BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University senior Anthony Witt (Jasonville, Ind./Shakamak) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's cross country "Athlete of the Year" after winning the individual title at the GLIAC Championship meet.

Senior Anthony Witt claimed the GLIAC Men’s Cross Country “Athlete of the Year” award this past weekend at the GLIAC Championships in Ashland, Ohio, finishing the eight kilometer course in a time of 25:24.34, leading a group of Lakers that swept the podium. His top finish led GVSU to their 10th straight men’s cross country title and the first victory of the year for Witt. He has not finished below fourth place in any event he ran this season.



 

 

 

 

Ashland - The Eagles are ranked fourth in this week’s regional rankings…AU finished second at last week’s GLIAC Championships, hosted by the Eagles at Brookside Golf Course…senior Brock Weaver (Ashland, Ohio) had Ashland’s best finish. He was fourth. Weaver’s time on the 8K course was 25:53.53. Senior Tom Scott (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee) had his best race of the year, finishing 14th in 26:18.29.

 

 

 



Ferris State - Junior Tyler Crossman paced FSU by finishing eighth overall (26:09.30).  Senior Alex Best was 27th (26:43.83), sophomore David Silversmith came in 28th (26:46.31) and junior Ryan Chute placed 29th (26:53.07).  Freshman Spencer Gerber was 32nd (26:56.02) with freshman Andrew Harper coming in 34th (26:58.03). Senior Steve Neshkoff placed 43rd (27:12.53), freshman Charlton Craig came in 52nd (27:27.58), sophomore Bill King took 65th place (27:54.42) and sophomore Connor LaRowe wound up 77th (28:28.60) in the 117-runner division.

 

 

 

 

Findlay - The University of Findlay men's  cross country team completed the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship on Saturday, October 22 in Ashland, Ohio.  The men took eighth at the event. Shoayb Bascal finished 15th with a time of 26:19.74 while Sean Jones was 35th after crossing the finish line in 27:02.86.

 

 

 

 



Grand Valley State - The third-ranked Lakers captured their 10th straight GLIAC Championship this weekend in Ashland, Ohio, sweeping the podium en route to a nearly perfect finish. The Lakers had only 17 points, only two points off the minimum possible score as GVSU put five runners in the top six. Senior Anthony Witt won the event with a time of 25:24.34 and was named the GLIAC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year. Finishing just behind him was senior Tyler Emmorey in second (25:28.72) and senior Ryan Toth (25:44.60). Finishing fifth was junior Brent Showerman (25:56.83) and sixth was senior Nathan Knisely (25:59.41). The Lakers will now prepare for the NCAA Midwest Regional in Big Rapids, Mich. on November 5th.

 

 

 

Hillsdale - The men's cross country team from Hillsdale College finished in fifth place at Saturday's GLIAC Cross Country Championships, hosted by Ashland University. The Charger men scored 156 team points, and were led by a pair of runners who finished in the top 20 overall. Jacob Secor took 16th with a time of 26:24, while teammate Tim Jagielski was one spot behind with a time of 26:26. Freshman Luke Hickman turned in one of his best runs of the season with a third-place finish on the team and 37th overall, completing the race in 27:05.

 

 

 

 

 

Lake Erie - Lake Erie College had seven runners compete at the 2011 GLIAC Championships hosted by Ashland University Saturday. The top Lake Erie finisher was sophomore Jimmy Hudd (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) who took 71st with a time of 28:23.15.  Junior Craig Gerber (Fremont, Ohio/Clyde) followed Hudd in 81st place with a time of 28:45.15.  Rounding on the Storm men were juniors David Gobrogge (Akron, Ohio/Green) and Devin O’Neill (Concord, Ohio/Mentor) with times of 31:14.66 and 33:53.84. Lake Erie has just one event left in its season, as it will compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Big Rapids, Mich. on Nov. 5.

