BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State University junior outfielder Stephanie Foremane (Cambridge, Ont./Preston) and senior pitcher Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) have been chosen as the GLIAC Softball  "Player of the Week" and  "Pitcher of the Week", respectively.

Junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman helped the Warriors to a 6-0 week by compiling a .684 batting average with three doubles and homerun.  She tallied a .739 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage while tallying nine runs scored, 10 runs-batted-in, three walks. Foreman also stole a base and was hit by a pitch. She raised her season batting average to .393, eighth best in the GLIAC, while her 46 RBIs rank seventh in the Conference.

Senior pitcher Sam Cain went 3-0 last week tossing a shutout in all three starts and earning a save in her one relief appearance.  She struck out 13 and walked six while allowing just 13 hits and one unearned run in 22 innings of work. Cain had a five-hit shutout with three walks and three strikeouts against Findlay in game one.  She entered game two with the bases loaded and no outs, and retired the next three batters, allowing just one inherited runner to score. Cain is now 18-9 on the year.

Ashland Eagles

 A year ago, AU went 0-6 against Tiffin. With last Friday’s sweep of the Dragons, the Eagles completed the regular season with a 4-0 record against Tiffin…when the Eagles defeated Lake Erie, 17-0 last week, it marked the most runs the Eagles had scored since they defeated Saint Joseph’s 17-2 during the 1998 season. The 28 runs the Eagles scored in the doubleheader with the Storm marks Ashland’s highest output in a twinbill since they scored 29 runs against Clarion in 1999…AU begins this week with a six-game winning streak. AU pitchers have throw shutouts in three of the last four games.  In four games last week Ashland hit .398 with six homers…Ashland has won 30 or more games for the fourth straight year and has won 20 or more conference games for the fourth consecutive season…Ashland was ranked third in the region as of last week…the Eagles end the regular season with a doubleheader at Wayne State on Tuesday (Apr. 24). Earlier this year at WSU the Warriors swept the Eagles. In the first game of that doubleheader, the Warriors won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning…junior first baseman Franki Gironda (Akron, Ohio/Hoban) hit .500 last week with a pair of homers and six RBI.  Gironda had a 1.100 slugging percentage. She leads the Eagles with 38 RBI…senior pitcher Emlyn Knerem (Brunswick, Ohio) went 3-0 last week and is 26-2 for the year. That 26 wins equals Knerem’s season career high. She also won 26 games last season.



 

Ferris State Bulldogs

FSU clinched a GLIAC Tournament berth by recording a 5-1 mark in action last week.  The Bulldogs swept Northwood on the road in GLIAC action on Wednesday (April 18) before recording a 3-1 mark at home against Saginaw Valley State in weekend action on Saturday and Sunday (April 21-22)... The Bulldogs’ lone loss of the week was a 13-12 setback in the final game of a four-game weekend series in Big Rapids against SVSU.  The Cardinals scored in the bottom of the 10th inning to pull out the win... FSU honored three seniors this past weekend during their final home series in third baseman Makenzi Peterson, first baseman Chelsea Morris and outfielder Stephanie Dusendang... Senior third baseman Makenzi Peterson led the Bulldogs to a 5-1 mark this past week as she posted a team-leading .500 batting average in the six games.  Peterson recorded a squad-high 12 hits and posted a team—best nine runs.  She had five doubles and three RBI’s while also drawing two walks... Her play helped FSU clinch at GLIAC Tournament berth.  She posted a .708 slugging percentage and a .538 on-base percentage for the week in addition to totaling 13 assists in the field and notching three stolen bases... Junior pitcher Dana Bowler helped the Bulldogs to a 5-1 mark last week as the team clinched a GLIAC Tournament berth.  Bowler pitched in four contests and recorded a 3-0 mark for the week.  She netted 31 strikeouts and walked only eight batters in 25 innings pitched.

