Northwood's Boscola And Ashland's Hursey Named GLIAC Softball "Player & Pitcher of the Week", Respectively

Bay City, Mich. -- Northwood University junior third baseman Michelle Boscola (Broomfield, Colo./Legacy) and Ashland University sophomore pitcher Logan Hursey (Zanesville, Ohio/John Glenn) have been named GLIAC Softball "Player" and "Pitcher" of the Week, respectively it was announced by the league office.

Junior third basemen Michelle Boscola set the Northwood record for career home runs while batting .545 with three home runs and eight RBI's in three Timberwolves games. She finished the week with a 1.364 slugging percentage and drove in eight of the Timberwolves' 10 runs. Boscola hit one home run in all three games, including a walk-off homer in the seventh to give Northwood a 7-5 victory over Tiffin. For her career, Boscola has now hit 18 home runs, passing the old school record of 16 set by Tara Tigner (1997-2000) and Kyan Flynn (1992-95).

Sophomore pitcher Logan Hursey went 3-0 last week. She had an 0.67 ERA with one walk and 24 strikeouts in 21 innings. Hursey has won seven consecutive decisions. Last week, she defeated Findlay (4-0), Lake Superior State (4-0) and Northwood (3-2). She allowed six hits against Findlay and pitched a three-hitter to beat Lake Superior State. Opposing hitters batted .171 against Hursey last week. Her season record is 14-4 with a 1.67 ERA.

Ashland - The 2009 Eagles are looking to advance to the postseason for the first time since 2003...freshman third baseman Alyssa Kelley hit .600 in six games last week. Over the last two weeks Kelley is hitting .529 (18-of-34)...senior first baseman Shannon Gray has moved into a tie for sixth place on AU's career home run list. Before this season, Gray had two homers. She has belted nine roundtrippers this season. Gray hit .429 last week and had a one-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the Eagles past Northwood, 3-2...sophomore pitcher Logan Hursey has won seven consecutive decisions. The last time she lost was Apr. 1 against Wayne State (3-0). Hursey was 3-0 last week and in 21 innings, struck out 24 and walked one. Before beating Northwood, 3-2 on Sunday, she had thrown three consecutive shutouts. Hursey is 14-4 with a 1.67 ERA...second baseman Carrie Hosier is 8-for-8 in stolen base attempts. The junior is second on the team in runs (27). This is her first season at AU...freshman pitcher Emlyn Knerem has 215 strikeouts. She could move onto the school's top five single-season chart with a strong finish. Natalie Pry has the fifth best mark in school history (250, 1999). 

Ferris State - Ferris State compiled a 16-4 mark in 20 April contests this season and batted for a .311 team average (175-562). The Bulldogs' pitching corps turned in a 1.28 earned run average in 136.2 innings while the opposition registered a 4.39 earned run average in 130.2 innings. Junior pitcher Kayle Stevenson went 6-0 in 10 appearances this month with a team-leading 0.77 earned run average and 32 strikeouts in 54.2 innings of work...Junior designated player Rhea Flores' five RBIs against LSSU last Wednesday (4/22) in game two represented a career game-high, eclipsing her four RBIs set earlier this season (3/9) against Southern Indiana. Flores has presently registered eight career multiple-RBI game performances, which includes a team-high tying five this season...Sophomore outfielder Rachel Wade has produced at least a base hit in 10 of her last 12 outings to date this season and is batting .357 (15-42) during that span. Wade has amassed five multiple-hit game efforts with two hits apiece in those five encounters... FSU's 18 conference victories this season represents a single-season school record, bettering the 16 league wins earned by the 2000 squad (16-4) and the 2008 team (16-4). 

Findlay - The Oilers went 2-4 last week...They defeated Hillsdale twice for their two wins...Kara Hochevar leads the team with a .354 batting average...She also has two homeruns and 34 runs-batted-in...Katie Ammons is hitting .350 with a team-high 41 hits...Brittany Dauterman has smacked six homeruns to go along with 32 RBI's...Amanda Kern has a team-high nine steals...Dauterman leads the pitching staff with a 3.81 earned run average...Lauren Orban has a team-high seven wins...She also has a team-high two saves...Dauterman has registered 62 strikeouts in 82.2 innings. 

Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State had both sets of doubleheaders washed out over the weekend - with home doubleheaders against Wayne State and Saginaw Valley State cancelled due to rain. The Lakers are currently 31-16 overall, with an 11-11 mark in GLIAC play...GVSU honored its four seniors on Sunday before the doubleheader against the Cardinals. Lori Andjelich (Munster, Ind.), Becky Rudenga (South Holland, Ill.), Karen Walters (Channahon, Ill.), and Nichole Woityra (Lake Orion, Mich.) were a part of the Senior Day celebration. That group owns a career record of 129-71, including a pair of trips to the NCAA Regional Tournament. In 2006, as freshmen, they helped lead the Lakers to the GLIAC Tournament Championship. 

