NU's Bennett and GVSU's Vanek Chosen As GLIAC Men's Indoor Track & Field "Athletes of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Northwood University senior Marcus Bennett  (Redford, Mich./Thurston) and Grand Valley State University senior Daniel Vanek (Dolna Streda, Slovakis) have been chosen as the GLIAC Men's Indoor Track & Field "Athletes of the Week."

Marcus Bennett improved his NCAA provisional qualifying mark en route to finishing first among collegiate competitors in the 60 meter hurdles at the Mike Lints Alumni Open.  Bennett clocked an 8.19 in the finals of the event, which now ranks him 18th nationally in the event.  Bennett’s time is just .01 off the Northwood school record in the event, which has stood since 1985.

Daniel Vanek - Grand Valley State University

It was a record-breaking day for senior Daniel Vanek at the Mike Lints Alumni Open in the Kelly Family Sports Center on Friday (Jan. 20). His throw of 19.09 meters (62'7.75") in the shot put was a GVSU and Kelly Family Sports Center record. The throw broke his own school record of 18.59 meters that he set last year while the Kelly Family Sports Center record he broke was only a week old, set last weekend by former Laker John Ybarra (19.00 meters). The throw was an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark for the defending national champion, and is the top throw in the country by nearly three feet.
