BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State University senior third baseman Alison Allen (Redford, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) and Grand Valley State University pitcher Hannah Santora (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) have been chosen as the GLIAC Softball "Player of the Week" and "Pitcher of the Week", respectively.

WSU senior 3B Alison Allen had a
hit in all six games last week to extend her hitting streak to nine
games, helping the Warriors to a 3-3 mark. She batted .545 (12-22)
for the week, scoring 10 runs and driving in eight. She recorded
three doubles, a triple and a home run for a .909 slugging
percentage. Allen had five multiple-hit games including one
three-hit affair. She drove in the game-winning run in the
win over Findlay with a tie-breaking triple, and scored three times
in the nightcap.

Junior Hannah Santora went 3-0 for
the #14 Lakers, tossing a pair of complete game shutouts and giving
up just one earned run in 19.0 innings of work. In three starts,
she allowed only 10 hits (zero extra-base hits) and opponents hit
just .161 off of her. Santora tossed a five-hitter in a 3-2
win over Hillsdale, giving up her only earned run of the week. She
followed with back-to-back shutouts (a two-hitter and a
three-hitter) against SVSU on Saturday and Sunday, improving to
15-2 on the season.

Ashland Eagles
The Eagles embark on what looks to
be one of their most difficult stretches of the season this week.
AU plays its next eight games on the road. This stretch
includes doubleheaders at Wayne State, Hillsdale, Grand Valley
State and Ferris State…senior shortstop Bri Woody
(Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) enjoyed one of her best weeks of the
season last week, hitting a team-high .474…both AU catchers,
junior Tawna Garver (Mansfield, Ohio/Hillsdale) and freshman
Jerrica Young (Loudonville, Ohio), have five homers. They share the
team lead in home runs…AU has four players hitting .340 or
higher, led by senior third baseman Alyssa Kelley (Mentor, Ohio),
who is hitting a team-high .441…senior pitcher Emlyn Knerem
(Brunswick, Ohio) suffered her first loss of the season last week.
Lake Erie downed Knerem and the Eagles, 4-2. Knerem is 20-1.
This is the third consecutive year she’s won 20 or more
games.
Ferris State Bulldogs
FSUwon four of a possible six games
in league play at home last week. The Bulldogs earned a split
with Northwood on Wednesday (April 4) before taking three of a
possible four contests versus Hillsdale on Saturday and Sunday
(April 5-6) at the FSU Softball Field... Senior first baseman
Chelsea Morris hit .647 in 17 trips to the plate for FSU. The
reigning GLIAC “Player of the Year” tallied 11 hits and
a .765 slugging percentage with two doubles and three RBI’s.
She also drew a walk and struck out only twice with two sacrifice
hits... Junior pitcher Dana Bowler had an outstanding week for the
Bulldogs in the pitching circle. She recorded a 2-1 record
and a 1.42 earned run average in 19 innings pitched. Bowler
allowed only two earned runs for the week and none over 12 innings
in her final two appearances. She also struck out 23 batters
and walked only one. Bowler tossed a complete game no-hitter
with nine strikeouts in a 4-0 league home win over Hillsdale in her
final appearance of the week on Saturday. The junior also
struck out seven and gave up only one hit in a 9-1 victory on
Friday over the Chargers in five innings of work.
Findlay
Oilers
The University of Findlay softball
team had a fantastic week as the Oilers finished 5-1 playing six
conference games this past week. The Oilers are now 18-13 overall
with a 9-7 mark in the GLIAC. After a tough loss in game one (5-1),
Tori Allen’s three hits and three RBI led Findlay to an 8-7
victory over Wayne State. Grace Ammons pocketed a save in the
contest. The Oilers dominated the four-game series against Lake
Erie College and outscored the Storm 38-7 in the conference series.
Brittany Dauterman picked up her first shutout of the 2012 campaign
in game one on Friday in just six innings on the mound. The UF
softball team is looking forward to hosting Tiffin University for a
doubleheader on Tuesday, April 10, before traveling north for three
separate doubleheaders this weekend (April 13-15). Findlay will
face Northwood on Friday (3:30 pm), Lake Superior State Saturday (1
pm), and Saginaw Valley on Sunday (noon).
