BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State University junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont./Preston) and Grand Valley State University senior pitcher Andrea Nicholson (Avon Lake, Ohio) have been chosen as the GLIAC Softball "Player of the Week" and "Pitcher of the Week", respectively.

Junior Stephanie Foreman had at least one hit in eight of the nine games in Florida including five multiple-hit affairs. Foreman batted .519 (14-27) with five RBI including two doubles. She walked twice for a .533 on-base percentage and contributed two stolen bases. Foreman currently ranks second in the GLIAC with six doubles, and eighth in the conference with a batting average of .447 and slugging percentage of .638.

Senior Andrea Nicholson was 2-1
with a 0.46 ERA for the #15 Lakers last week, as GVSU went 4-2 in
three doubleheaders. Against Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday,
Nicholson tossed a complete-game six-hitter, allowing two runs (one
earned) in a 3-2 Laker victory. She also earned a combined shutout
by giving up just three hits in four innings, while striking out
seven Urbana hitters in a 9-0 win on Sunday.

Ashland Eagles
The Eagles swept a road
doubleheader from Urbana on Thursday afternoon in their only games
of the week. AU’s scheduled Saturday twinbill at Notre Dame
was wiped out due to wet field conditions. On Thursday, the Eagles
won by final scores of 9-0 and 9-1 over the Blue Knights. The
Eagles have now won seven straight games and are 14-4 on the
season. Freshman outfielder Taylor Menhart was 4-for-7 at Urbana
with two triples and four RBI in the doubleheader. She also walked
once, stole a base and scored three runs. Senior Alyssa Kelley was
5-for-7 with a pair of doubles and four runs scored. Senior
right-hander Emlyn Knerem tossed her fourth shutout of the season,
striking out 14 and allowing just two hits. Knerem was the NFCA
National Pitcher of the Week last week. She has 104 strikeouts in
66.2 innings pitched this season and has an unblemished 11-0 record
with a 0.53 ERA. Freshman righty Amber McDermott allowed just one
run in a complete game in Game 2 of the doubleheader. She struck
out nine and allowed just four hits to earn her second career win.
The Eagles host four doubleheaders this week, including six games
against GLIAC schools.
Ferris State Bulldogs
The 2012 Ferris State University
softball team will get their first opportunity to play at home on
Monday (March 19) when the Bulldogs host the Aquinas Saints in a
non-conference doubleheader at the FSU Varsity Softball Field in
Big Rapids, Mich. Opening pitch for game one is at 3:30 p.m. (EDT)
with the second game to follow about 20 minutes following the
conclusion of the opener. Ferris State, which is coached by
first-year interim head coach Dawn Thompson, is scheduled to play a
total of 18 home contests this spring with 16 of those outings
being Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games
over the course of nine doubleheaders. The Bulldogs presently own a
6-8 overall mark this campaign following their annual appearance in
the Florida Rebel Spring Games Tournament (March 3-10) at
Kissimmee, Fla. Following Monday’s home opener, the Bulldogs
are next slated to open GLIAC action on the road this coming
weekend as the Bulldogs visit Findlay on Friday, March 23, for a
twinbill beginning at 3:30 p.m. (ET). FSU then visits Tiffin
on Saturday (March 24) before taking on Wayne State in Detroit on
Sunday (March 25). The Bulldogs were picked to finish third in this
year’s GLIAC North Division Coaches Poll.
Findlay
Oilers
The Oilers split their two series
against Urbana and Cedarville this past week. UF will play Monday
at Concordia (Mich.) before hosting three weekend series against
GLIAC foes.
Grand Valley State Lakers
#15 Grand Valley State went 4-2 in three non-conference
twinbills, pushing its record to 15-3 this season. The Lakers
outhit their opponents (53-33) and tallied a better batting average
(.323 to .224), but GVSU’s strong point last week was its
pitching. Senior Andrea Nicholson (Avon Lake, Ohio) was 2-1 with a
0.46 earned run average, giving up just one earned run in 15.1
innings of work. Junior Hannah Santora (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard
North) was also 2-1 with a 1.07 ERA, striking out 16 batters in
19.2 innings…senior Maggie Kerrigan (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln
Way East) hit a team-high .467, as she went 7-of-15 at the plate.
She also did not commit an error in six games in left
field…sophomore Briauna Taylor (Livonia, Mich./Livonia
Franklin) hit .421 with a homer, three RBI, and four runs scored.
Junior Nellie Kosola (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) also hit
.421 with a triple and three RBI. Kosola leads the GLIAC with a
.492 batting average, while Taylor is third with a .482 mark. The
Lakers have the top three players in the conference in terms of
hits, as Kosola (30), Taylor (27), and junior Katie Martin (23)
rank 1-2-3 in the league in that category.
Hillsdale Chargers
The Hillsdale College softball team
put together its longest winning streak since March 26-27, 2011,
with its four straight wins in Florida last week…Senior
