Beaverton, Ore. -- Ashland University strength and conditioning coach A.G. Kruger earned a spot at the 2012 Olympic Games in London on Thursday (June 21) by finishing third in the hammer throw at the United States Olympic Trials in Beaverton, Ore. This is the third time Kruger has qualified for the Olympics.
Kruger will be joined in London by former AU thrower Kibwe Johnson. Johnson finished first in the hammer on Thursday. This will be his first trip to the Olympics.
Johnson took top honors in the hammer with a mark of 245-11. Chris Cralle was second (243-11) and Kruger was third (242-6). Johnson and Kruger were the only athletes in the field to reach the Olympic “A” qualifying standard this season. The top three athletes with the Olympic “A” standard make the team. If three athletes don’t reach that standard, then only two athletes make the team.
AU’s Ryan Loughney competed at the Trials and was 13th. His best throw was 222-5. Loughney completed his college eligibility this spring. He won five national championships in is career.