Grand Valley State Lakers
#14 Grand Valley State split three
home doubleheaders last week, moving its record to 30-8 on the
year. It is the 17th time GVSU has reached the 30-win plateau in
school history and the 16th time under head coach Doug Woods. The
22-year veteran coach, Woods currently has 798 wins and will become
the 16th head coach in Division II history to reach the 800-win
mark…junior pitcher Hannah Santora (Carol Stream,
Ill./Glenbard North) went 3-0 last week with a 0.37 ERA, winning
all three of GVSU’s games and holding opponents to a .161
batting average. She tossed consecutive complete game shutouts (a
two-hitter and a three-hitter) against SVSU on Saturday and Sunday
…sophomore shortstop Briauna Taylor (Livonia, Mich./Livonia
Franklin) hit a home run in each game of the Sunday doubleheader
against the Cardinals, giving her a team-high eight homers this
season. That is tied for eighth-most in a single-season in GVSU
history. Her 14 career homers (in just two seasons) ties her for
10th all-time in Laker history.
Hillsdale Chargers
The Hillsdale College softball team traveled to west Michigan twice this week for six straight games on the road, and came away with a 2-4 record…During the weekend, the Chargers matched the most wins they’ve had in a season since 2007 with their 17th victory, coming Saturday at Ferris State…The team hasn’t won more than 18 games in a season since 2006…Senior pitcher Laura Homan recorded a complete-game shutout over the Lakers Tuesday, and had a scoreless innings pitched streak of 29.2 innings pitched, dating back a total of seven appearances …She also recorded four straight shutouts, a streak ended by the Bulldogs Friday…Junior shortstop Kate Hoop increased her batting average by 43 points in six games last week, going 11-for-19 in the past six games, with four multi-hit games coming in that stretch..Her batting average went from .295 to .338 during her current hot streak…Senior Allison Hetrick got her 30th hit of the season Friday against Ferris State, the first time in her career she has reached that plateau…Homan needs one more pitching win to become the first Charger with 11 in a season since Aimee Genter won 13 back in 2006.
Lake Erie Storm
Lake Erie College ran into trouble
this week, dropping all eight games played. The highlights of
the week Wednesday, where Lake Erie put a scare into conference
leading Ashland University, falling 4-2 and 7-5 with a strong
opportunity to win in each game. In game one, the Storm got a
pair of runs off Ashland ace Emlyn Knerem and had the tying
run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh. In the nightcap,
sophomore Juliana Brotzman’s (Madison, Ohio/Madison) gave
Lake Erie the lead in the top of the seventh with her fourth hi of
the game and senior Ali Heming’s (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin)
single extend the lead to 5-3 before the Storm surrendered four
unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh. On the week, the
1-2 punch of Brotzman and senior Megan Foley (Brunswick,
Ohio/Brunswick) carried the Storm. Brotzman went 11-of-23
with two doubles and three RBI while Foley was seven-of-14 with two
home runs and five runs scored. Lake Erie plays four GLIAC
road doubleheaders this upcoming week.
Lake Superior State Lakers
LSSU finished 0-6 during last week’s games, which included a four-game set at Northwood. Freshman shortstop/catcher Amanda Maxon (Munising, Mich.) batted .471 with eight hits to lead the Lakers. She hit her fourth home run of the season during a 3-2 loss to NU on April 7. Maxon is batting .319 for the season. Freshman catcher/first baseman Ali Lince (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) batted .368 and hit her second home run of the year during a 9-2 loss at Saginaw Valley State. Freshman relief pitcher Brandi Anderson (Negaunee, Mich.) posted a 1.70 earned run average during 12.1 innings of work. She has a season ERA of 2.36. Senior hurler Jillian Willette (Escanaba, Mich.) leads LSSU starters with a 3.63 ERA. Lake Superior State plays its home opener at 3 p.m. Tuesday against Ferris State.
Northwood Timberwolves
Northwood had a strong week, going
5-1 overall … the Timberwolves split at Ferris State
Wednesday before sweeping four games from Lake Superior State
… NU, which has gone 7-2 in its last nine games, stands at
12-18 overall, 9-9 in the GLIAC … the highlight play of the
week came from senior Andrea Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron)
… she had a fifth inning grand slam at Ferris State
Wednesday that broke open a scoreless tie … Martin finished
the week with a .450 batting average and a .750 slugging percentage
… sophomore pitcher Catie Kaliszuk (Tecumseh, Mich.) went
3-0 on the week with a 1.72 ERA … Northwood will host four
doubleheaders this week, taking on Grand Vallye State, Findlay,
Wayne State and Tiffin.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
The Panthers went 3-3 last week
against the top two preseason teams in the South Division, earning
a home split versus Tiffin on Wednesday and a four-game series
split at Ashland on Thursday and Saturday. ODU took the opener
against the Dragons 5-2, but faltered late in game two as Tiffin
rallied for the 3-2 walk-off win. On Thursday, the Panthers handed
the division-leading Eagles its first twinbill sweep of the year,
4-2 and 4-3, yet were silenced on Saturday, falling 5-2 and 4-1.