 

Findlay Oilers

The University of Findlay dropped all six games this week, including a doubleheader against Wayne State and a four-game series at Ohio Dominican. Junior Jenna Motuza led the way for the Oilers with seven hits with a .389 batting average on the week. Tori Allen currently leads the conference this season in doubles (17), while Motuza ties for first with five triples. Findlay will return to action on Tuesday, April 24, for the final home game of the 2012 campaign against Tiffin University. The Oilers will host the GLIAC Softball Tournament this weekend, starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 27.



 

Grand Valley State Lakers

#20 GVSU went 5-1 last week and clinched at least a share of the GLIAC regular season title. The Lakers’ 24 conference victories are the most in school history, surpassing last season’s total of 23 league wins. The 41 overall victories are tied for the seventh-most in program history…junior Katie Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) recorded a hit in all six games, pushing her current hitting streak to 17 straight games and 30 of the last 31 contests. She hit .500 with two doubles, a triple, and two home runs, while also going 2-0 with a 0.72 ERA in three appearances in the circle. Martin ranks in the GVSU single season top-10 in six categories this season…junior Nellie Kosola (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) is fifth all-time on the single season list with 76 hits and ninth with 49 runs. Sophomore Briauna Taylor (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Franklin) ranks first in school history this season in hit by pitches (seven) and is fifth in home runs (11). The Lakers’ 48 homers lead the league and are the second-most in Laker history, trailing only last year’s conference record of 76 home runs…junior pitcher Hannah Santora (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) has 21 victories, second-most in the GLIAC, and is one why shy of entering the single season top-10 in GVSU history.




Hillsdale Chargers

The Hillsdale College softball team clinched a winning record in GLIAC play for the first time in 10 years, thanks to a 3-3 record last week…The Chargers are 17-13 in the conference, with two games at Saginaw Valley State remaining…The team’s 25 wins also tie the 2006 team for its most in a season since 2002…The most wins Hillsdale’s softball program has attained since becoming a Division II institution is 27…Junior Taylor Schulty had a huge week for the Chargers, getting four home runs with nine runs batted in…She had no home runs on the season before this week’s games…Senior Jessica Guertin had two home runs on the week, giving her 43 for her career…Her 6 RBI this week give her a school record 147 for her career…Senior Allison Hetrick has 42 hits this season compared to a total of 60 in the first three seasons of her career…Senior pitcher Laura Homan’s 15 wins tie her with Joelle Frantz for the most by a Charger pitcher since 1998…Freshman Jenny Bals recorded her first career pitching win Sunday over Northwood, coming in her first home start.

 

Lake Erie Storm

Lake Erie College suffered a tough week, dropping all six games played.  The Storm hosted senior day Saturday and while they dropped both games, senior outfielder Haley Rathge (Edon, Ohio/Napoleon) hit her second career home run, a three-run blast.  Lake Erie recognized five seniors, Rathge, Megan Foley (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick), Ali Heming (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), Sam Ronde (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) and Lindsey Pennell (Columbus, Ohio/Westland).  Lake Erie wraps up its season this week with a doubleheader at Ohio Dominican Tuesday.




 

Lake Superior State Lakers

Lake Superior State finished 1-5 during last week’s games, ending its three-series string of splits with last Saturday’s 6-1 and 7-6 losses to Grand Valley State. Sophomore second baseman Haleigh Edgar (Tecumseh, Mich.) led LSSU in hits with seven and had seven RBI. Freshman shortstop/catcher Amanda Maxon (Munising, Mich.) homered twice and totaled a team-leading 11 RBI. Maxon is batting .353 with seven home runs and 32 RBI for the season. She is tied for fifth in the GLIAC in average RBI per game at 0.87. Edgar is batting .305. They have a combined 80 hits. Freshman relief pitcher Bandi Anderson (Negaunee, Mich.) has a 2.61 earned run average and has made 20 appearances for 45.2 innings.

