BAY CITY, Mich. - Tiffin University senior forward Ashton Campbell (Luton, England) earned GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after leading the Dragons to an a pair of wins to open the 2011 campaign.

Tiffin University senior forward Ashton Campbell had a hand in seven of the Dragons’ eight goals in their opening weekend. He tallyied two goals and an assist in Tiffin’s 3-2 win over Bellarmine (Ky.), while finishing the weekend with a hat trick and another assist in a 5-0 shutout of Seton Hill (Pa.). Campbell is now just two points shy of 100 career collegiate points.

Ashland
Eagles (1-1-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC)
The Eagles split a pair of home games to open the season last week. Ashland, ranked 20th in the nation, beat Slippery Rock, 1-0, on Thursday before falling to top-ranked, defending national champion Northern Kentucky on Sunday, 2-1. Junior Jamie Dollar (Perrysburg, Ohio) scored both goals for the Eagles off set pieces. On Thursday, Dollar’s goal snapped a scoreless tie in the 76th minute. The Eagles allowed just 4.7 shots on goal last season and allowed just one on Thursday against The Rock. On Sunday, the Eagles and Norse were scoreless at halftime, but the Norse struck first in the 50th minute. The Eagles tied the game on Dollar’s free kick that deflected into the net off the Norse’s wall in the 71st minute. NKU delivered the game-winner in the 87th minute to send the Eagles to just their second loss in the two-year history of Ferguson Field. Ashland hosts Tiffin and Findlay on Friday and Sunday, respectively, to open GLIAC play.
Findlay Oilers (0-2-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC)
Top ranked Northern Kentucky University defeated The University of Findlay men's soccer team by a score of 4-0 on Thursday at DeHaven Field... The Norse scored one goal in the first half and added three more in the second as they out-shot the Oilers by a 26-3 margin... Sophomore Alex Jurek took the loss after surrendering four goals in the net for Findlay. Jurek also made ten saves as he fell to 0-1 on the year... UF was defeated 6-0 by Bellarmine at home on Sunday... The Knights put themselves on the board in the 35th minute, then added another before half. After the break, Bellarmine continued to pour it on adding four more goals.Findlay was out shot 20-3 in the game... The loss gives the Oilers a record of 0-2 on the season with a chance to get their first win at Lake Erie College on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in Painesville, Ohio.
Lake Erie Storm (1-1-0, 0-0-0
GLIAC)
Lake Erie College went 1-1 in the
first week of the season, picking up a win in the first game for
Head Coach Davie Carmichael. In the first half in the 3-1 win
over Wheeling Jesuit, the Storm was spurred on by newcomers as
junior transfer Randy Danso started the scoring in the 24th
minute. Freshman Stefan Martin made the score 2-0 off a
corner kick from junior transfer Jake Shelton late in the first
half and sophomore Nathan Bias scored the clinching goal in the
77th minute. Bias would score his second goal of the season
Saturday in a 4-1 loss to Malone.
Northwood Timberwolves (2-0-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC)
Northwood got its 2011 season off to a strong start, winning a pair of non-GLIAC games … the Timberwolves defeated Urbana 4-1 before going on the road to defeat Lewis 3-0 … NU controlled the play in both games, out-shooting their opponents 32-13 while holding an 11-8 advantage in corner kicks … Northwood featured strong balance offensively – five different players scored goals while 10 different players registered a point … senior Keith Lough (Edinburgh, Scotland) scored the Timberwolves first two goals of the season and then registered an assist at Lewis to finish with a team-high five points …. Shaun Rydzewski (Novi, Mich.) led the way for the Timberwolves at Lewis, netting a pair of goals … keeper Matt Renouf (Romsey, England) allowed just one goal in 180 minutes to start the year 2-0 … NU has this week off – they will return to action September 16 versus Findlay.
Ohio Dominican Panthers (1-0-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC)
ODU won its fifth straight season opener with a convincing 3-1 victory over visiting Indianapolis on Friday evening. After a scoreless first half, the Panthers matched their scoring output of their previous two meetings with the Greyhounds with three second half strikes. Junior Casey Weddle (Cincinnati, OH) opened the 2011 scoring for ODU with a goal in the 52nd minute, gathering a loose ball in front of the net off a saved header for the 1-0 advantage. Just under three minutes later, he found teammate Justin Wheeler (Jr./Gahanna, OH) with a perfect pass ahead through the middle into the box for the eventual game-winner. Freshman Frazer Fernandes (Gahanna, OH) notched his first collegiate score at the 78:05 mark, ripping a shot from the close left wing, eight yards out to the far side lower 90. UIndy finally broke through in the 84th minute with a header off a perfectly placed cross from the near side end line for the final tally. Sophomore keeper Dean Dziewit (Waterford, MI) collected his first collegiate win with a game-high four saves.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (2-0-0, 0-0-0
GLIAC)
SVSU got off to a fast start in
2011 with two big victories over the weekend. The Cardinals road
trip started off with a win over the talented Lewis University
squad on Thursday in overtime, 1-0. Saginaw Valley concluded its
weekend trip Sunday with a 3-1 victory at St. Joseph’s
(Ind.). Sophomore Zach Walega (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) scored
game-winning goals in both contests for SVSU over the weekend.
Junior goalkeeper Jason Wise earned the first two wins of his
collegiate career, including a shutout against Lewis in overtime.
The Cardinals go on the road Sept. 9 to battle Marygrove before
opening GLIAC play Sept. 11 at Ohio Dominican.
Tiffin Dragons (2-0-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC)
In TU’s win over Bellarmine,
Emmanuel Adjei took a pass from Campbell in front of the net and
drilled it home to open scoring in the 9th minute. Campbell than
handled a pass from Michael O’Neill and knocked it over the
goalkeeper’s head in the 16th minute to make it 2-0 at the
half. O’Neill got his second assist of the day, feeding
Campbell a pass that he drilled in from 30 yards out in the 52nd
minute…Against the Griffins, TU got a first half goal when
Edison Benda took a long throw in from Adam Fussell that was
flicked across by Ashton Campbell and drove it into the back of the
net in the 8th minute. Ashton Campbell stepped up and led the team
after halftime, tallying a hat trick in the final half. He got his
first goal of the day when Pierre De Pauw sent a pass up the
middle, putting Campbell in a breakaway situation in the 49th
minute. After Michael O’Neill made it 3-0 after drilling home
an unassisted free kick in the 51st minute, Campbell was taken down
in the box, setting up a penalty kick goal in the 53rd minute. His
final goal came in the 73rd minute when Daniel Agosta hit him with
a pass up the middle. Campbell’s three goals and one assist
on the day gave him 5 goals and 2 assists just two games into the
young season. It also leaves him just 2 points shy of 100 career
collegiate points…Jeremy Ashley improved to 2-0 in goal,
posting the shutout against Seton Hill while making 5 saves.