Freshmen Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, OH) and Danyelle Delligatta
(Sidney, OH) each collected seven hits on the week, including their
first collegiate roundtrippers, to lead the ODU offense. Cribari
finished 7-of-17 (.412) with four RBI and a .706 slugging
percentage, while Delligatta was 7-of-18 (.389) with three RBI and
four runs scored. Freshman Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, TX) went 2-0
with a save and 1.83 ERA in 23.0 innings of work last week.
Stanzel, one of the GLIAC leaders in starts and complete games,
went the distance in both wins, allowing two earned runs on six
hits in the game one win over Tiffin and just two earned runs in
the 4-3, eight-inning decision at Ashland. Classmate Kacey Locker
(Tipp City, OH) picked up career win number one in her first
collegiate start in Thursday’s opener, holding Ashland
to just one earned run on five hits and three walks in five innings
of work.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University
softball team picked up their first sweep in GLIAC play when they
defeated Lake Superior twice on Wednesday (Apr. 4). The Cardinals
faced off against #14 Grand Valley in a four game series splitting
both Friday and Saturday. Saginaw Valley defeated GVSU 2-1 and 5-3
and fell 11-0 and 5-0. Natalie Wellman finished the week with
eight hits for the Cardinals, scored twice and knocked in one run,
while junior pitcher Alexa Gehrls (Caledonia, Mich.) picked up
three wins on the week. The Cardinals are posting a .253 team
batting average, with a .312 on-base percentage and a .330 slugging
percentage. Saginaw Valley pitchers and defense are holding
opponents to just a .234 batting average. The Cardinals will
be back in action on Tuesday (Apr. 10) when the return for an
eight game home stand. The Cardinals play Hillsdale Tuesday (Apr.
10) at 3:00 PM. SVSU will take on Wayne State on Friday (Apr. 13)
at 3:00 PM, Tiffin on Saturday (Apr. 14) at 1:00 PM and Findlay on
Sunday (Apr. 15) at noon.
Tiffin Dragons
The Dragons went 4-2 for the week, evening their record at 6-6 in the GLIAC and improving overall to 15-14...Amanda Temple batted .474 during the Dragons’ 4-2 week, collecting a team-high 9 hits with a .632 slugging percentage. She also scored 4 runs with 12 total bases and only 2 strikeouts while compiling a .429 on-base percentage...Abbey Cooksey picked up a pair of wins with just one loss, fanning 20 in 23 innings with just 5 walks. She also picked up a save in Tiffin’s 7-1 victory over Lake Erie. Opponents batted just .177 against her for the week...The Dragons batted .301 for the week, with Torrie Terry also batting .471. Katie Toomey hit .400 in limited action, while Caitlin Houk (.350, team high 7 RBIs for the week) and Stephanie Bobotas (.348, 6 runs scored) also hit over .300...Amber Young went 2-1 on the mound, fanning 22 in 20 innings over 3 starts with opponents hitting just .182 against her.
Wayne State Warriors
Wayne State split all three conference road doubleheaders last weekend and has four twinbill splits, two doubleheader sweeps and twice was swept in a day. Senior third baseman Alison Allen (Redford, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) batted .545 (12-22) last week with 10 runs scored, eight RBI, three walks and a .600 on-base percentage to go along with a .909 slugging percentage. She also extended her hitting streak to nine games. Senior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child) had a two-run walk-off home run in the fourth game of the series at Tiffin. Senior pitcher Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) went 3-1 last week. After having her five-game winning streak snapped in Saturday’s first game, she earned the win in relief in game two. Sophomore left fielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont./Johnson C.V.I.) leads WSU with 14 multiple-hit games, while both Ryan and junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont./Preston) are tied for the team lead with eight multiple-RBI contests.
