Jenison, Mich.-- Wayne State sweeps year end men's swimming and diving awards.  Sean Smith (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year, Jesper Akesson (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskola) was tabbed with Freshman of the Year honors and Coach of the Year accolades went to Sean Peters.

Senior Sean Smith, the second WSU male swimmer to earn Athlete of the Year honors (David Lutz, 2005), took two individual titles at the GLIAC Championships, winning the 200-yard backstroke (1:48.92) for the second straight year and the 100-yard back (48.61) for the first time, setting conference records in both events.  Smith also led off the 200-yard (1:29.80) and 400-yard medley relays (3:18.38)  , both of which came in first place and established school and GLIAC records.

Freshman Jesper Akesson won three individual events at the conference meet.  He took first place in the 50-yard freestyle (20.73), set a school record in the 100-yard freestyle (45.06), and broke the GLIAC record in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.33).  He also joined two first-place relays - the 400-yard  freestyle (2:59.65) and 200-yard medley relays (1:29.80), both of which established new WSU and GLIAC standards.

Sean Peters earned his seventh career GLIAC Men's Coach of the Year award, guiding the Warriors to their fifth GLIAC Championship in the last seven years.  Wayne State accumulated a school-record 900 points and finished 65.5 points ahead of second-place Grand Valley State after trailing by 17.5 through day three. The Warrior men won 18 of the 21 events during the four-day period while setting 11 school records and 11 GLIAC records.
