SANDUSKY, Ohio -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its 2019 All-GLIAC Softball Teams and postseason awards in conjunction with the conference's annual softball tournament at Sports Force Parks in Sandusky, Ohio. The awards were voted on by the conference softball coaches.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Hannah McClounie - Wayne State
Wayne State senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) was voted GLIAC Player of the Year, becoming the sixth individual WSU softball player to earn this honor joining Tish Miller (1986, 1987), Molly Yetman (2007), Alison Allen (2010), Nikki Fulton (2012) and Lyndsay Butler (2016, 2017). For GLIAC games only, McClounie led the league in home runs (11), total bases (83) and slugging percentage (.838), while finishing second in both hits (43) and batting average (.434), fourth in on-base percentage (.496) and fifth in runs (29). She had more home runs (11) than strikeouts (8), while also contributing 12 walks. A versatile player, McClounie started the first 11 games at third base before an injury necessitated moving to shortstop, where she started the final 21 GLIAC contests. She had a team-best 13 multiple-hit games and tied for the team lead with seven multiple-RBI contests. McClounie, who batted second in all 32 league games, had a 13-game hitting streak (17-game on-base streak) and concluded the regular-season with a nine-game hitting streak. During the 2019 regular-season, McClounie contributed 21 multiple-hit games, while starting all 53 games. She batted .429, set the single-season home run record (14) and became just the third player in program history to have at least 20 walks (26) and 20 extra-base hits (27) in one season. McClounie led the squad in fielding assists (76) and had more than twice as many walks (26) as strikeouts (11) in 196 plate appearances.
PITCHER OF THE YEAR: Allison Lipovsky, Grand Valley State
Grand Valley State senior Allison Lipovsky (Harrison, Mich.) has been named the GLIAC Pitcher of the Year for the third straight season, becoming the first student-athlete to do so since the awards inception in 2008. This season, she’s racked up a 23-2 overall record, including a 14-2 mark against conference competition, as she leads the league with a 0.78 ERA, 249 strikeouts, 10.25 strikeouts per game and 15 shutouts. Her 15 blank sheets spun this season are also tops in the nation while her ERA is third, her 3.71 hits allowed per seven innings is fifth, and her 8.30 strikeout-to-walk ratio is seventh. She’s issued just 30 free passes this season while opposing lineups are hitting a mere .150 off of the central Michigan native. The righty is also once again a top-25 finalist for the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year award.
FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Lydia Goble - Grand Valley State
Grand Valley State’s Lydia Goble (Schoolcraft, Mich.) becomes the sixth player in program history to be named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year and the first since 2016. She has been a run producing machine for the GLIAC regular season champion Lakers as she leads the league with 53 RBIs, ranks second with 52 total runs scored and third with 13 home runs. Her 53 RBIs are the most by a Laker freshman in program history while her 13 homers are the second most in an inaugural season. On the year, she’s hitting .360 with 59 total hits, including 11 doubles, to go with a .677 slugging percentage while getting on base at a .411 clip. She’s also second on the squad with 10 stolen bases and has struck out just four times in her 164 at-bats, which is the 17th best ratio in the nation.
COACH OF THE YEAR: Dana Callihan, Grand Valley State
GVSU head coach Dana Callihan has been named the GLIAC Coach of the Year for the third time in her five years at the helm of the Laker program, joining former head coach and Laker legend Doug “Doc” Woods as the only coaches in conference history to earn the award in three consecutive seasons. Callihan has guided the Lakers to their third straight 1No. seed in the GLIAC Tournament as they wrapped up the regular season with a 40-8 overall record and a 24-6 record in league play. This is the ninth straight season the Lakers have won at least 30 games and the third time under Callihan they have won 40 or more games.
