JENISON, Mich. - Wayne State University claimed both the men's and women's 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) swimming & diving championships on Saturday (Feb. 12) at the Jenison Aquatics Center in Jeninson, Mich.
On the women's side, Wayne State outdistanced second place, Grand Valley State University, 868-735, earning the team's fifth GLIAC title in the last six years. Ashland University placed third with 563 points, while the University of Indianapolis finished fourth wiht 419 points. (See below for complete final standings)
For the men, Wayne State posted a 124-point victory over Grand Valley State (852-728). The title is the sixth in the last nine years for the Warriors. Ashland finished third with 714 points, followed by Indianapolis in fourth with 578 points. (See below for complete final standings)
This marked the third time that the Warriors have claimed both GLIAC men's and women's titles in the same year (2006, 2007).
Wayne State head coach Sean Peters was named the GLIAC "Dewey Newsome - Coach of the Year" for both the men and the women, the award named in honor of former Grand Valley State University men's and women's head coach, Dewey Newsome. Men's Diver of the Year: Jeff Grant, Wayne State University (Belleville, Mich./Belleville)
Women's Swimmer of the Year: Maura Donahue, University of Indianapolis (Milan, Mich./Milan)
Men's Swimmer of the Year: Andrey Seryy, Wayne State University (Saint-Petersburg, Russia/Olympic Reserve School)
