GVSU's Caitlyn Madsen and Gianni Ferrero  Named GLIAC Women's and Men's Swimming & Diving "Athletes of the Week," respectively

BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University senior Caitlyn Madsen (West Chicago, Ill./Community) and Grand Valley State University sophomore Gianni Ferrero (Idstein, Germany) were named Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's and Men's Swimming & Diving "Athletes of the Week," respectively, for their efforts last weekend.

GLIAC Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week:

Caitlyn Madsen - Grand Valley State University
Senior  - West Chicago, Ill./Community

Grand Valley State senior Caitlyn Madsen (West Chicago, Ill./Community) has been named the GLIAC Women's Swimmer of the Week. Madsen set three GVSU individual pool records and was part of a 400 medley relay team that also set a pool record as the Lakers claimed a 191-90 victory over Lewis last Saturday.  Madsen swam the butterfly leg of the Lakers' 400 medley relay team that touched in a pool-record and NCAA B cut time of 3:51.50, nearly three seconds better than the previous pool record. Caitlyn bettered the 200 fly pool record by over a second and hit a B cut when she touched the wall in 2:05.37, followed by the 100 fly pool record and another B cut time of 57.01. Madsen closed the record-setting day with her third individual pool record in the toughest event in swimming, the 400 IM. She touched the wall in 4:34.38, nearly a second ahead of the previous GVSU pool record (4:35.37). 

Madsen, a 13-time All-American, will lead the 15th-ranked Laker women's swimming and diving team to a dual meet at Michigan State Friday (Nov. 8) at 5 p.m.

 



 

GLIAC Men's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week:

Gianni Ferrero- Grand Valley State University
Sophomore - Idstein, Germany

Grand Valley State sophomore Gianni Ferrero (Idstein, Germany) has been named the GLIAC Men's Swimmer of the Week. Ferrero set one individual pool and varsity record and was a part of two Laker relays that set GVSU pool records as Grand Valley State claimed a 186-100 win over Lewis. Ferrero broke his own pool record and David Hayhow's varsity record, while also hitting the NCAA B cut in the 500 free when he touched the wall in 4:28.98. Ferrero swam the opening leg in the record-setting 400 medley relay team that finished nearly three seconds (3:22.78) ahead of the previous mark. Gianni also swam the opening leg of the 400 free relay that touched the wall in a pool-record time of 3:05.79, while also recording a first-place finish in the 200 free (1:39.70). 

Ferrero, a 6-time All-American as a freshman a year ago, will lead the fifth-ranked Lakers to Michigan State for a 5 pm dual meet in East Lansing Friday (Nov. 8).
