Allendale, Mich.- The Grand Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams are in the lead after the first day of competition at the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Track and Field Championships hosted by Grand Valley University at the Kelly Family Sports Center in Allendale, Mich.

The Grand Valley State women's team recorded 53.50 points on the first day of the event, holding a 11 point advantange over the University of Ashland (42.5 points). The University of Findlay is currently in third place with 27 points. The Lakers placed first in the long jump, while placing second and third in the 5,000 meter. Individually, senior Sam Lockhart set a new school and GLIAC Indoor Championship meet record in the weight throw after unleashing an automatic qualifying toss of 21.50 meters (70'6.5") to win the event.
The GVSU men's team posted 66 points on Day 1, holding a 39-point advantage over second place Ashland University (27 points). The University of Tiffin sits in third place in the men's standings with 23 points. The Lakers placed first in the Distance medley relay with a time of 9:53.34, a new GLIAC Indoor Championship Record (Saginaw Valley State, 9:55.26, 2010) and a new Kelly Family Sports Center Record (Indiana Invaders, 9:54.09, 2013). Individually, freshman Logan Howe placed first in the men's long jump event.
Competition resumes on day 2 of the Championships on Sunday morning with the men's heptatholon at 8:00 a.m. and field events beginning at 11:30 a.m. Sunday's finals will begin at 1:15 p.m.
