BAY CITY, Mich. - Tiffin University freshman Colin Fisher (Delta, Ohio) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's cross country "Runner of the Week" after setting a meet record at the Carson-Newman Challenge last weekend.

Colin Fisher - Tiffin University
(FR, Delta, Ohio)
Tiffin University freshman Colin Fisher ran a career eight
kilometer best of 25:34.87 to win the Carson-Newman Challenge.
Fisher won the race by nearly 30 seconds setting a new meet record
and beating defending champion, Simon Holzapfel from Tusculum
College. It was his first collegiate victory for the Dragons, as
Tiffin finished first as a team, winning by 65 points.
Ashland - Ashland did not run last week. The
Eagles are idle until they run at the All-Ohio Championships Sept.
30 at Cedarville.
Ferris State - The Ferris State University
men’s cross country team took part in the non-scoring
Michigan State Spartan Invitational on Friday (Sept. 16) at Forest
Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich. The event featured
runners from Division I schools such as MSU, Eastern Michigan,
Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Toledo, Kent State and Miami
(Ohio) in addition to rival Grand Valley State along with other
Division II and smaller schools. On the men’s side, junior
Ryan Chute paced FSU by placing 34th overall (25:28) among 257
competitors in the 8K event. Freshman Spencer Gerber came in next
at 73rd (26:06) followed by sophomore David Silversmith in 74th
(26:06) and senior Alex Best at 79th (26:11). Over 4,800 athletes
and 300 teams, covering college, high school and middle school age
groups competed this afternoon, setting a new high mark for
participants at the MSU event. The Bulldogs will next take part in
the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 1 at Louisville, Ky.
Findlay - The Oilers placed 14th at the Iona Meet
of Champions and were led by Shoayb Bascal, who finished 63rd with
a time of 26:47. Justin Eilerman took 73rd (27:01) and Tim Majoy
finished 84th (27:18). Sean Jones (27:29), Luis Velasco
(27:55), Joe Guerra (28:45), Jacob Hayes (29:26), Brock Lloyd
(29:47), Alex Betts (30:34), Connor Walthour (31:22), Dillon
Webster (32:03) and Colin Walthour (33:05) also finished the race
for Findlay.
Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State had
the best showing of any team at the non-scoring Spartan Invite,
placing four runners in the top 15 among a majority of Division I
schools. The Lakers were led by seniors Anthony Witt (24:30) and
Tyler Emmorey (24:34) who finished third and fourth, respectively.
Juniors Stephen Fuelling and Jake Isaacson each recorded personal
bests at the event with Fuelling finishing ninth with a time of
24:50 and Isaacson crossing the line in 14th with a time of 24:57.
Had the event been scored, the Lakers would have outdistanced hosts
Michigan State by four points to claim the victory, despite running
without All-American Ryan Toth. GVSU will be back in action on
Sept. 30 when they head to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame
Invite.
Hillsdale - The Hillsdale College men’s
cross country team spent Friday afternoon in East Lansing, on the
campus of Michigan State University, participating in the Spartan
Invite. No team scores were kept at the meet, and Hillsdale runners
competed against the top competitors from schools like Grand Valley
State, Michigan State and Eastern Michigan, among others. The top
men’s runner at the meet for the Chargers was senior Jacob
Secor, who finished 30th overall with a time of 25:23. Secor was
the fastest runner from a GLIAC school other than Grand Valley
State at the meet. Freshman Josh Mirth, who has made an immediate
impact on the team, was 43rd overall at the meet, finishing in
25:37. Twelve runners finished between Secor and Mirth, although
they were separated by just 14 seconds. A trio of Chargers finished
back-to-back-to-back, in 90th, 91st and 92nd place overall. Tim
Jagielski led the pack with a time of 26:24. He was followed by
Jordan Eccleston and Jack Butler.
Lake Erie - Junior Craig Gerber (Fremont,
Ohio/Clyde) posted a top-10 finish to highlight the Lake Erie
College cross country teams’ performances at the Penn State
Behrend Invitational Saturday morning (Sept. 17) in Erie, Pa.
Gerber finished in 10th place. Gerber’s time of 27:02.5 was
also his personal best time. Overall, the Storm men placed eighth
of 14 teams at the event. Sophomore Jimmy Hudd (Mentor,
Ohio/Mentor/Ashland) was close behind Gerber, placing 18th in a
time of 27:31.7 and giving the Storm a pair of top-20 and
sub-30-minute runners. The Storm runners are in action next
Saturday, Sept. 24, at the annual Edinboro University Rag
Relays.
Lake Superior State - LSSU was idle this
past week and their next meet is the Roy Griak on Sept. 24 in
Minneapolis, Minn.
