GVSU Claims 2013 GLIAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Grand Valley State University men's and women's cross country teams took home titles from the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's and women's cross country championships held on Saturday (Oct. 26) at the Michigan Tech Trails in Houghton, Michigan.

The opening event of the day was the Women's Championship race which was won by Grand Valley State with a team score of 30. GVSU outdistanced second-place Saginaw Valley State University by 54 points (30-84). The Lakers claimed their 14th straight conference title after  placing three runners in the top five, lead by junior Ally Winchester who finished second overall with a time of 22:09.4. In all, the Lakers placed five competitors in the race on the All-GLIAC First and Second Teams.

Ferris State University senior Samantha Johnson took GLIAC Women's Cross Country "Athlete of the Year" honors after finishing first in the race with a time of 21:57.1.  "Freshman of the Year" accolades went to Ashland University's Delainey Phelps, who placed eighth with a time 22:36.2.  GVSU's Jerry Baltes earned the GLIAC Women's Cross Country "Coach of the Year" honors.


The Grand Valley State Men's Cross Country team claimed its 12th straight GLIAC Championship with a total of 21 points, 71 points ahead of second-place Malone University. Grand Valley State's Brent Showerman was named the GLIAC "Athlete of the Year" after placing first in the event with a time of 25:18.8. Showerman was one of six Lakers to finish in the top nine.

"Freshman of the Year" honors went to Ashland's Charlie Michel, who finished the eight-kilometer course in a time of 25:35.2. GVSU's Jerry Baltes earned the GLIAC Men's Cross Country "Coach of the Year" honors as well.
