MIDLAND, Mich.-- Second-seeded Saginaw Valley State University and fourth-seeded Wayne State University will play for the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Softball Championship at the Gerstacker Athletic Complex on the campus of Northwood University.  Sunday's 10:00 a.m. clash will mark the second consecutive season that the Cardinals and Warriors will play for the GLIAC title.

Saginaw Valley State is the only undefeated team left in the tournament after knocking off top-seeded Ashland University in the winners bracket final on Saturday.  The Cardinals posted a 3-1 victory to advance to the championship series.

Wayne State University, having lost its winners bracket semifinal game to Grand Valley State University on Friday (4-1), needed to post three wins on Saturday to reach the championship finals.  WSU started Saturday with a 4-0 win over second-seeded Ferris State University.  The Warriors then avenged Friday's loss to by defeating GVSU, 5-0.  Wayne State completed the trifecta by downing Ashland, 8-2, in Saturday's nightcap.

Coming out of the losers bracket means that WSU must take down the Cardinals twice on Sunday to claim the GLIAC title, while SVSU needs just one win to earn the championship.

The 2008 GLIAC Softball championship series posted a similar scenario.  The Warriors, again coming from the losers bracket, took the first game of the championship series, but SVSU took game two along with the conference title.

The 2009 GLIAC Softball championship is being held at the Gerstacker Athletic Complex on the campus of Northwood University in Midland, Mich.  Live stats will be available for all games at:  http://www.gliac.org/sports/sball/2008-09/tournament/2009_Brak.html
