2014 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship Men's Results
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Grand Valley State men's (43 points) and women's (42 points) cross country teams were once again victorious at the 2014 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships at the Angel Mounds Course in Evansville, Indiana. It's the 14thstraight regional title for the GVSU women who landed four runners (Jessica Janecke 3rd, Allyson Winchester 4th, Hannah Osborn 6th, Jordan Chester 10th) inside the top 10, while the men make it 13 consecutive championships as Alan Peterson earned a runner-up showing and GVSU managed five runners inside the top 12.
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) captured seven of the eight national qualfying combined in both gender competitions. The top four teams in each race advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships, while the top 3 individuals that are not on an advancing team, qualify for nationals as well. All individuals who finish in the top five at the regional meet and are not part of a qualifying team also advance to nationals.
For the women, Hillsdale finished runner-up (76 points) thanks to a first place finish from Emily Oren with a time of 20:46 to pace the Chargers. Wayne State took third place with a 113 total score led by an 11th place finish from Lauren Gagnon. In the fourth and final qualifying team spot was Malone with 132 points as Hannah Campbell led the way in 12th position.
Saginaw Valley State's Emily Short qualified individually for the NCAA National Championship meet after a seventh place finish. This year's event will be hosted as part of the Fall Festival on December 6th at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
On the men's side, Malone wound up with 91 points to take second place as they were paced by Ryan Roush in seventh place and Andrew Trusty in ninth. The Ashland Eagles claimed the fourth spot with 116 points, eding out Wisconsin-Parkside by one point as AU heads to nationals led by Nick Hall who won the GLIAC title two weeks ago.
Individually for the men, Joshua Mirth from Hillsdale is on to Louisville after a third place finish at 30:33 along with Michigan Tech's Sean Pengelly who was the final qualifier in 13th position with a time of 31:05.
