AU's Horn and HC's Krout Chosen As GLIAC Men's Outdoor Track and Field "Athletes of the Year" Respectively

BAY CITY, Mich. - Ashland University junior Joe Horn (Waynesfield,Ohio/ Waynesfield-Goshen) and Hillsdale College senior Jared Krout (Forest, Ohio/ Arlington) were named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's outdoor track and field "Athletes of the Year," respectively. Ashland University's Cory Lamar (Wakeman, Ohio/Firelands) and University of Findlay's Lyndon Johnson (Southfield, Mich.) were voted "Co-Freshman of the Year" while Ashland University's Jud Logan was named "Coach of the Year."

GLIAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year:

Junior Joe Horn led the Eagles over the weekend at the GLIAC Championship.  He was part of the 4X100 and 4X400 squads that took home first place.  He also won a gold medal in the 400 meters (48.15), was fifth in the 200 meters (22.38) and eighth in the 100 meters (12.89).  His performance earned him the athlete of the year, and this after he won the indoor athlete of the year earlier this season.

 

GLIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Year:
Jared Krout - Hillsdale

Forest, Ohio/Arlington

 Senior Jared Krout was named the GLIAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Year after winning the long jump event with an NCAA-provisional mark of 24 feet, 4 ½ inches. He played a big part in Hillsdale’s third-place finish at the meet, finishing second in the 200 meter dash, third in the 400 and was part of the second-place 4x100 relay team.
 


GLIAC Men's Track Co-Freshman of the Year:

Cory Lamar continues to tally awards in his freshman season.  At the GLIAC Championships, he was co-freshman of the year after placing in multiple events.  He was part of both the 4X100 and 4X400 squads that took home first place.  Lamar was also second in the 400 meters (48.33) and sixth in the 200 (22.38).  He was the indoor freshman of the year as well.

 

GLIAC Men's Track Co-Freshman of the Year:
Lyndon Johnson - Findlay
Senior, Sprints
Southfield, Mich.

Lyndon Johnson was named the Co-Freshman of the Year after leading the team with a pair of first place finishes in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Johnson took first in the 100-meter at 10.73 and captured the gold in the 200-meter with a time of 21.54. He also teamed with Curtis Smithey, Greg Schaible and Simon Bernard to finish third in the 4x400-meter relay at 3:19.51.

 

GLIAC Men's Coach of the Year:
Jud Logan - Ashland

AU’s Jud Logan earned the men’s track and field coach of the year after another impressive performance by his squad.  It is the third consecutive season that the men’s team has won the outdoor championship under Coach Logan.  The Eagles also received two other individual honors under the coaching of Logan; Cory Lamar as co-freshman of the year and Joe Horn as the athlete of the year.

Ashland Eagles

The Ashland squad won the GLIAC Championship for the third consecutive season.  AU ended the event with 208.50 points.  Joe Horn was honored as the men’s athlete of the year in the running events.  Horn won a gold medal in the 400 meters (48.15), was fifth in the 200 meters (22.38) and eighth in the 100 meters (12.89). He was on the 4X1 relay and 4X4 relay that won gold medals. The 4X1 finished in 41.53 and the 4X4 had a winning time of 3:16.18.  Cory Lamar shared the GLIAC freshman of the year award with Findlay’s Lyndon Johnson. Lamar was part of the 4X1 squad and the 4X4 team.  He was also second in the 400 meters (48.33) and sixth in the 200 (22.38).  Cyrus Granger brought home a gold medal in the 400 hurdles. His time there was 54.21.  Alan Dunson was third in that event (55.33) and Wesley Washington was fifth (55.83).  Max Hiltner finished first in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:59.10.  Blaine Maag gave the Eagles 10 points with a gold medal in the discus.  In the shot put D.J. Duke won the gold medal (55-11) and Kurt Roberts was the silver medalist (55-04.75). Maag was sixth (52-11.5).  The Eagles got a first place finish and 10 points from Nate Logan in the decathlon. AU head coach Jud Logan was named the men’s coach of the year.