 

 

Northwood Timberwolves

Northwood went 2-4 last week, dropping a pair at home to Ferris State before splitting a four game set with Hillsdale … the Timberwolves finished the regular season 18-26 overall, 15-17 in the GLIAC … Northwood will await to see if they make the GLIAC Tournament Tuesday based on the results of Tuesday’s doubleheader between Findlay and Tiffin … if Findlay doesn’t sweep, Northwood makes the field … if Findlay does win both against the Dragons, Northwood and Findlay will be tied … Stacey Klonowski (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) hit .450 in six games last week, leading Northwood with eight RBI’s for the week … she finished with nine hits, which included a double and a home run … Klonowski had at least one hit in all six games and one RBI in four of the six contests … for the season, Klonowski is leading Northwood in batting (.380), hits (54), home runs (eight), RBI’s (26) and slugging (.620).




 

Ohio Dominican Panthers

Following a pair of one-run setbacks, 1-0 (8) and 3-2, on the road to Tiffin, the Panthers rebounded at home with a four-game series sweep of Findlay on Friday (2-0/3-0) and Saturday (5-4/9-4). The Senior Day sweep on Saturday clinched ODU’s first GLIAC Tournament berth in just its second season as the Panthers improved to 18-12 and are currently third in the South Division and fourth in the overall classification with two games to play. The postseason bid is the 20th in program history and first since 2010 when ODU participated in the AII Tournament in Victoria, Texas. After a leadoff walk in Friday’s opener, freshman Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, TX) threw a one-hit shutout, retiring 22 of the next 23 Oilers, including the final 14 of the contest for her fourth shutout of the season. Freshmen Kendall Lust (Marion, OH) and Kacey Locker (Tipp City, OH) combined for a two-hitter in the nightcap Friday. With the bases loaded and score tied at 4-4 in game one Saturday, freshman Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, OH) keyed the 5-4 walk-off with an opposite-field shot between the first baseman and the bag. Senior Kylee Crislip’s (Louisville, OH) 11th homerun of the year in the third moved her into a tie for third most in ODU single-season history. The Panthers’ 25 homeruns as a unit ranks third for a single-season in program history. ODU concludes the regular season Tuesday, April 24 at 3:30 pm as Lake Erie visits Panther Field.



 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals

The Saginaw Valley State University softball team went 2-4 last week, defeating Lake Superior once and Ferris State once.  Sophomore infielder Lindsay Hayward led the week for SVSU with seven runs batted in, four of those runs came in on a grand slam against Ferris State. Junior pitcher Alexa Gehrls picked up two wins for the Cardinals, seeing time in the circle in five of the Cardinals six games last week.  Saginaw Valley is keeping a .258 batting average overall on the season and a .318 on-base percentage. The Cardinals will be back in action on Tuesday (Apr. 24) when they return home for their final regular season game against Hillsdale. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 PM.


 

Tiffin Dragons

Meagan Baird hit .400 to lead the Dragons, collecting 2 doubles and 2 home runs for 3 RBI in 10 at-bats for the week while slugging 1.200 and posting a .600 OBP. She also had 4 walks...Amanda Temple also had a strong week, hitting .385, while Emily Shaw and Jessie Creakbaum also hit .333 for the week...Amber Young and Abbey Cooksey both went 1-1 for the week, with Young posting a 1.91 ERA and fanning 17 in 14.2 innings...Baird continues to blister the ball, hitting .456 for the season while Temple is also over .400 with a .402 mark.



 

 

 

Wayne State Warriors

Wayne State enters the final week of the regular season with a six-game winning streak, and having won 14 of its last 15 games.  WSU has scored at least seven runs in a game 21 times this season, the most in at least 12 years (previous high was 18 in 2010), with 10 games of at least 10 runs (previous high was eight last year)...  Junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) batted .684 last week (13-19) with four extra-base hits, 10 RBI, a 1.000 slugging percentage along with a .739 on-base percentage.  Sophomore second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) hit .480 (12-25) but scored 11 runs, had six extra-base hits including four home runs and drove in 13 runs.  Senior pitcher Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) went 3-0 last week tossing a shutout in all three starts and earning a save in her one relief appearance.  She struck out 13 and walked six while allowing just 13 hits (none for extra bases) and one unearned run in 22 innings.