Jessica Guertin hit two more home runs last week, increasing her
school-record career total to 36, which doubles the old record of
18…Junior Kate Hoop is leading the team with a .478 batting
average and has gotten on base in eight of the team’s nine
games…She already has four multi-hit games in 2012 compared
to seven in all of 2011…Freshman Katie Ardrey earned her
first two collegiate wins on the mound during the team’s
current winning streak…The team already has 29 stolen bases
this season compared to 23 all of last season…Hoop had four
steals against Merrimack and leads the team with six on the
season.
Lake Erie Storm
Lake Erie College competed at the
Rebel Spring Games last week, going 1-8 to start its season.
The Storm won their final game, 4-2, over St. Francis (Ind.).
Sophomore Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside) worked a
complete game in that contest for the win. She has a 3.82 ERA
in six appearances with four starts so far this season.
Redshirt freshman shortstop Maddi Klemp (Akron, Ohio/Coventry)
leads the team with a .344 batting average while senior first
baseman Lindsey Pennell (Columbus, Ohio/Westland) is also over .300
batting .316.
Lake Superior State Lakers
Lake Superior
State was idle this past week, and will begin GLIAC this coming
weekend. LSSU will play weekends series at Ohio Dominican Friday,
at Lake Erie Saturday, and at Ashland Sunday.
Northwood Timberwolves
The Northwood softball team opened its 2012 season by going 3-9 at the Rebel Spring Games … Northwood was led offensively by Stacey Klonowski (Canton, Mich./Plymouth), who hit .351 and had all four of the Timberwolves home runs … she finished the week with 29 total bases, 12 more than any other player on the team … freshman Maddison Sebald (Bay City, Mich./Western) had two of Northwood’s three wins for the week … Northwood will travel to Ashland, Ohio Dominican and Lake Erie this week.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
Despite the warmer temperatures of
the Texas sun, ODU’s bats were cold as the Panthers dropped
seven of eight contests on the Spring Break trip. ODU struggled to
gain any footing at the plate, recording only 12 runs, while
hitting .168 (31-of-185) as St. Edward’s (2-1, 2-0), Texas
A&M Kingsville (9-1, 6-1) and Incarnate Word (8-2, 4-3) all
collected the home doubleheader sweeps. The Panthers snapped their
seven-game skid on Thursday’s finale at NAIA power
Houston-Victoria with a 1-0 decision in game one of the twinbill.
Senior Kylee Crislip (Louisville, OH) recorded nine of ODU’s
31 hits for the week, going 9-of-21 (.429) with five RBI, two walks
and a pair of multi-hit efforts. She also smacked her first homerun
of the year, a one-out, solo shot to left in the fourth inning of
Monday’s opener at St. Edward’s. With three hits by
pitch in Wednesday’s game one at Incarnate Word, freshman
Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, OH), one of the Division II leaders in the
category, tied the ODU single-game record for the second time
already this season and is now just two away from matching the
single-season mark of nine realized by Kelly Simms in 2002. With
the Spring Break trip over, ODU returns home for an eight-game,
five-day homestand, beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21 as
Notre Dame (Ohio) visits Panther Field for the home opener.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University
softball did not play this past week. The Cardinals start GLIAC
play this coming weekend with a road trip to Ohio to take on Lake
Erie, Ashland, and Ohio Dominican Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
respectively.
Tiffin Dragons
Tiffin University looks ahead to GLIAC play this weekend. Seven players are currently batting over .300, with Amanda Temple leading the pack with a .412 average. Meagan Baird is at .370 while Payton Denman is at .353. Emily Shaw (.333), Torrie Terry (.323), Caitlin Houk (.313), and Lauren Mazzuca (.302) also are hitting well early in the season.

Wayne State
begins league competition with an 8-10 overall record after
compiling a 4-5 mark at the Rebel Spring Games … junior
outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) hit a
team-best .519 (14-27) in Florida with five RBI and two stolen
bases … she has a six-game hitting streak entering
“northern” play … sophomore outfielder Logan
White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) scored four times in the
win over Minnesota State-Moorhead, the most by a WSU player since
Sue Verbeem crossed the plate four times on March 12, 2005, against
C. W. Post … freshman outfielder Shannon Hilton (Gilford,
Ont. / Bradford) had a WSU season-best four RBI in the March 17th
victory over Slippery Rock … senior first baseman Rebecca
Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) has moved into
second place on the GLIAC all-time list for career putouts with
1,399 … she trails Grand Valley’s Kimberly Biskup who
totaled 1,666 putouts from 1997-2000 … freshman pitcher
Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) recorded 20 strikeouts in 25.2
innings during the spring break trip … the Warriors are
scheduled to play their first 10 league games at home.