 

Ferris State Bulldogs

The Ferris State University men’s track and field team wrapped up action in the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Championships on Friday (May 7) at Top Taggart Field. The Bulldog men concluded the three-day meet on their home track in 10th with eight points.Sophomore Justin Price captured third place for the Bulldog men in the finals of the 400 meters (48.40) to earn All-GLIAC accolades. Senior Mike Mangieri wound up seventh for the Bulldogs in the 5,000 meters (15:08.98) and sophomore Tyler Crossman narrowly missed placing in the top eight of the same event as he came in ninth overall (15:17.62) with sophomore Alex Best in 10th place (15:18.02) of 32 finishers in the race. The Bulldog men also finished ninth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:28.95). Finally, freshman David Silversmith received ninth place overall in the 10,000 meters (31:55.29). This year represented only the fourth time in the last 24 years that FSU played host to the GLIAC Outdoor Championships.

 

Findlay Oilers

The University of Findlay men’s outdoor track and field teams completed the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship on Friday, May7 in Big Rapids, Michigan. The men’s team finished fourth with 84 points.  Lyndon Johnson was named the Newcomer of the Year after leading the team with a pair of first place finishes in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Johnson took first in the 100-meter at 10.73 and captured the gold in the 200-meter with a time of 21.54. He also teamed with Curtis Smithey, Greg Schaible and Simon Bernard to finish third in the 4x400-meter relay at 3:19.51. Derrick Vicars was second in the discus with a provisional heave of 172’08 and also took third in the shot put at 54’01, also a provisional mark. Chris Ehrman placed fourth in the pole vault at 14’10.00 and Schaible was sixth in the 400-meter after crossing the finish line in 50.40.

 

Grand Valley State Lakers

Grand Valley State finished second at the 2010 Outdoor GLIAC Championships on Friday (May 7) in Big Rapids, Mich. The Lakers scored 197.5 points, just 11 points behind first place Ashland (208.5).  Junior Tyler Emmorey collected 15 points, with a first place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:20.20) and a fourth place finish in the 1500-meter run (4:02.44). Jeff Nordquist finished behind Emmorey in the steeplechase with a time of 9:25.8 and placed third in the 1500-meter run (4:01.74).  Sophomore Ryan Brown claimed two-second place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles (14.89) and in the 400-meter hurdles (54.48). GVSU collected 25 points in the 5000-meter run with Paul Zielinski finishing first (14:51.53), followed by Ryan Toth (14:52.55) in second. John Dyer crossed the finish line second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.31, while Jovon Faulk placed fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.33). Quinton Dennis earned the GLIAC title with a vault of 16’3.5", while Matt Gordeneer finished third (15’9.75"). Nate Miller placed second in the high jump with a jump of 6’7" and Nathaniel Smith finished third in the triple jump (45’4.25"). Donny Stiffler finished fourth in the shot put (53’9.25") and seventh in the discus (146’8"), while Ian Evans finished fifth in the shot put (53’1").

 

Hillsdale Chargers

Hillsdale College men’s track team finished in third place at the 2010 GLIAC Championships, held at Ferris State University. The Charger men racked up 88 points. Senior Jared Krout was named the men’s Field Athlete of the Year. Krout contributed many points to Hillsdale’s effort, winning the long jump while helping the 4x100 relay team to a second place finish. He also took second in the 200 meter dash (21.90) and fourth in the 400 meter dash (48.56). Jacob Secor provided another highlight on the men’s side with his fourth-place time of 14:55.59 in the 5000 meter run. Jason Stomps, a national champion during the indoor season, captured a GLIAC title in the hammer throw with an NCAA-automatic qualifying mark of 66.39 meters. Fellow senior Aaron Falk also auto-qualified in the same event, finishing fourth with a mark of 60.63 meters. Krout, a many-time champion in the long jump and sprint events, took first place in the former, clearing a jump that covered 7.43 meters. That was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

 

