Panthers Win Debut in Convincing Fashion

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team captured a 5-1 win on Thursday afternoon over Missouri-St. Louis in their season opener and first taste of NCAA Division II action. The Panthers were not fazed by the new jump as they got a hat trick from junior Brogan Shrimptonand one goal apiece from Stephen Carroll and Jovanni Garcia. Shrimpton was a formidable scorer last season and picked up where he left off for the Panthers. Garcia notched a goal in his first match at DU and Carroll struck off a free kick as Davenport led 4-1 at halftime and increased their lead slightly in the second half.

Shrimpton scored 6:02 into the match and then Garcia followed just 1:30 later to give DU a 2-0 cushion. Shrimpton was also credited with an assist on Garcia's goal. Shrimpton found the back of the net again at 19:14 with an assist from Daire O'Riordan which gave DU a very comfortable lead. Carroll converted his free kick from about 30 yards into the top left corner and just over 20 minutes into the match it was 4-0. Nick Harper scored the lone goal for UMSL at 30:18 on a shot that eluded senior goalkeeper Aaron Orbanabove his left shoulder from around 25 yards. Shrimpton capped off the big day at 67:18 as he shot from close range and the keeper made a great save. He followed his own rebound with a light header that just crossed the goal line for a 5-1 advantage.

Davenport outshot the Tritons, 17-7, including 13-4 on goal for the match. Orban finished with three saves in net. The team introduced four new starters to the lineup this afternoon and they all performed admirably.
