Northwood’s Peter Kazianschuetz Named 2009 GLIAC Men’s Tennis “Player of the Year”

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Northwood University sophomore Peter Kazianschuetz was named the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's tennis "Player of the Year" by the league's head coaches in all-conference balloting.

The coaches named University of Findlay rookie Kyle Collette the conference's "Freshman of the Year," while Zane Colestock, head coach of the Timberwolves' men's tennis team, was tabbed the "Coach of the Year."

Kazianschuetz has earned GLIAC "Player of the Year" honors for the second straight season, posting a combined record of 16-1 against GLIAC opponents this spring.   He went 5-1 in GLIAC No.1 singles play and 7-0 in conference doubles matches.  Kazianschuetz then went 4-0 at the GLIAC Tournament over the weekend while leading the Timberwolves to their 15th straight conference championship.   He is currently ranked nationally in both singles (36) and doubles (16) with partner Frederic Schoelzel.  For his collegiate career, Kazianschuetz has a combined record of 43-12 (.782).

Collette played No.1 singles for the Oilers the entire season and posted a 17-2 record. He recorded a 12-8 record in doubles competition as well. His overall No.1 singles record on the season was the top mark among GLIAC players while his overall record ranked second in the conference.

Colestock has now been named GLIAC Men's Tennis "Coach of the Year" 10 times in his illustrious career. He guided Northwood to its 15th straight GLIAC Championship this weekend after Northwood posted three 5-0 sweeps to claim the title. Against GLIAC opponents in the regular season and in the conference tournament, Northwood went 44-2 in singles (.956) and 26-1 in doubles (.962). 

Joining Kazianschuetz and Collette on the 2009 All-GLIAC first team are: senior Bertrand Vigouroux and junior Frederic Schoelzel of Northwood ; senior Lewis DeGeneault of Ferris State University; senior Tony Dang of Grand Valley State University; freshman Razvan Mag of Lake Superior State University; and sophomore Johan Maubacq and freshman Bertrand Moulin of Wayne State University.

The 2009 All-GLIAC second team includes: junior Ahmet Kursad-Demir and freshman Jack Swan of Ferris State; freshman Marc Roesslein and sophomore Philipp Claus of Grand Valley State; senior Travis Whipple of Findlay; senior Oliver Brignoli, junior Maxime Dutors, and sophomore Alex Minicozzi of Northwood; and senior Brett Girard of Michigan Technological University.