Lake Superior State Lakers

Junior Jonathon Allen (Lansing, Mich.) easily won the men’s triple jump with a distance of 15.03 meters, but did not meet his personal best in rainy conditions during the GLIAC Championships. He is currently ranked fifth nationally in the event at 15.46 meters and has already qualified for the NCAA Championships. Top-10 finishers for the LSSU men’s track and field team were junior Ben Charbonneau (Sudbury, Ont.), who was fourth in the javelin throw (55.21 meters), senior Jake Hoover (Capac, Mich.), who was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:39.3), junior Patrick Wright (Luzerne, Mich.), who was ninth in the long jump (6.62 meters), and junior John Preczewski (Roscommon, Mich.), who was 10th in the high jump (1.81 meters). Charbonneau was the GLIAC defending champion in the javelin.

 

Michigan Tech Huskies

Quinn Parnell was the top finisher for Michigan Tech after finishing second in the 100 (10.98) at the GLIAC Championships. Parnell was also a member of the 4x100 relay that finished sixth in 43.31. Other relay members included Aaron Tetzloff, Tylor Rathsack and Nate Saliga. Ken Gilkerson finished seventh in the 800 in a time of 1:55.74, tied for 10th best in school history. He also helped the 4x400 relay to an eighth place finish in 3:25.22. Rathsack, Saliga and Aaron Cedergren were also members of the relay. Chris Schafer ran to an 11th place finish in the 5,000 (15:25.46). Brian Stetter also finished eighth in the 10,000. His time of 31:46.35 was the second fastest in school history and only 14 seconds off his school record.

 

Northwood Timberwolves

The men's team placed seventh overall at the 2010 GLIAC Championship with 63 points. Ashland was the overall winner at 208.50, followed by Grand Valley State at 197.50. Paris Gooch (Mt. Morris, Mich./Flint Beecher) had Northwood's top individual finish, earning a second place finish in the long jump with a mark of 23-4.50. Jared Fischer (Unionville, Mich./USA) placed third in the 800, clocking a 1:54.01. Kevin Lawson (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) finished fourth in the 100 with a time of 11.18, while Marcus Bennett (Redford, Mich./Thurston) was fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (15.38). Doug Lander (Dryden, Mich.) clocked a 55.37 in the 400 hurdles to place fourth overall. Craig Borsenik (Durand, Mich./Corunna) also earned a fourth place finish in the discus with a NCAA provisional mark of 167-2.

 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals

Competing in the decathlon, were junior Aaron Wilkins and freshman Tyler Grob. Wilkins and Grob would finish the day placing third and second overall with point totals of 5,445 and 5,949.  Later that day, seniors Steve Genther and Cortland Seaver would earn second and fifth place finishes in the 10,000-meter run finals, Genther timing in at a provisionally qualifying time of 30:35.76 and Seaver coming in at 31:19.34.  The third day Genther also placed third in the 5,000-meter run timing in at 14:55.16.  Placing first in the 800-meter run was senior Tony Filipek crossing the line with a provisionally qualifying time of 1:52.10.  Teammate Marion Body would also earn a top finish in the 800-meter run placing fifth clocking in at 1:55.04, he also placed second in the 1,500-meter run finishing with a time of 4:01.09.  The men’s team finished sixth overall with a total of 64 points.  With the exception of a few athletes competing in the national meet, the conclusion of the GLIAC Championships ended the men’s track and field season.

Tiffin Dragons

Ramone Brant was the lone GLIAC champion for Tiffin University at the GLIAC Track and Field Championships, winning the 110 hurdles with a NCAA provisional mark of 14.6 seconds. He helped lead the Dragons to a 5th place finish on the men’s side. Lee Miller came in 2nd in the pole vault with a vault of 15-9.75 Other top finishers for TU included Dominic Colvin (400 - 5th), Eric Maag (high jump - 4th, 6-5), Travis LeFlore (high jump - 4th 6-5), Antoine Allen (long jump - 4th, 22-8.5; triple jump - 4th, 44-9.5), Ray Robinson (discus - 6th), John Havrilla (hammer throw - 5th), and Logan Garcia (decathlon - 5th).
