GVSU Women's Team & Ashland's Men's Team Lead After Day One of the 2012 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

FINDLAY, Ohio - The Grand Valley State University women's team and the Ashland University men's team are in first place after the first day of competition at the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships being held at the Malcom Athletic Center on the campus of the University of Findlay.

The GVSU women had a strong first day, recording 66 total points. The Lakers were led by freshman Ann Marie Arseneau, who placed first in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17:34.56. The Lakers' Distance Medley Relay team of Betsy Graney, Jordan Chester, Chanelle Caldwell and Rachel Patterson also claimed first place with a time of 11:35.63.

Grand Valley State went 1-2 in the women's pole vault as senior Jocelyn Kuksa and sophomore Kristen Hixson placed first and second, respectively.  Kuksa jumped 3.95 meters, while Hixson posted a leap of 3.80 meters.

GVSU junior Liz Murphy took the women's weitght throw crown with a toss of 21.19 meters, giving the Lakers another first-place finish.

The AU men ended the first day in first place with 43 points.  Senior Brock Weaver claimed the gold medal in the 5000 meters. He won the race in 14:25.00. That is a GLIAC meet record and a field house record. Weaver broke the mark set in 2005 by Grand Valley State's Ryan Cole (14:27.73).

  The Eagles nearly swept the men's weight throw, as senior Ryan Loughney won a conference crown with a throw of 73-1.75.  Junior Richard Quick  finished second (70-11.25), senior Cory Meuleman was fourth (66-4.25) and junior Garrett Grey was fifth (64-3).

The GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will continue on Saturday.
