BAY CITY, Mich. - Ferris State University senior Steven Roberts (San Jose, Calif./Del Mar) earned GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week" honors after a posting perfect 6-0 combined singles and doubles mark for the week.

Steven Roberts - Ferris State
Senior/San Jose, Calif./Del Mar
Steven Roberts was unbeaten on the week with a perfect 6-0
combined singles and doubles mark. Roberts captured all three of
his No. 3 flight singles matches in dominating straight-set wins,
including a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Northwood’s Marcus Oliveira
in a narrow 5-4 setback to the nationally-ranked Timberwolves. He
also paired up with Laurent Galarneau for three doubles victories
at No. 1 doubles. Roberts currently owns a perfect 7-0 mark in
GLIAC singles play and is 6-0 in conference doubles play to date
this campaign.

Ferris State Bulldogs
The Ferris State University
men’s tennis team won two of three matches this past week at
home at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids. FSU
suffered a narrow 5-4 setback to nationally-ranked rival Northwood
on Wednesday (March 28) in Big Rapids before bouncing back to beat
Ohio Dominican and Lake Erie by 9-0 scores in weekend action. The
Bulldogs improved to 11-6 overall and 6-1 in GLIAC action with a
dominating 9-0 shutout of the Storm on Saturday in Big Rapids. The
Bulldogs wrap up their four-match homestand versus Wayne State on
Thursday, April 5, starting at 2 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids. FSU
then visits rival Grand Valley State on April 12 for their final
league regular-season match of the 2012 campaign.
Findlay
Oilers
The University of Findlay men's
tennis team has a 7-5 record on the season with a 2-3 mark in the
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Oilers
will host Ohio Dominican this coming weekend.
Grand Valley State Lakers
The Grand Valley State men’s tennis team is currently on a
six-match win streak in GLIAC play and went 3-0 in last
week’s matches against Hope College, Lake Erie and Ohio
Dominican. The Lakers are closing out their schedule quickly
before the conference tournament. GVSU hosts undefeated Wayne
State on Friday. GVSU dominated in singles competition
picking up wins in every game.
Lake Erie Storm
Lake Erie is 0-9 overall and 0-6 in
the GLIAC. The Storm returns to action on Tuesday, Arpil 3, with a
conference road match at Tiffin University.
Lake Superior State Lakers
The Lakers continue their losing
streak with seven straight losses, being defeated 5-4 in Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play against Findlay and
Tiffin. The Lakers are 0-6 in the GLIAC play. LSSU has only three
matches left. Senior’s Travis Toth (St. Johns, Mich.) and
David Wieczor (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) will play their last home
match against Upper Peninsula opponent Michigan Tech.
Michigan Tech Huskies
Michigan Tech won both of its
matches last weekend to improve to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in GLIAC
play … The Huskies went a combined 6-0 in doubles matches
last weekend. It was their first sweeps in doubles since Feb. 4 in
a 9-0 win at St. Norbert … Tech’s three seniors went a
combined 5-1 in their final two home matches of their careers
… Senior Luke Stupar (Belgrade, Serbia) owns a team-best 10
singles wins on the year including a 4-1 in GLIAC play …
Senior Doug Yossida (Suzano, Brazil) possesses a team-best .615
winning percentage (8-5) in dual matches … Tech has three
regular season matches left on its 2012 schedule, all on the
road.
Northwood Timberwolves
The Northwood University men's tennis team remained unbeaten on the season with a 5-4 victory at Ferris State last week. The Timberwolves are now 9-0 overall, 6-0 in the GLIAC. Northwood is now off until April 13 when they take on Tiffin. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
The Panthers are currently 2-12 overall and 1-5 in conference play after dropping two matches this past weekend to Ferris State and Grand Valley State.
Tiffin Dragons
Andres Torres went 4-1 during the
Dragons’ 2-1 week, including 2-0 in singles play. Torres won
both of his fourth singles matches, while teaming with Brian
Coffman to go 2-1 at second and third doubles...Leonid Vladimirov
also went 2-0 in singles play while going 1-1 in doubles
play...Nicholas Almeida, Chalin Cahlik, andn Craig Martin all won
their lone singles matches...The teams of Almeida/Cahlik and Luiz
Carvalho/Vladimirov also won their doubles matches...Torres and
Coffman both hold the best singles record on the team this year
with identical 9-4 marks. Vladimirov is also 5-2. Vladimirov/Robbie
Ball also hold an 8-3 record in doubles play.
Wayne State Warriors
The Wayne State men’s tennis team took a break from GLIAC play last weekend. The Warriors traveled to face two GLVC foes—Indianapolis and Lewis. WSU split the weekend, defeating UIndy 8-1 and falling just short at Lewis, 5-4. The region’s eighth-ranked Warriors are now 10-7 overall. They will look to preserve their 4-0 GLIAC mark with games this weekend at Ferris State and Grand Valley.
