Ferris State's Laurent Galarneau Earns GLIAC Men’s Tennis “Player of the Year” Award

Ohio Dominican’s Ritchie Kruunenberg Tabbed “Freshman of the Year,” Michigan Tech’s Kevin Kalinee Named “Coach of the Year”

    BAY CITY, Mich. - Ferris State University’s Laurent Galarneau (Montreal, Quebec / Demortagne) was named the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men’s tennis “Player of the Year” by the league’s head coaches in all-conference balloting.  The coaches named Ohio Dominican University’s Ritchie Kruunenberg  (Nieuw-Vennep, Holland / Herbert Vissers College) the league’s “Freshman of the Year,” while Kevin Kalinee, head coach of the Michigan Technological University team, earned GLIAC “Coach of the Year” honors.

     Galarneau has claimed All-GLIAC First Team recognition for the third consecutive year and he’s the first Bulldog men’s tennis player to claim the league’s “Player of the Year” honor in the sport since former Bulldog standout Jan Talian received the distinction in 2003 along with being only the second FSU recipient of the award in the last 20 years. In 2013-14, he helped the Bulldogs to a tie for second place in the league’s regular-season as FSU won eight of its final nine GLIAC matches prior to the postseason tourney. The Bulldogs also narrowly missed receiving an NCAA Tournament berth. This season, Galarneau compiled a 16-8 overall mark in singles play at the number one flight in the Bulldogs’ lineup while ranking as one of the conference and nation’s top performers.  He also owned a 10-1 league singles record, marking the second-straight year in which he’s won at least nine GLIAC outings.  In doubles action, he paired with senior Aaron Dial at the top flight to register a 13-12 ledger, which included a 8-3 leagu e mark

    Kruunenberg In singles play, finished 22-6, including a 9-2 mark in GLIAC play and a 12-4 record at No. 1 singles. He was equally impressive in doubles action, finishing 18-4 overall, including an 8-3 record in GLIAC competition and a 13-3 record at No. 1 doubles. Kruunenberg was ranked in the top-10 in the region in both singles and doubles play and was named the ITA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year.

    Kalinee, in his third year at Tech, guided the Huskies to a 10-11 overall record in 2014 and an eighth-place finish in the GLIAC regular season standings. Michigan Tech entered the GLIAC Tournament as the No. 8 seed and finished sixth—just missing out on a fifth-place win over NCAA Tournament invitee Grand Valley State in the final match.