 

 

 

 

 

Lake Superior State -  Lake Superior State placed 11th among 12 teams at the GLIAC Championships held Saturday at Ashland University. Sophomore Taylor Heath (Hanover, Mich.) placed 20th in 26:31.97 to lead the Lakers. Junior Robert Swain (New Hudson, Mich.) was 65th in 28:46.55 for the Laker men. The Lakers compete in the Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 5 in Big Rapids.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Michigan Tech - The Michigan Tech men’s cross country finished ninth at the GLIAC Championships in Ashland, Ohio. Freshman Jani Lane was the top finisher for the Huskies, placing 50th. He covered the eight-kilometer course in 27:23. The team will take this weekend off before competing at the NCAA Regionals in Big Rapids, Mich. Nov. 5th.



 

 

 

 


Northwood - The Northwood University cross country teams competed at the GLIAC Championships Saturday afternoon (October 22). The event was hosted by Ashland University at the Brookside Golf Course. The men’s team placed 10th overall with a score of 304. Leading the way for the Timberwolves was Marcus Rogers (Howell, Mich./Pinckney).  He clocked a 27:16.00 over the 8K course to place 48th overall.  Grant Goodspeed (St. Louis, Mich.) placed 63rd at 27:50.12.  A total of 117 runners took part in the men’s race. Northwood will compete at the NCAA Regional Championships November 5.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ohio Dominican - Freshman Michael Barber (New Franklin, OH) with a time of 28:38.69, combined for a total time of 2:28:33.20 over the 8K course, while fellow Panther newcomer Todd Hewitt (Eaton, OH) was close behind, crossing the line in 28:48.34. After a two week break, they will return to the course on Saturday, Nov. 5 as they compete at the Division II Midwest Regional, hosted by Ferris State at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Michigan.

 

 

 

 

 


Saginaw Valley State - The Saginaw Valley State University men’s cross country teams competed in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Cross Country Championships on Saturday.  The men’s team finished seventh overall with four runners in the top-50 for the 8k race. The men’s team was led by junior Tyler Noble who clocked in at 26:36.58, good for a 22nd place finish.  Junior transfer Eric Spitz would follow close behind Noble earning a 26th place finish crossing the line at 26:39.50.  Transfer Joseph Burelle timed in at 27:06.81 placing him 39th overall.  Rounding out Saginaw Valley’s top-five were teammates Chad Scott and Jacob Lauka who clocked in at 27:33.98 and 27:46.07, respectively, good for 55th and 64th place finishes. The Cardinals are back in action again on Saturday, November 5 when they compete in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.

 

 

 


Tiffin - Freshman Colin Fisher was named GLIAC Freshman of the Year as the Tiffin University men's  cross country team competed in the GLIAC Championships, Saturday afternoon at Brookside Golf Course in an 8K race. Fisher ran 26:11.25 to place ninth, earning All-GLIAC honors as well as top freshman honors. Rounding out the top five were sophomore Brent Hunter (33rd - 26:57.68), freshman Kevin McKown (40th - 27:07.89), freshman David Knack (42nd - 27:11.96) and freshman Jimmy Charles (66th - 27:58.27).

 

 

 

 

 



Wayne State - For the second consecutive year, the Wayne State University men’s cross country team ran to a third place finish at the GLIAC Championships. The 8k race hosted by Ashland University saw senior Kevin deBear (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) lead the Warriors with a seventh place showing (26:00.26) earning him All-GLIAC First Team honors for the first time in his career. Senior Alex Townsend (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington) garnered All-GLIAC Second Team accolades after tallying an 11th place performance (26:13.66). Juniors Jimmy Maloney (Wyandotte, Mich./Wyandotte Roosevelt) (26:37.19) and Travis Barczak (Williamston, Mich./Williamston) (26:39.34) placed 23rd and 25th, respectively. Sophomore Nick Jackson (Washington, Mich./Romeo) came across the finish line next for WSU in 31st with a time of 26:54.32, while junior Jason Smith (Canton, Mich./Salem) (27:05.64) and freshman Nick Culbertson (Clinton Twp., Mich./Dakota) (27:10.08) ended the race in 38th and 41st, correspondingly. Junior Matt Devey (Canton, Mich./Salem) rounded out the Warrior contingent in the top 50th in 47th with a time of 27:15.03.
