GVSU claims men's cross country program's first NCAA title

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Grand Valley State claimed the 2018 NCAA Division II men's cross country title Saturday at Schenley Park by landing six runners in the top 60, including two in the top 10.

Senior and three-time All-American Zach Panning led the Lakers with an overall second-place finish in 31:53.6, while sophomore Enael Woldemichael was sixth in 32:26.4. Panning was narrowly out-kicked by CSU-Pueblo's Marcelo Laguera, who won the NCAA individual title in 31:46.4.

GVSU freshman Tanner Chada was 21st in 32:59.9, followed by senior Josh Steible, who was 28th in 33:11.8. Freshman Ben Zaremba placed 45th in 33:38.6, and junior Jacob Domagalski was 59th in 33:56.6. Also for the Lakers, senior Brian Masayesva was 244th.

GVSU edged Colorado Mines by 10 points to claim the men's program's first national team title. The Lakers entered the meet ranked third in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Poll. They were the NCAA runner-up at four of the previous five national championships.

Saginaw Valley, led by senior Tom Goforth (16th) and freshman CarLee Stimpfel (26th), finished sixth in the men's team standings. SVSU's top seven also included freshman Dayton Brown (52nd), junior Nate Frasier ( 70th), junior Austen Mandernach (104th), senior Parker Eisengruber (152nd) and freshman Ryan Talbott (181st).

Individually, Michigan Tech's Braden Reichl placed 24th in 33:04.1 and became the MTU men's program's first all-American. Northwood's Brian Patrick was 36th in 33:22.2 and also established a program first by earning All-America honors for the Timberwolves. Lake Superior State's David Mitter was 121st and Ferris State's Damien Halvorson 185th.
