Northwood's Jean Menard Named GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Northwood University sophomore Jean Menard (Ambroise, France) earned GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week" honors after a 17-1 starting the season with a 17-1 combined record in singles and doubles.

Jean Menard has gone 17-1 combined in singles and doubles to open the season. Menard has gone 9-0 in singles (3-0 at No. 1, 6-0 at No. 2) and 8-1 in doubles (2-0 at No. 1, 6-1 at No. 2).  In GLIAC matches, Menard has gone 10-0 overall, posting perfect 5-0 records at both singles and doubles. Northwood is currently 8-0 overall, 5-0 in the GLIAC on the season.

Ferris State Bulldogs

The Ferris State University men's tennis team improved to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with an 8-1 win over Findlay on Saturday (March 24) in Findlay, Ohio. The Bulldogs next return home to host rival Northwood in league action on Wednesday, March 28, with match time set for 4 p.m. (ET) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids.




Findlay Oilers

The University of Findlay men's tennis team has a 6-4 record on the season with a 1-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Oilers will hit the court again on March 30 when they travel to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to face Lake Superior State University.



 

Grand Valley State Lakers

The Lakers are currently 7-9 on the season, but more importantly 4-1 in GLIAC play.  They have faced some tough competition in the opening months of the season against nationally-ranked Division I and Division II opponents. Over the weekend, GVSU picked up two convincing wins at Ohio schools Findlay (7-2) and Tiffin (6-3).  Grand Valley State is currently on a four-game winning streak in conference play and looks to extend it against Lake Erie and Ohio Dominican beginning on Friday.



 

Lake Erie Storm

The Storm are currently 0-7 overall and 0-4 in GLIAC play. LEC returns to conference action this weekend, starting Friday, March 30, at Grand Valley State University.

 

 

 

 Lake Superior State Lakers

The Lakers are blanked for the second time this season by a GLIAC opponent 9-0, after playing #8 regional ranked Wayne State March 24. The Lakers No. 2 doubles duo of Travis Toth (St. Johns, Mich.) and Ryne DuShane (Holland, Mich.) played the lone LSSU win during the road matches at Northwood and Wayne State. Toth and DuShane are 4-7 overall at No. 2 doubles and 1-3 in GLIAC play.



 

Michigan Tech Huskies

Michigan Tech has played the top four teams in the GLIAC in its first four league matches … Senior Anders Sandholm (Duluth, Minn./East) leads the Huskies with eight singles victories. Six of those wins have come at No. 1 singles, where he has posted a 2-2 mark in conference matches … Because of injuries, Tech has used eight different doubles pairings so far in 2011-12 … The Huskies have five matches remaining on their 2012 schedule—two at home and three on the road.


 

Northwood Timberwolves

Northwood has posted a strong start to the 2012 season, having gone 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the GLIAC … the Timberwolves have gone 7-0 on the road this season … NU’s highlight win of the year thus far was a 5-4 victory over No. 8 Rollins … for the season, Northwood is currently 46-8 overall in singles (85.2 percent) and 22-5 in doubles (81.5 percent) … those marks improve to 28-2 in GLIAC singles (93.3 percent) and 14-1 in conference doubles (93.3 percent) … Jean Menard and Youri Perrin have each gone 9-0 thus far in singles … Menard has also gone 8-1 in doubles thus far … the Timberwolves will travel to Ferris State Wednesday (March 28) for their lone match of the week.



Ohio Dominican Panthers

The Panthers are currently 2-10 overall and 1-3 in conference play after picking up its first GLIAC win against Lake Erie College this past weekend. ODU will return to action on Friday, March 30 against Ferris State University. The GLIAC match, played in Big Rapids, MI will start at 3 p.m.

 

 

 

Tiffin Dragons

The Dragons had a 1-2 week, beating Cedarville 6-3 before falling to Ferris State 9-0 and Grand Valley State 6-3. Brian Coffman went 2-1 to lead the Dragons this week, posting a 6-1, 6-2 win over Cedarville and a 7-6, 6-3 win against the Lakers...Overall Coffman has a 7-3 record for the season, while Craig Martin is also doing well with a 6-2 mark...Robbie Ball/Leonid Vladimirov have played well at third doubles, registering an 8-2 overall mark.


 

 

Wayne State Warriors

Wayne State started the season with 13 matches played on the road, including five in Florida. The Warriors (9-6 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) faced some tough competition, including eighth-ranked Rollins College. Over the weekend WSU won both Friday’s match against Michigan Tech (8-1) and Saturday’s match against Lake Superior (9-0). Aman Gill (Windsor, Ont./Assumption College HS) and Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich.) faced tough competition at the top doubles position, winning 9-7 both days. Gill returned to the singles lineup for the first time since the Florida trip on Saturday.
