BAY CITY, Mich. - Tiffin University sophomore defender Ryan Johnstone (Castle Hill, Australia) earned GLIAC Men's Soccer "Athlete of the Week" honors after leading the Dragons to a 2-0 week with wins over Malone University and the University of Findlay.

Sophomore defender Ryan Johnstone helped lead a Tiffin University defense that posted two shutout victories in the Dragons’ 2-0 week. TU opened their week with a 1-0 win over Malone and then posted a 1-0 victory of GLIAC opponent Findlay. Tiffin’s defense held Findlay to just 5 total shots and only one shot on goal over 90 minutes. For the season, Johnstone has helped Tiffin post six shutouts through nine games.

Ashland
Eagles
The Eagles dropped a pair of road
GLIAC games last weekend, falling to Northwood, 3-0, and to Saginaw
Valley State, 2-1. Against the Timberwolves, the Eagles put all
eight of their shots on goal, but could not cash in. The Eagles
fell behind the Cardinals late in the first half, but rallied to
tie the score in the 53rd minute on a goal by senior Kenny Hewitt.
Junior Mitch Deyhle was credited with the assist on the play. Just
49 seconds later, the Cardinals took the lead on a goal by Laurence
Paterson. The Cardinals out-shot the Eagles, 14-13, in the game.
Junior goalkeeper Justin Nolan recorded 11 saves in the two games.
AU travels to Lake Erie on Sunday for a GLIAC game.
Findlay Oilers
The University of Findlay men's
soccer team was defeated by Tiffin University 1-0 on Sunday, Oct. 2
in Findlay, Ohio. Goal keeper Matthew Brooks recorded six saves.
The loss gives the Oilers a 1-7-1 record on the year with a 0-5-1
mark in GLIAC play. Findlay will be back in action on Wednesday,
Oct. 5 when the travel to Tiffin to take on the Dragons.
Lake Erie Storm
Lake Erie College went 0-1-2 on the
week, earning a pair of road ties against the top two teams in the
GLIAC, Northwood and Saginaw Valley. The Storm also fell,
2-1, to Ohio Valley in non-conference play Monday as sophomore
transfer James Grogan (Leeds, England/Averett University) scored
his second goal as a member of the Storm with fellow transfer
Stewart Bath (Billingham, England/Averett University) on the
assist. Against Saginaw Valley, Lake Erie got an early goal
by junior Randy Danso (Toronto, Canada/North Count Community
College) from senior defender Kyle Roesch (Chardon,
Ohio/Chardon)and it was enough to sustain a 1-1 tie. The
Sunday showdown against Northwood was a physical match with 11
cards and one ejection on each side. In the 74th minute Lake
Erie converted a free kick as sophomore Danny Eborall (Sheffield,
England/Averett University) scored his fourth goal of the season on
a header off the free kick by Bath, his fourth assist of the
season. Lake Erie has just one match this week, a Sunday
showdown against Ashland University.
Northwood Timberwolves
Northwood went 1-1-1 last week,
falling in double overtime at Ohio Dominican before defeating
Ashland and playing Lake Erie to a draw … the Timberwolves
are now 6-1-1, 4-1-1 in the GLIAC … freshman D.J. Evans
(Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) led the way for the Timberwolves for the
week, netting two goals … he scored the opening goal against
both Ashland and Lake Erie … Keith Lough (Edinburgh,
Scotland) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season at Ohio
Dominican … Lough also leads the team in assists with three
… senior keeper Matt Renouf (Romsey, England) had a strong
week as well, finishing with a 0.88 goals against average …
he had a .812 save percentage for the week … Northwood will
host Ohio Dominican Friday (October 7) at 4:30 p.m.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
The Panthers went 1-0-1 at home
this past week, knocking off its second ranked opponent, No. 22
Northwood (Mich.), 2-1 in double OT on Tuesday, before falling to
Charleston (W. Va.) 2-1 in a non-conference affair on Friday
evening. The Timberwolves took the lead late in the first half, but
junior Colby Catlett (Hilliard, OH) found the equalizer at the
65:18 mark and later assisted with junior Andrew Edler (Hilliard,
OH) on Justin Wheeler’s (Jr./Gahanna, OH) game-winner in the
second OT. It was the fourth OT of the year for ODU, just one shy
of the school record, and first overtime win this season after
going 0-2-1 in the first three. In Friday’s action, senior
Felix Darko (Reynoldsburg, OH) matched Catlett with his
co-team-leading fourth score in the 33rd minute to tie the game at
1-1, but the Golden Eagles put together a breakaway score midway
through the second to hand the Panthers their first loss in
regulation on the year. Darko’s score moved him into sixth on
ODU’s career goals list and one point shy of fifth place on
the career points chart. The Panthers battle Saginaw Valley State
(Mich.) at 2 p.m. at home this Tuesday, Oct. 4 and follow with a
three-game road swing, beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7
with a bout against current GLIAC leader, Northwood.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University
men’s soccer team tied with Lake Erie, 1-1 in double overtime
and defeated Ashland 2-1 this week. The Storm took an early
advantage at the 6:48 mark going up 1-0 over the Cardinals and
would carry the lead into the second half of the contest. Sophomore
Lachlan Savage (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth HS) found the back of the
net just 37 seconds into the second half off a pass from Zach
Walega (Saline, Mich.) knotting the score at 1-1.Neither team would
be able to capitilize on any of their shots through the two
overtimes ending the game in a 1-1 tie. The Cardinals were the
first to score late in the first half when Tyler Channell (Troy,
Mich. / Troy Athens HS) found the back of the net off a pass from
Conor Reaume (Troy, Mich.). Saginaw Valley would take their 1-0
lead over the Eagles into halftime. Ashland came out strong in the
second half knotting the score at 1-1. The Cardinals wasted no time
answering back scoring the final goal of the contest less than a
minute later on a Laurence Paterson(Flint, Mich. / Kearsley HS)
goal. Goaltender Jason Wise (Troy, Mich.) saved five of the six
shots he faced in the contest. Saginaw Valley will play the
postponed game against Ohio Dominican on Tuesday (Oct. 4) at 2:30
pm, than return home Friday (Oct. 7) to take on Rochester College
at 4:30 pm and Sunday (Oct. 9) to take on Ohio Dominican.
Tiffin Dragons
A physical defensive game was decided by a breakaway goal early in the second half, as Ashton Campbell took a through ball and knocked it home to give Tiffin University a 1-0 win over visiting Malone University. Campell took a two-touch pass from Michael O’Neill and Edison Benda in the 55th minute and put it in for the gamewinner…Jeremy Ashley had another strong game in goal, working 90 minutes and making 5 saves in the shutout…Tiffin University got a first half goal from Nick Kutch and the defense made it stand up, as TU beat Findlay 1-0 on the road. Kutch scored on a pass from Adam Fussell in the 23rd minute, sending it home from 20 yards out. The Dragons’ defense then settled in, holding the Oilers to just 5 shots, 1 in the second half. Overall TU outshot Findlay 19-5 and allowed only one shot on goal, which Jeremy Ashley saved while posting his sixth shutout over 90 minutes. Tiffin also kept up the offensive pressure after halftime, outshooting Findlay 14-1 over the final 45 minutes.