Hillsdale- The Hillsdale College softball team finished the 2009 regular season with a 17-27 record...The team will not make the GLIAC Tournament after losing two games to the University of Findlay Sunday...This is the third year in a row the Chargers have missed the tournament...Hillsdale won four more games and lost 10 fewer games than it did in 2008...Sophomore Jordan Kellie led the team with seven home runs, tied for the second-most in a single season in school history...As a team, Hillsdale hit 29 home runs while allowing just 17...The team's five-member freshman class combined to hit 16 of the team's 29 home runs...Junior Devon Trimmer ended the season on a 10-game hitting streak and led the team with a .320 batting average...She has hit over .300 in two of her three seasons with the team...Trimmer and freshman Allison Hetrick were the only players to start all 44 games this season. 

Lake Superior State - Junior second baseman Lorrie Chaperon (Howell, Mich.) batted .438 (7-16), while junior catcher Nichole Dunford (Chesterfield, Mich.) batted .357 (5-14) to lead the Lakers last weekend...Chaperon hit .460 (17-37) during the last two weeks of LSSU's season. She finished as Lake Superior State's top hitter at .319 overall and .359 against GLIAC competition. She also had the Lakers' top slugging percentage of .457...Dunford led the Lakers in RBIs with 25 this season, while Chaperon led in extra-base hits with 15...LSSU freshman pitcher Jillian Willette (Escanaba, Mich.) was 1-2 with a 2.68 earned run average last week...Senior pitcher Nikki Christensen (Marquette, Mich.) led LSSU in strikeouts with 104. 

Northwood - Northwood went 1-2 last week, earning a dramatic 7-5 win over Tiffin before dropping a pair to Ashland...the Timberwolves are now 17-22 overall and finish GLIAC play with an 11-14 record...junior Michelle Boscola (Broomfield, Colo./Legacy) led the way for Northwood with a big week at the plate...she set the NU record for career home runs while batting .545 with three home runs and eight RBI's...Boscola finished the week with a 1.364 slugging percentage and drove in eight of the Timberwolves 10 runs...she hit one home run in all three games, including a walk-off homer in the seventh to give Northwood a 7-5 victory over Tiffin... for her career, Boscola has now hit 18 home runs, passing the old school record of 16 set by Tara Tigner (1997-2000) and Kyan Flynn (1992-95)...NU will be the sixth seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will face Ferris State in the opening round. 

Saginaw Valley State - Saginaw Valley State University saw it hopes of a regular season Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship ruin as the rain washed out all four games. The Cardinals and Lakers tried to play on Sunday but the rain moved in during the 3rd inning and forced a stoppage with SVSU up 9-0 with the bases loaded. Saginaw Valley has now won 26 of their last 30 games and 18-of-22 in the GLIAC. For the season the Cardinals are hitting .314 as a team and have outscored their opponents 229-77, including 71-17 in the first two innings of games. Saginaw Valley State University also improved its record to 29-3 when scoring two or more runs in a game. The Cardinals pitching staff has also been dominating this season holding opponents to a .205 batting average, while striking out 232 batters. The Cardinals boast the GLIAC's third best team ERA of 1.47 and have combined for 14 shutouts on the season. Saginaw Valley will go into the GLIAC Tournament as the second seed overall and will play Tiffin on Friday (May 2) at 10:00 AM at Emerson Park in Midland, Mich. 

Tiffin - TU struggled at the plate, batting just .246 as a team in a 2-5 week...only three players batted over .300 for the week, with Stephanie Bobotas leading the way with a .421 clip batting near the top of the order. She led the team with 8 runs scored...Tiffany Smith continued her recent hot hitting, batting .412 with 2 home runs and 7 RBI. She slugged .882 for the week with a .500 on-base percentage. She posted a multi-hit game against Northern Kentucky with a home run, while also getting multiple hits at Northwood and drilling a grand slam at Lake Superior State...Kelsey Vincent also had a good week, hitting .353 while Jen Kramer hit .286...Delaney Talmage batted just .261 but had clutch hits to drive in 7 runs with 2 home runs and 4 runs scored. 

Wayne State - WSU went 3-1 last week before rain cancelled the final four games of the regular season...the Warriors finished with a 17-5 GLIAC record, the 29th consecutive year WSU has finished at or above .500 in league play (the last 28 years under Gary Bryce)...Bryce has a 349-164-1 all-time GLIAC record for a .680 winning percentage...junior pitcher Casey Hanes has compiled a 24-5 mark during the 2009 campaign, and has recorded a top-five WSU single-season mark in seven different categories: saves (t-1st/4), shutouts (2nd/11), strikeouts (3rd/231), winning percentage (t-3rd/.828), ERA (t-5th/0.68), wins (t-5th/24), and appearances (t-5th/36)...freshman designated player Alison Allen has a .583 slugging percentage (88 total bases in 151 at bats), which ranks 13th, while her nine home runs is sixth best on the single-season charts...senior second baseman Lisa Seymour needs two games played to tie Sue Verbeem (2003-06) for 11th place all-time at 212...she is tied-for-12th in career sacrifices with 38 and is 12th in fielding assists with 279...junior Nicole Abel is 11th in career strikeouts (241), while Hanes is 12th (231)...junior center fielder Sarah Teller and freshman third baseman Rebecca Stanley both batted .417 (5-12) last week...WSU will be looking for its GLIAC record 14th conference title this weekend.
