GVSU’s Martin Tabbed “Freshman of the Year,” AU’s Gulas Earns “Coach of the Year” Honors.

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Sophomore outfielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) and senior pitcher Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) of Wayne State University have been selected as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) softball “Player of the Year” and “Pitcher of the Year,” respectively.  Rookie pitcher/infielder Katie Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) of Grand Valley State University was chosen as “Freshman of the Year,” while Ashland University head coach Sheilah Gulas earned GLIAC “Coach of the Year” honors.  All four awards were selected by the GLIAC softball coaches in conjunction with all-conference balloting.

Allen becomes the fourth Warrior in school history to be named GLIAC “Player of the Year” joining Tish Miller (1986 and 1987), and Molly Yetman (2007).  Allen set a WSU single-season record and led the GLIAC with 119 total bases during the regular season.  She also led the conference in overall hits (81) and hits per game (1.47), while ranking fourth in batting average (.409) and runs scored (38), tied-for-fourth in home runs (8), seventh in slugging percentage (.601), tied-for-eighth in doubles (12) and ninth in on-base percentage (.453).  The 2009 second team all-region selection, leads WSU with 22 multiple-hit contests in 2010 and has at least one hit in 47 of 55 contests.  Allen entered the week 22nd nationally in toughest to strikeout (1 every 28.3 at bats/7 times in 214 plate appearances).  In terms of GLIAC stats, Allen was first in hits (42) and hits per game (1.62), third in both batting (.442) and total bases (58), fifth in on-base percentage (.475), and eighth in slugging percentage (.611).

Hanes has been selected GLIAC “Pitcher of the Year” for the second consecutive season.  She entered the week as the national leader in earned-run average (0.56), while ranking second in victories (37), shutouts (15) and strikeouts (314), fourth in hits allowed per seven innings (3.85), 19th in saves (3), and 37th in strikeouts per seven innings (7.9).  Hanes, the 2009 Daktronics All-America Second Team selection, set WSU single-season marks in 2010 for wins, strikeouts and shutouts.  She compiled an 18-3 GLIAC mark with league-leading marks of 0.60 ERA, 149 strikeouts, 127.1 innings pitched, 24 appearances, 15 starts, seven shutouts, 15 complete games and a .171 opponent batting average.

Martin ranks in the top five in the GLIAC in four hitting categories, as the rookie tallied 14 doubles, nine homers, 40 RBI, and 97 total bases in the regular season. She also ranks seventh in the league in batting average, as Martin has compiled a .392 clip. Her nine roundtrippers are tied for fourth-most in a single season in Laker history, while her 14 doubles are tied for sixth-most in a season at GVSU. In starting all 45 games as a true freshman, Martin leads the Lakers in batting average, runs (30), hits (56), doubles, homers, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage (.678), walks (18), and on-base percentage (.466). She also went 10-5 in the circle this season with a 1.66 earned run average and 96 strikeouts in 97.0 innings.

Gulas, who is in her 14th season at Ashland, is in her and 23rd year as a collegiate head coach. At Ashland, she is 491-231 and has guided the Eagles to seven appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs. Her teams have won 30 or more games eight times. During her tenure, the Eagles have won five GLIAC regular season titles and three GLIAC Tournament titles.  Gulas has an overall career record of 694-355.