Michigan Tech - The Michigan Tech cross country
team will compete at one of the largest cross country meets in the
nation, the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of
Minnesota, this Saturday. The team finished ninth of 14 teams at
the St. Olaf Invite last Saturday (Sept. 17). Freshman Jani Lane
paced the men’s team with a 15th place finish. The Anchorage,
Alaska native finished the eight-kilometer course in 26:30.
Tech’s next six runners finished 12 seconds apart. Junior
Karl Koivisto finished 47th (27:37) and teammate freshman Eric
Parsell was two spots back (27:38). Freshman Bradon Kampstra and
junior Nathan Manderfield each posted identical times of 27:47 to
finish 53rd and 54th respectively. Junior Jonathan Kilpela was one
spot back (27:49).
Northwood - The Northwood University men’s
cross country team competed at the Spartan Invitational Friday
afternoon (September 16). No team scoring was taken at the event,
which was hosted by Michigan State University at the Forest Akers
East Golf Course. The meet featured competitors from across
all divisions of collegiate athletics, ranging from junior college
to Division I. The team was led by Marcus Rogers (Howell,
Mich./Pinckney). He was NU’s top finisher for the
second week in a row, clocking a 26:42 to place 114th out of 257
competitors on the 8K course. Grant Goodspeed (St. Louis,
Mich.) finished 131st with a time of 27:01. Northwood will have
next week off. They will return to action September 30 at the
Lansing Community College Invitational.
Ohio Dominican - Ohio Dominican’s cross
country team competed at the Catholic Championships, hosted by the
University of Notre Dame on Friday…On the men’s side,
Michael Barber set a school record while leading the team with a
55th place finish, completing the course in 26:46. Todd Hewitt was
moments behind him in 62nd place and a time of 26:53. Matt
Richardson had a time of 28:40, Ethan Miller finished in 28:52 and
Brian Litt had a time of 29:33 to round out the top five for
ODU…It was the first time in school history that the
men’s team has had all five runners break the 30 minute
barrier in the same race.
Saginaw Valley State - The Saginaw Valley State
University men’s cross country team competed Friday in the
Michigan State University 8k hosted Spartan Invitational. The
Cardinals ran well against a very competitive field of schools
including Michigan State University, Grand Valley State University,
Western Michigan University, and Miami (OH) and were led by
transfers Joseph Burelle (Sterling Heights, Mich./Livonia Stevenson
HS) and Eric Spitz (Holt, Mich./Holt HS), finishing the 8K with
final times of 26:05 and 26:29, good for 72nd and 99th place
finishes. Coming in behind Burelle and Spitz was junior Tyler
Noble (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd HS) who earned a 108th place finish
clocking in at 26:41. Rounding out Saginaw Valley’s
top-five were teammates Kyle Henderson (Freeland, Mich./Freeland
HS) and Jonathan Wetters (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) who crossed
the line at 26:58 and 27:03, respectively. The Cardinals are back
in action again September 30th when they compete in the Lansing
Community College Invitational.
Tiffin - Freshman Colin Fisher finished first
with a meet record time of 25:34.87 (8K) as the Tiffin University
men’s cross country team swept the Carson-Newman XC
Challenge Saturday morning at Panther Creek State Park. Tiffin
placed seven runners among the top 13 to score 23 points, winning
by 65 points over Tennessee Wesleyan. Rounding out the top five
were Lincoln Memorial (3rd - 100 pts.), Brevard (4th - 106 pts.)
and Carson-Newman (5th - 139 pts.). Fisher ran 25:34.87 to win the
race and set the new meet record. He won the race by nearly 30
seconds over the defending champion, Simon Holzapfel. Sophomore
Brent Hunter cracked the top five as he ran 26:54.89 to place
fourth. Rounding out the top ten was freshman Kevin McKown (6th -
27:19.81), freshman David Knack (7th - 27:24.82) and freshman Jimmy
Charles (9th - 27:40.54).
Wayne State - Fresh off recording its first win
since 2006 at the Detroit Titan Invitational, the Wayne State
men’s cross country team traveled to Michigan State
University for the Spartan Invitational on Sept. 16. The 8k run saw
senior Kevin deBear lead the Warriors in 44th place (25:37), while
fellow senior Travis Barczak followed up his first career race win
with a 60th place time of 25:53. Senior Alex Townsend (26:02) and
sophomore Nicholas Jackson (26:04) ended the day in 65th and 69th,
respectively. Junior Phil Baldick had a solid showing in 78th place
(26:11). Junior Doug Mack (111th-26:41) and Matt Devey
(119th-26:50) rounded out the Warrior contingent in the top 120.
The Warriors run next on Oct. 1 at the George Mason Invitational in
Fairfax, Va.
