete of The Year” Award

BAY CITY, Mich. — Wayne State University senior Eric Johnson (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette) has earned the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Golf  "Athlete of the Year" award as announced by the conference office. Johnson posted the lowest stroke average among the GLIAC's men's golfers this season. Wayne State University rookie Alex LeSerra (Jackson, Mich. / Napoleon)  was named the conference's "Freshman of the Year" while Wayne State University head coach Mike Horn was tabbed as the GLIAC "Coach of the Year".

Johnson was named GLIAC "Athlete of the Year" following a season that included three top five finishes and a stroke average of 74.58. His best finish was a second place finish on Sept. 15-16 at the Tiffin Kyle Ryman Memorial. He shot a low round of 68 in the opening round of  the first NCAA Regional of the season. Joshon was named GLIAC Men's Golf "Athlete of the Week" on April 9 following a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Regional #2 in Georgetown, Ky.

LaSerra was named GLIAC Men's Golf "Freshman of the Year" after a debut season that included two individual victories and four other top ten finishes. On the season he carried a stroke average of 73.65 with a low round of 65 at the Motor City Invitational, where he finished second. He was named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence team. LaSerra was the GLIAC Men's Golf "Athlete of the Week" on March 26 following his first career individual victory at the SVSU Invitational, where he shot a 107 (70, 37). LaSerra collected another GLIAC "Athlete of the Week" award on April 22 following his win at the GLIAC Spring Invite where he shot a 143 (71, 72).

Wayne State's head men's golf coach Mike Horn collected his fourth GLIAC "Coach of the Year" honors. He was the 2007 GCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year, and is in his 12th season at Wayne State University.  He has led the Warriors to the NCAA Super Regional in nine of the last 10 years, including seven straight. Horn guided the 2010-11 squad to a second-place finish at the GLIAC Championship and a seventh-place in the NCAA  Super Regional.  Eric Johnson went on to represent WSU at the NCAA D-II Championship. Wayne State qualified for the first time in program history as a team for the NCAA  Championship in 2009 after winning the Super Regional title under Horn's guidance.

Joining Johnson and LeSerra on the 2013 All-GLIAC First Team are: senior Trent Davison of Ferris State University; junior Chris Cunningham; sophomore Jack Rider and junior Joel Siegel  of  Grand Valley State.  

The 2013 All-GLIAC Second Team includes: senior  Brendan Jenkins of  Ashland;  freshman  Ben Cook and junior Luke Trocchio  of  Ferris State; junior Jon Clark  of  Malone; senior Jon Klein  and sophomore Tyler Maranville  of  Tiffin.
