Wayne State's Oscar Gamarra Named GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State University junior Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) earned GLIAC Men's Tennis "Athlete of the Week" honors after a posting 3-1combined singles and doubles mark for the week.

GLIAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week:

Oscar Gamarra - Wayne State
Junior/Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier

Wayne State University junior Oscar Gamarra was 2-0 at No. five singles this weekend after winning two third set tiebreakers. Gamarra bested Ferris State’s Razvan Mag 4-6, 7-5, 10-4. Later in the week, he rallied back to defeat Grand Valley State’s Josh Kazdan 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. Gamarra also won at third doubles (with partner Thomas Ducret) 8-6 over the Laker duo John McDonald and Dan Jarboe. For the year, Gamarra has a perfect 5-0 singles record in GLIAC matches, and a 3-1 GLIAC mark in doubles.

Ferris State Bulldogs

The Ferris State University men’s tennis team earned a key 5-4 win over Wayne State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on Thursday evening (April 5) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids. FSU improved to 12-6 overall and 7-1 in the GLIAC with the triumph.  The Bulldogs are currently ranked sixth in the Midwest Regional Rankings. Ferris State will next visit Grand Valley State on April 12 for its regular-season league finale starting at 12 p.m. (ET).








Findlay Oilers

The Oilers went 1-1 last week losing to Ohio Dominican at home 6-3 before beating Tiffin on the road 5-4. Findlay will be in action next at Wayne State on April 13.







 

Grand Valley State Lakers

The Lakers snapped a five-match win streak and a six-match conference win streak with a close loss to Wayne State, 5-4 on Friday.  Grand Valley State then fell to No. 37 Lewis on Monday with the only win coming from freshman John McDonald. GVSU closes out conference action against West Michigan rival Ferris State on Thursday.  The Lakers are looking for a spot in the GLIAC Tournament with their 6-2 mark in the league.





 

Lake Erie Storm

Lake Erie is 0-11 overall and 0-7 in the GLIAC. The Storm returns to action on April 13 when they host GLIAC foe Lake Superior State.

 

 

 

 Lake Superior State Lakers

The Lakers claimed their first GLIAC victory over Michigan Tech Saturday, 5-4. Three singles matches went into third-set tiebreakers, with LSSU winning all three matches. Felipe Baptista (Sau Paulo, Brazil) was victorious at No. 1 singles 2-6, 7-5, 6-3; Dane Fosgard (St. Clair, Mich.) defeated MTU 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 6-2 at No. 5 singles, and David Wieczor won at No. 6 singles 0-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Lakers finish their season on the road at Lake Erie and Ohio Dominican April 13-14.




 

Michigan Tech Huskies

Michigan Tech played just one match last week—a 5-4 loss at Lake Superior State. The Huskies have two more matches remaining on their regular season schedule. Both are on the road in Ohio … No. 2 singles player Luka Stupar (Belgrade, Serbia) improved to a team-best 11-7 in singles with his sixth straight victory last week … Senior Doug Yossida (Suzano, Brazil) earned his third consecutive No. 3 singles win last Saturday at Lake Superior State to improve to 9-5 in dual matches on the year.




 

Northwood Timberwolves

The Northwood University men's tennis team was idle this past week. They will return to action April 13 against Tiffin at home.

 

 

 

 

Ohio Dominican Panthers

The Ohio Dominican University men’s tennis team currently is 3-12 overall and 2-5 in conference play after defeating Findlay 6-3 on the road.

 

 

 

 

Tiffin Dragons

Brian Coffman went 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles play as he helped the Dragons go 2-1 for the week. Coffman won a third singles match against Indiana Tech 6-1, 6-1, while also posting wins against Findlay 6-1,6-2 and Lake Erie 6-0, 6-1. His lone loss of the week came in doubles play with Andres Torres 8-5 against Indiana Tech. He also had doubles wins against Findlay 8-4 and Lake Erie 8-0...Leonid Vladimirov and Craig Martin also went 2-0 in singles play for the week, while Kyle Johnson also went 2-1 in singles play at second singles...Robbie Ball/Leonid Vladimirov also posted a 2-0 mark in doubles play.

 

 

Wayne State Warriors

The Wayne State men’s tennis team returned to GLIAC action this past Thursday and Friday with a road trip to Ferris State and Grand Valley. The Warriors suffered their first GLIAC setback of the season at Ferris State, with the Bulldogs taking the 5-4 decision. On Friday. WSU bounced back, winning a very close 5-4 match GVSU. The bottom of the line-up got the job done for the Warriors against the Lakers, with wins at second and third doubles and fourth through sixth singles.
