BAY CITY, Mich. - Ashland University senior Matt Stratman (Chardon, Ohio) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's cross country "Runner of the Week" after finishing second at the Carnegie-Mellon Invitational.

Matt Stratman - Ashland University
(SR, Chardon, Ohio)
Senior Matt Stratman finished second overall and posted the top
collegiate time at the Carnegie-Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh.
Stratman helped lead Ashland University to a first place finish at
the event with only 29 total points, 51 less than second place
Northern Kentucky. He ran the eight kilometer course in a time of
25:26.92 and finished less than a second ahead of teammate Brock
Weaver.
Ashland - The Eagles finished first in a field of
13 teams last Saturday (Oct. 8) at the Carnegie-Mellon Invitational
in Pittsburgh. AU finished with 29 points to easily
outdistance second place Northern Kentucky (80). CMU (86) was third
and California (136) was fourth. Senior Matt Stratman (Chardon,
Ohio) finished second. His time on the 8K course was 25:26.92.
Senior Brock Weaver (Ashland, Ohio) was third (25:44.23) and senior
Cameron Johnson (Mt. Gilead, Ohio) was eighth (26:11.00). Former
CMU runner Brian Harvey won the race in 25:26.92…the Eagles
are ranked third in this week’s regional
rankings…Ashland is idle this week.
Ferris State - The Ferris State University
men’s cross country team did not compete this past
week. The Bulldogs will take part in the Penn State National
meet this Friday (Oct. 14) in State College, Pa. FSU is currently
ranked sixth in the Midwest Region. The Bulldogs will host
the NCAA-II Midwest Regional on Nov. 5 at FSU’s Katke Golf
Course.
Findlay - The Oilers were idle this week and will
be in action next on Oct. 14 at the Wilmington Fall Classic.
Grand Valley State - The third-ranked Laker
cross country team got a big race from sophomore Joe Graves won the
individual title at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships in
Hillsdale, Mich. over the weekend, crossing the line six seconds
ahead of second place with a time of 26:08.38 on the 8k course.
Sophomore Lucas Roscoe (26:41.77) finished seventh while sophomore
Brandon Cushman (26:44.81) finished ninth to give the Lakers three
runners in the top 10. The effort was enough to score the Lakers a
second place finish in the event as they missed out on the team
trophy by only one point, despite sitting their top 12 runners in
preparation for this weekend’s Penn State National
Invitational.
Hillsdale - The brand-new Hayden Park cross
country course was dedicated at a gala ceremony Friday afternoon,
preceding the Michigan Intercollegiate Cross Country Meet. For
their part, the cross country runners from the Chargers performed
extremely well at the meet. The meet was divided up among Division
I teams, with Division II and III schools competing against one
another, followed by an open meet. Hillsdale’s duo of Jacob
Secor (second) and Joshua Mirth (third) were among the top five
runners in the meet. Secor finished the race in 26:14, just six
seconds behind the winner from Grand Valley State. Those high
finishes helped the Chargers to a first-place finish at the DII/III
portion of the meet, with 22 points. GVSU was second with 28, and
Wayne State finished third with 47 points. Jordan Eccleston ran one
of his best races on the college’s home course, finishing
seventh overall with a time of 26:42.
Lake Erie - Lake Erie did not compete this week
and will next be in action at Ashland for the GLIAC Championships
on Oct. 22.
Lake Superior State - Sophomores Taylor
Heath (Hanover, Mich.) and Mark List (Lansing, Mich.) finished
first and second, respectively, at last Friday’s Upper
Peninsula Championships hosted by Northern Michigan University.
Heath finished in 26:44, while List followed in 26:50.3. Michigan
Tech claimed the next seven spots and won the team event by 11
points. It was Heath’s second top-10 finish in three meets
this season. The Lakers compete at the GLIAC Championships on Oct.
22.
Michigan Tech - The Michigan Tech cross country
team won the Upper Peninsula Collegiate Championship team title
last week. Freshman Jani Lane was the top finisher for the Huskies
with a third place finish in the eight-kilometer race (28:04). Matt
Dugan and Eric Parsell finished right behind Lane for fourth
(28:06) and fifth (28:08). Calvin Nitz finished sixth (28:14) and
Nathan Manderfield was seventh (28:14) to complete the top-five for
Tech. Tech will take this weekend off before competing at the GLIAC
Championships Oct. 22 in Ashland, Ohio.
Northwood - The Northwood University cross
country teams competed at the Michigan Intercollegiates Friday
afternoon (October 7). The event featured collegiate runners from
all divisions and was hosted by Hillsdale College. Marcus Rogers
(Howell, Mich./Pinckney) was the top NU finisher for the fourth
straight time. He placed 27th overall on the 8K course with a
time of 27:11.33. Grant Goodspeed (St. Louis, Mich.) was 61st
at 27:54.34. A total of 187 runners took part in the
men’s race. Northwood will compete at the GLIAC Championships
October 22.
Ohio Dominican - Ohio Dominicans men’s
cross country team was off this week. The Panthers will run next at
the Wilmington Fall Classic on Oct. 14.
Saginaw Valley State - The Saginaw Valley State
University men’s cross country teams finished seventh overall
at the Hillsdale College hosted Michigan Intercollegiate
Championships on Friday. The Cardinals competed well in a
very competitive field of teams including Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) members Hillsdale
College, Grand Valley State University, and Wayne State University.
The men’s team was led by junior Tyler Noble (Shepherd,
Mich./Shepherd HS) who finished 11th overall coming in with a final
time of 26:45.97 for the 8K race. Junior transfer Joseph
Burelle (Sterling Heights, Mich./Livonia Stevenson HS) finished
just behind Noble crossing the line at 27:10.89 which was good for
a 26th place finish. Burelle was followed by junior Eric
Spitz (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) who claimed 45th place timing in at
27:34.81. Freshman Drew Meylan (Bay City, Mich./Bay City
Western HS) earned a spot in the Cardinals top-five crossing the
line with a final time of 28:10.69, good for a 66th place
finish. Rounding out Saginaw Valley’s top-five were
teammates Greg Baade (Warren, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) and
Jacob Lauka (Oxford, Mich./Lake Orion HS) who clocked in at
28:13.16 and 28:15.13, respectively, good for 70th and 73rd places.
The Cardinals will be back in action Saturday (10/22) when they
compete in the Ashland University hosted GLIAC Championships.
Tiffin - The Tiffin men’s cross country
team competed against Trine University in the Tiffin Homecoming 5k.
Tiffin finished first as a team in the race and had the six of the
top seven individual finishers.
Wayne State - In a talent-filled race heralding
the top collegiate runners across the state of Michigan, the Wayne
State men’s cross country team ran to a third place showing
at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Hillsdale
College on Friday afternoon. Out of 187 participants, the Warriors
placed six runners in the top 50 including two in the top 10.
Senior Alex Townsend (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington)
(26:32.48) and junior Jimmy Maloney (Wyandotte, Mich./Wyandotte)
(26:45.72) conquered the fifth and 10th positions, respectively.
Senior Travis Barczak (Williamston, Mich./Williamston)
(22nd-27:08.80) and senior Kevin deBear (Plymouth, Mich./Salem)
(23rd-27:09.17) crossed the finish line in succession, while junior
Doug Mack (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) came in just after the
pair 28th place with a time of 27:11.87. As junior Jason Smith
(Canton, Mich./Salem) rounded out the top 50 in 43rd place with a
mark of 27:33.61, junior Matt Devey (Canton, Mich./Salem) finished
56th (27:54.01).
